Animation isn't a genre, it's a medium. The entire concept of a "best animated picture" award shows how much the academy doesn't respect or understand what animation is

Legit like “best animated” could be an anime movie, a cartoon movie like boss baby, an adult animated film, a horror animated film.. like those are all vastly different movies, they only share their medium.. it would be like having a “best movies with human actors”.. that’s such a broad spectrum that fits several things.

Animation was not originally "intended for children". That was a stigma that was created by Hannah Barbera in the 70s when they effectively cornered the market of televised animation with nonstop clones and copies of the same shows. Why? Because it was cheap to recycle backgrounds and cels from previous episodes using the same run cycles.

I would say it was even earlier. In the 60s, cheap cartoons were already used in tv ads to sell cereal to children. So does the main writer and director of this movie, Michael Rianda! He wrote and directed The Mitchells versus the Machines, but the marketing only focused on the producers, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord's previous work in animated films from Sony and Warner Brothers. You were a HUGE fanatic of Gravity Falls when it aired new episodes and you made plenty of videos speculating about things or predicting what would happen in the next episode to come. You should be all over this bad news related to a film you covered in several videos when it first came out, when it is written and directed by somebody with a name and a voice that YOU would recognize from being a lesser-known writer/voice actor in Gravity Falls like Alex Hirsch! If you did not know that the name Michael Rianda exists, then who was the writer, the director, and the voice of Aaron Mitchell in The Mitchells versus the Machines? Few people ever talk about Michael Rianda in all of this, Gravity Falls or Mitchells versus The Machines. Who is he, Bruno Madrigal?

I am an animator, and I originally heard the generalization of the speech, "animation is for kids to enjoy and for parents to endure", by people on twitter and tiktok. At first I though that someone at the Oscars said that exact quote and I was just mad and annoyed. But then I actually saw what was actually said and I started to cry. It made me feel as if all of the work that I have done or will do will only be background noise to adults and time wasters for kids. In the moment I felt ashamed of my career choice, but now I'm more determined to improve my skills in spite of what others may think. The work that I do to improve my animation and story telling skills matter and I hope that one day I'll create something that will inspire others to do the same.

It's only pg-13 but ffs those are big topics and pg-13 is still not for little kids😭😭 the other stuff is enjoyable for adults too, but that especially... wow. Part of it too is that giving movies with these styles Oscar wins means that we're encouraging a new era of animation- one where people are less afraid to experiment with style, especially when it comes to CGI. Spider-Verse was praised for it's animation, and I'm sure that'll encourage companies in the future to try new things. Hell, Pixar released Turning Red recently, and that's somewhat different from the typical 'non-offensive' CGI we see in, for example, Encanto.

Your commentary and editing is so beautiful. Truthfully though this movie truly shows how communication and differences between each person are not only normal but it's so heartwarming and entertaining. In addition to some representation without it being the main focus of a character it's just calmly normalized. But as for the animation with main stream public in general everything is targeted towards children for the safety of revenue. And most of the times looks the same unless it's a series online that expands the stylization because there are no limits to creativity. As an aspiring animator myself it's understandable for people to go into animation with that safety blanket but it's not the only form of expression animation can bring with topics that can be discussed visually. Hell even CN or Disney animation tackles adult topics like Infinity Train, Amphibia, Owl House.

The problem with the best animated feature category is that it's too broad. It's basically the best picture for animation but then does that mean best story, best animation, best USE of animation, most innovative animation, best overall, etc, etc. there just isn't enough for us to know. I still think Mitchell's should've won this year but for example, if it was most innovative animation then Loving Vincent (which was animated by having a gajillion OIL PAINTINGS. My dad always tells me animation is for kids- and he set up one of my childhood movies as Watership Down. Even if animation was only for children it’s sucks to have a mindset where you hole it down for only one age, when animations like Encanto and Turning Red represent many generations of relatability.

It’s very diffrent from my family but a dad who loves nature and wants to live in the woods but cant (and is very good at survival skills) a smart blond younger brother, a brunette mom who is a teacher and a creative older sibling with red hair going to college is relatable. My family luckily accepts my job but my mom is still struggling with the idea of me leaving for college in less than 2 years and we all felt somthing special about this movie while the whole thing is also just super entertaining. It’s great and it’s diffrent.

