Researchers out of the Camera Culture Group at the MIT Media Lab have developed a novel imaging system that can gauge the distance of objects shrouded by fog so thick that human vision can't penetrate it. This system could be a crucial step toward self-driving cars. (Learn more: news.mit.edu/2018/depth-sensin...)

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, and technology; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place.
The MIT KZfaq channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video.

The system tests were static but a car is moving and so may be the objects in its path. Does the system have the latency that would enable it to work under dynamic conditions?

Would sonar fit as better solution in this situation? It works ok through water. Even if it has a longer delay won't it be more reliable? Somebody please answer this ,why why not with an explanation.

How about using radio waves produced from car to hit the object ahead and come back to sensors, and computer screen inside the car can show that an object, say a car is this much distance ahead?

What if such system can be implemented on airplanes, that would be a major breaktrough, no more crashings on the ground or on sudden pooping up mauntains, they could use sonar systems as well aside from this system to get around that fog problem for good.

Apparently, it does not. Smoke grenades are filled with sulphur and compounds of carbon with different molecular structures and much denser than just H2O. This could lead the team to looking at a better alternative to this.

Can it detect people on a clear day so the car doesn't run people over and kill them? If so the uber cars could have used that a week ago
@xponen
@xponen 6 жыл бұрын
@Noel Pytlik, it is 100% Uber's fault. The maker of the LIDAR system claim their LIDAR should have no problem detecting the cyclist, so the one who killed the cyclist was the Uber car/AI made by Uber.
@xponen
@xponen 6 жыл бұрын
@Noel Pytlik , no, the cyclist already paid for her negligence (Death), the Uber didn't. Uber is negligence as well and they need to pay for it as well.

Yes, it really saves the human's life from the inevitable car crashes. Just wonder can we use this kind same tech into the raining condition. Of course there are multiple factors involving car crash not only visual part, but also the other mechanical part from the vehicles and the road conditions in raining as well as drivers' well beings............................... STF.................

Why not use LIDAR?
@xponen
@xponen 6 жыл бұрын
this is LIDAR. LIDAR is "measures distance to a target by illuminating the target with pulsed laser light and measuring the reflected pulses with a sensor", 100% same as this video.

this research is bullshit....using LASER to see through fog ...knowing the fact that light is scattered away by the water vapours....people have determined ways to image the ground profile without actually digging up the ground, they did not use lasers. My point is you cannot see through the wall using Light. Use microwaves instead for better imaging. And by the way on funny side you could have just used blower instead to clear up the fog, i bet it would have atleast given you visibilty of 3-4 meters (because 57 cm is too low:)). So develop a powerful blower instead to blow away the fog. Simple Solution.
