Erroll Garner wrote Misty in 1954 as an instrumental while looking out the window on a flight seeing the beautiful clouds and thinking of his wife. He did not read or write music so he committed the melody to memory until he could get home and record it for transcription . He later conspired with Johnny Burke to write the lyrics. It became Johnny Mathis' signature song after he included it on his album Heavenly in 1959. In 1975, Ray Stevens recorded a country version of it. Here's my take on that.
