@@styx85 Fair nuff. Is it important though? Right now, were seeing the complete destruction of ideas put forward by our ancestors our parents our communities for the sake of diversity. The thing is the world moves rapidly and changes with culture. This is a good thing when you add to the future but its not what we are seeing today. It's just destruction of the past. I think it is ok to allow people to abbreviate as long as the meaning is the same. The idea is held up. there are hundreds of languages fighting for power with there own little nuances. The problem is how do you convey those ideas when they mean different things to different people. We don't have the time to learn them all so the linking words, perfect spelling and grammar is not important.

For Mitchell and Webb Check out, "Corner Shop", "Vectron" and of course "Are We The Baddies?" "Bon Apple Tea" is a good example of the "Egg Corn" that's where we don't remember the phrase exactly, but we make up something that sounds similar and it kind of works. Basically the sketches are set during WW2 - however they talk modern day slang in them . . . if they won't let you show the longer compilations (8-12 mins in length), then do the same as you do here and just add them together singly with gaps between them . . . 👍

"Did you ever look for the F. Scott Fitzgerald?" Was once a question from a Minneapolis morning radio personality while interviewing an ocean explorer who looks for old shipwrecks. They were referencing the Edmund Fitzgerald which sank in Lake Superior in the 1970's. Sorry...but that was the best literary reference I could muster. Now I'll be self conscious of my speech all day...avoiding phrases and words for fear of using them wrong.

25 or so years ago, my wife and I had another couple over to the house for dinner and some games. I don't recall the name of the game, but I do remember that it involved cards and two teams. We played couple against couple. The idea was that when I picked a card, I was supposed to pick a word from it, share that word with the other team and I would have to say tings to get my wife to guess correctly within an allotted time. I knew that I couldn't lose when one of the words was "revolution." I shared my pick with the other team and then to my wife I said, "This year I am going to make a New Year's..." Without a beat missed, my wife said, "revolution." We all had a laugh, at her expense, obviously. It's great to intimately know your game partner!

I've heard a few bilingual pronunciation traps. We have a substantial francophone population in Canada. An example being an anglophone learning french pronouncing "Merci beaucoup" as something closer to "Mercy buckets". On the flip side french doesn't use a lot of the breathy "H" as we do in english. It can some times show up in their accent with words like "hockey" or "hotel" before getting accustomed to it.

FWIW, the easiest way to remember the difference between "less" and "fewer" is to remember how English distinguishes stuff from things. With stuff, you never use a plural (for example, milk, air, justice, hope or bread) - these use "less". You can have less stuff. Things, by contrast, are those nouns that can be singular or plural (potatoes, dogs, asteroids, items etc.) - these use "fewer". The technical name for this distinction is that the nouns are uncountable (stuff) or countable (things).

I was going to shoot you with a wet noodle for pronouncing the "t" in the word often, but fortunately for us both 😂 I looked it up and both pronunciations are in fact correct. In researching the matter. I discovered an interesting observation that said Americans tend to emphasize vowels, whereas the British tend to emphasize consonants. Perhaps that in part helps explain the divergence. My Mom used to hate when a local baseball announcer would pronounce the word strength without the "g." That word is "enigste" while it should be "enige" (don't bother trying to pronounce that lol), the problem with that word is that "enige" means "the only one" (roughly translated for ease of understanding). While "enigste" implies a step beyond that, basically saying "the only onecest" (or something) it's more one than one... but it isn't two or more, yeah it makes no sense lol. I agree. I start twitching when I hear "could care less." It's almost like people don't understand what they're saying. Another that gets me agitated a little is the way many, especially Americans, use "bring" in a "motion away" context. "Bring" is motion towards, and "take" is motion away.