Sony has been honestly my favourite studio when it comes to animated movies in recent times. The Mitchell’s VS the Machines has some of the best animation I’ve seen come out of a movie and it’s a shame it came out when theatres weren’t really open, and Spider-Man into the Spider-verse is one of my all time favourite movies I’ve seen, with such an incredible yet simple story, visuals that actually feel like a comic book put to film, and they actually made Miles an interesting and likeable character (which isn’t usually the case, he’s kinda just “Spider-Man but black” most of the time). They’re not the best when it comes to live action, just look at Morbius, but their animation has the best style, comedy, and story I’ve seen for any recent animated movies.

I feel like the thing that puts movies like The Mitchells vs The Machines in a category of the animation above movies like Encanto is how the animation and style is a direct part of the narrative whereas Encanto's animation feels more driven by a "make it feel Disney" end goal

"The mom who says she believes in you, but doesn't do the extra effort to show she believes in you". Literally this with my mom. I can't have a conversation with her about my field because she doesn't even put in the effort to know my field. I've attempted time and time again to teach her about the absolute basics of cameras, ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture. But she just can't... Even with mere measurements such as Gigabytes, the data she sees on her phone on a daily basis, she still goes "giga.. bite?"... Storage mom! Storage! Your phone has storage!

I'm Hispanic, specifically Cuban, so i will say encanto has a huge spot in my heart in getting that generational trauma and everything - but i did love this movie a lot and it had a ton of moments that felt more inspired and heartfelt than encanto did. I also have the fortune(?) Of having a terrible relationship with my dad and this movie made me cry so much. Like encanto having the grandma apologize and realize her mistakes, this movie gives a catharsis through that wish fulfillment, and I think it did it better.

Animation takes so much work to do and I always wondered what the reaction to the actors who participate in animated films. The Oscars seem to snub Animation time after time but the category was created because of Beauty and the Beast. I went to school for Animation and it really wasn't easy at all. I admit I dropped it after a year but to anyone who continued my hats off to you. The hard work, the patience, the pain, and everything it takes to create an animated film is a difficult but worth while process. Animation is made for everyone not just for kids.

Its hard to make me cry from something sad in a movie. But from the handful of times it has happened, I think maybe 1 or 2 was not an animated film. Animation can allow an artist to make everything perfect to what they want. No dealing with finding a real actor who looks, talks, and acts like you want. You dont need to find or make the right scenes. It is such a great medium that is constantly showing itself as making some of the best stories made into film. Yes a lot of kids stuff is animated, bright animation is just easy to grab a child attention. Just like how the Oscars doesn't compare literally all live action films with the Wiggles Movie, they should not assume all animated films are Boss Baby. People make whatever they want, and just because animation is great for kids content doesn't mean it cannot be used to make films that easily compete with any of the most successful Hollywood movies made.

Little fun fact: The song they use for that final fight scene uses samples from Dragostea Din Tei, a Romanian pop song that was part of a video meme of a guy dancing to it that went viral during early KZfaq (I believe people called him the "numa numa" guy). In elementary school circa 2011 I downloaded the song on my mp3 player and I still listen to it regularly even now! It was one of my favorite references to early meme culture from the movie because the song is so nostalgic for me.

I watched both The Mitchells vs The Machines and Encanto in a small time period and I loved both. I feel like I had more fun on Encanto but I am not saying it's ultimately better movie and it's hard to say which one is objectivelly better because they are SUPER good in different ways and I enjoyed them for different reasons. Although I am a person... a Disney fan who isn't very much into musicals, I think ALL Encanto songs are God tier bangers, written by Moana's songwriter, they are some of the best songs Disney has released ever. On the other hand TMvTM was a really great comedy and the "phone bad humor" and all the other aspects were really relatable to me. The family is very well written, they have really cute relationships, especially Katie and Aaron. Also poggers for the Luigi's Got Big Tiddies representation, that was cute as well. I must give Encanto some bonus points because it bought me with its songs even though I don't really like singing in movies (unless they are REALLY good songs like ones from Mulan or Hercules) but TMvTM had definitely way more creative and experimental animation because they tried to make something new and fresh and from 0, while Disney was just being Disney. Also the Oscars not appreciating real art is hella cringe and as the guys who are supposed to KNOW SHIT about movies this is a crime. A sin. A blasphemy.

