It's been a while since I visited these two ancient cities on the Peloponnese in Greece - not for the first time, by the way.
Unfortunately the site was closed and we were only able to take a look at the excavations from afar.
However, I was able to admire the olive trees, which are over 1000 years old as well as a few carelessly strewn remains of columns,
Nothing else remains of this once proud kingdom. Is this where the legendary Leonidas was king, who fought so bravely with his warriors at Thermopylae? Apart from a monument at each of the two sites, there is nothing left to remember him.... But he has remained unforgotten in many hearts and in history.
In the ruins of the Byzanthine MISTRAS, you can get an idea of how things once looked here.
Mistras, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded in the 13th century and lies in the foothills of the mighty, magical Taýgetos Mountains, whose highest peak is over 2,400 metres high. It is a marvellous landscape with a powerful aura, omnipresent in the magnificent views from the ruins.
There are still 2 churches from the 14th century with beautiful, partly well-preserved frescoes and 1 inhabited nunnery from the 15th century. You can also visit a fortress located above the town.
There would be a lot to say about the varied history of Mistras, but unfortunately there is not enough space here.
However, my dear guests, I hope you enjoy my pictures anyway and thank you for your time and attention.
