This week just gone I left home extra early for work one morning, but instead of parking up at the yard in Rockdale, I detoured a little further into the neighbouring suburb of Kogarah. On Wednesday I caught up with good old Mick, one of the fellow garbage enthusiasts here on KZfaq and Flickr. Like myself he also works for SITA, but operates in the St George regional contract which covers Rockdale, Hurstville and Kogarah during the week. He started the garbage career working for the in-house team at Sutherland Council on the rear loaders, then scored a job in St George where he started on the rear loaders and got trained up on a side loader. Now he’s got an allocated run and SL42 as his fulltime truck, covering mostly recycling, but also doing green-waste shifts twice a fortnight.
On Wednesday the whole of Kogarah Council gets serviced, being the biggest day for the St George crew and requires extra trucks to get the job done. There are also numerous main roads running all throughout the council which require early morning collections to avoid a whole lot of disruption and pissed off members of the public during the morning. Thus, most of the fleet is out collecting by 4:30am, but plenty are going as of 4am and some are out as early as 3:30am for that even earlier start. The council has requested that the main road and CBD services are complete by 6am, so the early starts are condoned and the trucks and drivers get to let rip in the darkness. Unlike Warringah and Randwick with councillors who have their heads shoved really far up their arse, Kogarah councillors are smart and realise waste services are hazardous and should be done at a safe time, so they allow early morning pick-ups.
On one week Mick begins a green-waste run in the early hours on the western side of the council and on the following week he does recycling in and around the Kogarah CBD. On the week he does recycling, the particular area is the green-waste zone, so he actually bypasses all the houses and only services the unit blocks and commercial bins with weekly collections. In the video we start on the very first bins along the Princes Hwy, work along the council border and move into the backstreets and laneways. As you may notice there isn’t much mercy for the residents in the area, basically tough shit if you get woken up and disturbed by crashing glass and a revving Cummins engine. All I can say is that it was bloody refreshing being out there during early morning domestic collections for the first time in two years, plus it was awesome reminiscing with one of the mean machines I used to drive in St George.

I recently filmed this and it is really cool to see a video of it when it was a lot newer! It still has old sita mudflaps currently which I thought was really cool, it also sounds just about the same as it does in this video. I also love the area this is filmed in! Great Work!

+VictorianGarbo® Yep that's a sick sound when the gearbox goes between reverse and drive, almost like a rumbling tease before it revs up and powers ahead :D These trucks have done a lot of work since those original Kogarah videos, some still look alright but. SL42 has been going for just short of 8 years now along with the other 07 Rockdale originals.

Love your great story and description MitchellM15 - makes for interesting reading. Liam has lots of footage of SL42 near our unit in Arncliffe and has met Mick too, so he will enjoy reading and watching this when he is back from Callala Bay!

Nice shots Mitch and good operating Mick ! I like the early morning setting of this video and enjoyed watching the few lane way pickups. I see Kogarah has the weekly recycling setup for most apartments which is the right way to do it ! Is it just the one or two loads of weekly recycling on this particular Wednesday in Kogarah ? Mick very cheeky what you did at 12:15 I know some drivers who do that whenever theres a pile of cleanup/furniture/electricity box close to the bin they just place it on top as a photo competition between a few blokes in the yard :P Got to get out there and get SL42 and Mick on video soon :)

+AussieGarbo67 Early morning setting makes this video what it is, boring if it's daytime action, no fun at all ;) All three of the St George councils have weekly unit recycling, saves a heap of extra bins once a fortnight, also more capacity to recycle when it's done weekly. FYI both Hurstville and Rockdale even have twice a week garbage collection for the units! Mick squashes in two loads on this day, takes the first out of the CBD and the second comes out of the neighbouring residential area. He's not the only truck doing the recycle in the greens zone either, easily a couple of loads worth for another truck around Hurstville.

+MitchellM15 Sweet cheers for the info Mitch on the St George contract never knew all the units had weekly recycling thought it was just a few larger complexes, weekly recycle is the way it should be done across all councils :)

Were all of the St. George councils originally separate? and separately contracted to cleanaway?

Hurstville and Kogarah were contracted to Cleanaway. Rockdale had Veolia.

+MegaDirtyHands Zac hammered the nail on the head. Each council transitioned into the regional contract well apart but - Rockdale started in January 2008, Kogarah started in November 2009 and Hurstville kicked off in July 2010. SL42 is one of the original Rockdale trucks along with SL41 in another upload, then the Kogarah units arrived (eg. SL65 and SL68 in other videos) and the rest came around once Hurstville commenced. Once all the councils were involved they rezoned all the service days (Rockdale Mon/Thu, Hurstville Tue/Fri, Kogarah Wed) and got all the trucks in a group to be utilised together on any given day.
