Red Bull Flugtag is an annual event in which competitors attempt to fly a homemade aircraft off a platform 33 feet in the air. This year, Flugtag came to Boston and the MIT Monkey Ballers entered the competition.

If you had found an RC pilot, you would have flown that machine. When I saw the first part of the video, I said your center of gravity was off. On the day of the actual flight, you had absolutely no airspeed. That's why it went straight down. You would think that someone from MIT would know this.

im an RC pilot with 25 years experience building and flying, from the moment i saw that thing on the ramp i knew would be a failure! angle of attack , elevator negative, not sufficient wingspan, airfoil too thick and so on!! and im not an engineer...
@songbird6248
@songbird6248 5 жыл бұрын
Jean Carton you should know more about the competition. Obviously it’s span limited. Of the problems you listed only one is relevant: the negative elevator angle. If you look up the current world record you’ll see it was basically the same design. That’s optimal for the given constraints. You should understand them before you comment.
@gertnood
@gertnood 5 жыл бұрын
@ Jean Carton No you're not an engineer, thank goodness, because all those reasons are baloney.. except for the fact that the full flying stab was in the hard down position but you didn't catch on that the angle was too ridiculous to be intentional did you? It's not by design. Wingspan is irrelevant as long as there is enough area, esp. in these short glides esp. without turning, the airfoil isn't thick, what angle of attack are you referring to other than the elevator knocked out of whack?

Finally! A non-idiot post with valid constructive criticism! Not sure why everyone else with no education feels the need to chime in on the gliders aerodynamics that they know nothing about. The problem is lack of breadth in the education. Fortunately for these students, this is one way they gained some of that breadth!

As an engineer I agree with you 100%. It is even worse now with the advent of 3D modeling and 3D printing. You have a generation of new engineers with no idea of how to actually make the things they come up with, meaning machine, mold, cast, stamp, etc. let alone how to dimension and measure anything. Every engineer needs to work with a machinist, assembler, inspector, etc. to learn the realities of how their pipe dreams are realized. Engineers are getting as bad as architects who are famous for making beautiful building designs which are structural nightmares to realize.
@kennethfharkin

@@Pandainapandasuit They changed a critical factor, the Center of Gravity, and did not bother to look how that may impact key areas of the design other than the one item they were trying to address. That deserves a smack with a rolled up newspaper right on the snout.

My degree is in "Industrial Technology".. a mix of engineering and manufacturing.. It's a major that I think was perfect for me. As a freshman, I got involved in the SAE Design challenges, and helped build a Formula-style car. Near the end of the semester, as I was taught how to use a milling machine (well, taught enough to make it work and make parts), there were senior mechanical engineers coming in and didn't know how to utilize the machinery. This freshman was teaching seniors on the use of a milling machine.. Now, granted.. I did get my initial help from other senior level engineers that taught me early in college. I later went on to know more about milling machines, CNC machines, Welding, and woodworking.. and did get a bachelors degree from the engineering college I attended. It still helps me almost every day.

I think the message of this video is to accept failure and step forward. To put things in practice and not stay stuck in theory. Then try to make an analysis of why the design didn't worked and how the solve the problem(s). The Wright brothers used the test-fail formula to invent the first successful airplane. Every corporation of aviation or automobile industry are constantly testing their prototypes before launching a new model to the market. For example, in formula 1 race cars engineers do computer simulations, wind tunnel tests and then try the cars in the tracks. This a fundamental part of engineering. PS. Sorry for my english.