Something Schaffrillas pointed out is that the "animation is for kids" joke doesn't even make sense for what they're covering in the moment when you consider one of the nominees was Flee, which is a horrific and mature story about a refugee escaping Afghanistan in an event that scarred both him and his family, plus it was the most traditionally animated film of the lot being in 2D. I think their disrespect for animation can be explained(but not excused) by Disney basically owning the Oscars. They own ABC, so they have a massive hand in what wins and what doesn't. Only about 6 out of the 20 so far Best Animated Feature winners aren't from Disney, plus Cruella had no right winning anything when it won Best Costume Design, then let the director rant about how "good" Cruella is. The "Animation is for kids" comment coming from them makes sense since, like you said, all they do is safe animated movies for kids. The last risk they took was Wreck-It-Ralph back in 2012 and they even managed to Emoji Movie that property. Even Pixar is more of a risk taker than them, seeing as movies like Soul and Ratatouille cover extremely deep seeded topics mainly for adults, and Turning Red is even more miraculous for being willing to accurately portray hormonal 13 year olds as well as what would be happening around that age in life. Essentially, Disney doesn't know any better and they don't know how to respect their audience, and especially not their piers in animation or filmmaking in general. As a streaming movie they were never gonna let Mitchells win, and the fact Raya was even nominated shows the state of the game when it comes to award ceremonies(Aside from maybe the Grammys) Screw off Disney, if anyone commits arson on Cindy's castle you can place your infinite money on it being me

Absolute favorite movie of 2021 without a doubt but I wish they fleshed out the Poseys more. They toyed with them POSING as the perfect family on social media but they should've shown their more vulnerable side during the apocalypse. Showing that they're as weird as the Mitchells in real life to push the message that there is no perfect family.

I don't think mitchells vs the machines should have won. NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG, I freaking loved the movie: the style is great, the story is surprisingly fun and relatable, and it's also the only movie that i've seen that manages to tell a story about millenials, boomers, phones and new technologies, and not making it cringe. But this year I decided to watch ALL of the films that were nominated to the academy awards, and after doing so, I immediately knew that "FLEE" was the best animated movie. I'm not going to bore you with the details, but I LOVED this movie. It was charming, interesting and breathtaking. The story is an interview/docummentary transformed into animation (to hide the identity of the interviewed) and it tells the story of amin (fake name), who was forced by the war to escape afganistan, and went through lots of trouble to reveal and understand his own identity and sexuality. All of this while he struggles to open about his past for the first time. Anyway, I don't know if bionic knew about "FLEE", or if he just watched "encanto" and "mitchells vs the machines" and decided to make a video. But to me it feels like you can't say that a movie is the one that deserved the award if you haven't seen the other nominees.

Oh, and I also want to say that although animation can do amazing things that could never be achieved in non-animated movies, that doesn't mean that animation is better than every other medium: that's just not true. And the fact that you pointed out that "soul" had regular animation was pretty sketchy. Soul is an amazing movie and I feel like "regular animation" isn't something that defines such an amazing take on life and the meaning of existence.

It's kinda interesting that recently Sony pictures animation as a studio is one of the more creative big western animation studios out there as two recent films in their catalogue are definitely more stylized and different to other animated films. In fact the recent Marvel films being all about the multiverse would not have been considered if not for the success of Into the Spiderverse as a film. Mitchell and the Machines does things that Disney would never consider doing, for eg the main character is gay(and you know Disney would not even have any main star of the film be gay because they think that being gay is somehow not family friendly although they have so many straight romances) which tells you all you need to know. So personally I'm hoping more animation studios in the western world go back to creative styles and the fact with animation you can be creative. Like here's an example of Disney being creative, Treasure Planet and the Emperor's New Groove(they both had very creative animation style that was different as well). But that is kinda where they have fallen off now because I'll be honest 2D animation tends to be more creative than 3D animation and that is why Japan still has some of the most beautiful animated films in the world because a lot of films in the Japanese animation scene are still 2D animated films. But seeing 3D animation be used more creatively is something I do like and something that hasn't really been done.

The first sitcom family and TV show specifically made for both kids and adults to enjoy. They have an old commercial where The Flintstones are advertising cigarettes ffs.
