@SamBrockmann

@@zoliking , I don't think it was. I've heard him sing low like that before. Also, pitching something down too much typically causes noticeable unauthenticity. I myself can sing like that. Assuming one can sing that low, then all one needs to do is to avoid using normal "brightening of tambre" techniques (e.g.: many singers shape their mouth into a wide smile). You need to then sing completely from the chest. The trick is then to avoid mixing the guitar and bass guitar in such a way that the vocals occupy the same sonic space.

@@zoliking Colm has that crazy low voice. Though he often "helps" it by shoving his tongue in the back of his mouth which does make him sound deeper and helps with vocal fold closure but at the same time, his pronunciation sounds... overly chewy? When I compare Colm's low notes with other basses like Eric Hollaway, who sounds much stronger and grittier because he's a true basso profundo, or Geoff Castellucci, a bass-barytone with insane range and subharmonics, they all sound much cleaner and their pronunciation is more precise. It's a preference thing, though, and Colm still sounds amazing.

Lyrics: Far over the Misty Mountains cold To dungeons deep and caverns old We must away, ere break of day To find our long-forgotten gold. The pines were roaring on the height, The winds were moaning in the night, The fire was red, it flaming spread, The trees like torches blazed with light. Farewell we call to hearth and hall. Though wind may blow and rain may fall, We must away, ere break of day Far o'er the wood and mountain tall. For ancient king and elvish lord There many a gleaming golden hoard They shaped and wrought, and light they caught To hide in gems on hilt of sword. Far over the Misty Mountains grim To dungeons deep and caverns dim We must away, ere break of day To win our harps and gold from him. Far over the Misty Mountains cold To dungeons deep and caverns old We must away, ere break of day To find our long-forgotten gold. We must away, ere break of day To find our long-forgotten gold.

Ok the intro to this did something really cool. The deep bass voices layering on the melody line is legit so nuanced. The fact that you can pick out both Jonathan and Peyton in the basso profundo notes is some intensely cool mixing under the guitar. The fact that they keep using those deep bass voices through the song as an instrument instead of holding the note on a bass instrument is super cool too, and I'm quite excited to see if they'll release an acapella version of this one, because the whole mix has so much vocal power layered into it that you could totally replace the percussion and the guitar with voices. Bassy bassy love, and the metal styling here just works SO WELL with this particular poem. Tolkien just lends his work so well to power metal, and it could be argued that some of power metals oldest poetic styling comes from Tolkiens work, since he did so much with the anglo saxon and the style of edda poetry, and a lot of power metal draws from that lyrical styling. I'd LOVE to see what y'all could do with some of the other really amazing music from this series. Boromirs Lament when?
@stupidanon5941
@stupidanon5941 Жыл бұрын
You're modest, calling yourself 'Musical Appreciation' while also taking note of the Anglo-Saxon alliterative verse, which features even more prominently in these particular lyrics than most of Tolkien's other poems. Sure, poetry and music are related, but you've clearly expanded your knowledge beyond that one subject.
