“The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell,” has got to be the most repeated line in biology. It has been firmly inserted into our middle school textbooks for years, and the powerhouse nickname stems from the mitochondria’s energy production capabilities, but the mitochondria offers so much more than that.
To start, when discussing all the mitochondria in our bodies, we use mitochondrion for singular, mitochondria for plural.
Each Mitochondrion looks different from cell to cell, and there are hundreds of thousands of mitochondria floating around in your cells-though that number also depends on what tissue we are referring to.
But, regardless of shape and number, all mitochondria do have some structural things in common: They each have two membranes-one outer layer, one inner layer, and some space in between them.
While the outer membrane works like a protective but permeable layer, letting different compounds in or out of the mitochondrion, the inner membrane is where some important biology happens to manufacture ATP (or Adenosine triphosphate, an organic compound that provides energy to drive processes in living cells).
So how did we develop mitochondria and what are all the things they do for our bodies?
Find out more about endosymbiosis theory and all the different roles your mitochondria play in this Human.

I'm a biomedical researcher just working with a mitochondrial protein called IDH. IDH is involved is normally involved in the citric acid cycle (the pathway which eventually drives the production of ATP in mitochondria) but specific mutations inIDH are also frequently found in different cancer types. The reason is that mutated IDH can lead to the production of a harmful molecule which messes up a lot of proteins leading to the repression of genes which would normally protect against the development of cancer (I would love to make a video about that mechanism one day). After so many years of research, mitochondria still show fascinating new sites!

Hey! Long time no see. Fellow researcher here stalking the same corners of the web. Another thing I've been shocked about for a while since I began doing research with mitochondria is that the textbooks never accurately describe their structure. They form long networks in some cells that are constantly fissing and fusing. I never knew they formed such networks existed or that fissing and fusing was so important (especially to cancer) until I began looking into its mechanics.

@@Alexe829 As it's a degenerative condition I knew my health would deteriorate but in my case thats been reasonably slow and consistant. Unfortunately I got glandular fever and ended up with post viral Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, fibromyalgia, POTS, Mast cell ectivation syndrome etc which often seem to accompany each other. In spite of all that I've learned that it is possible to maintain a certain level of wellness, have a reasonable quality of life, and also contribute to society in a meaningful way. I don't generally give advice except that which I found most helpful at the beginning of my journey. 1. Listen to your body. Every peraons journey and symptoms can be quite different. 2. Join a supportive community. As there is no cure and treatment options are limited finding a helpful supportive community is essential as they can share tips and tricks for staying as healthy as possible and offer support when things get difficult. 3. Start low, go slow. If you ever try something recommended by others start very slowly and on low dose/setting as your body may not respond in the way you might expect. 3. Be honest about your symptoms, even the weird ones. Mitochondrial issues can cause all sorts of bizarre sensations and dysfunction. 4. Find a dr you trust not to make you feel stupid for bringing up things that might not make sense at the time, or that blames everything on your mental health. Though mental health issues should be addressed, gasslighting patients is unprofessional, appropriate and uncalled for. If a dr does that to you, don't waste your time with them. 5. If you don't end up being diagnosed with a mitochondrial disorder font give up searching for a diagnosis. Just because the nedical fraternity spent know what is causing your symptoms, doesn't mean that it's nothing. Don't give up, don't give in, you deserve a diagnosis however long that takes. I hope all is going well and that you find peace and confort in your life whatever form that takes.

Powerhouse of a factory or process plant is called cogen often. Referring to co generation. Co because it is connected to the Grid or a primary power generation plant. Cogen or Gen#. Was a industrial analytical device technician for long time.

Look up parental mitochondrial DNA inheritance. I remember seeing developments that might put in question the maternal inheritance theory.

I have had doxirubicen when I had Hodgkins lymphoma, post chemo I developed me/cfs. Which is suspected to be a dysfuntion of ATP and mitochondria. Along with EBV could this have a link to my illness? Curious to delve into this further 🤔

Mitochondria's relationship to cancer is far stronger than you indicate. Please expand with a video on the Warburg Effect - a very recent area of research focus and something most people with cancer can take advantage of themselves to greatly increase the effectiveness of standard therapy.

I feel it's the most obvious choice. The heart _needs_ energy or else everything dies. I'd have replaced liver cell with neuron, since the brain is known to take up about 1/4 of your total energy needs. When I think of energy-intensive organs, the liver wouldn't be in the top 5 for me.

@@abel3557 The burden of proof is on those who would try to assert such an absurdity. The need to present peer reviewed material to discredit this nonsensical notion equates to the need to present peer reviewed material as to why 2+2 doesn't equal 5. It may be helpful to look at what a theory actually is.

the mitochondrion is also responsible for weight loss as it's the only organelle that can burn fatty acids in the cell and tha allows us to use the energy stored in our body fat
