BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A MITSUBISHI ASX FROM OSV: bit.ly/2B3lXKD
The Mitsubishi ASX is the compact crossover that you probably left off your shortlist. Does the latest improved version deserve your attention? Jonathan Crouch reports.
Market and Model
Pricing starts at just over £20,000 - perhaps a little more than you might have expected to pay for a small SUV, but few contenders in the class are quite as large inside as this one and almost none of them can offer an engine as large as 2.0-litres in size, so if you're doing sector comparisons, make sure you're comparing apples with apples.
That base price applies to the entry-level 'Dynamic' variant, which comes only with manual gearbox and 2WD. Alternatively, there's plusher 'Exceed'-spec, which comes in either manual 2WD guise or as a 4WD automatic. 'Dynamic' trim gets you 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with auto levelling, an SDA infotainment system with a reversing camera, heated front seats, cruise control, automatic air conditioning and a Keyless Operation System. 'Exceed'-spec adds a panoramic glass roof with black roof rails, leather upholstery with an electric driver's seat, a TomTom navigation system, Blind Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, black roof rails and LED front fog lights. Across the range, two fresh colours make an appearance - Red Diamond and Oak Brown.
Cost of Ownership
You wouldn't expect a 2.0-litre petrol engine in a car of this class to be especially clean and economic and this one isn't. The quoted NEDC-rated combined cycle figures see the manual front-driven model managing up to 40.4mpg, with the auto 4WD variant managing up to 38.7mpg. WLTP-rated CO2 emissions vary between 171 and 185g/km. Helping this car in its quest for reasonable efficiency is a whole package of so-called 'Intelligent Motion' features, including low rolling resistance tyres, a high efficiency alternator, an intelligent battery sensor and regenerative braking that claims back energy that would otherwise be lost when you brake.
Something you might be encouraged by as a potential buyer is the decently long five year warranty - though that's slightly spoiled by the brand's insistence on limiting it to 62,500 miles. As you'd expect in this day and age, there's a 12-year anti-perforation warranty. And three years of pan-European roadside assistance and homestart are included in the price. You can keep maintenance costs down by purchasing a decent value pre-paid servicing pack which takes care of the cost of garage visits for three years or 36,000 miles.
Summary
Mitsubishi reckons that ASX buyers most appreciate this car's simplicity, reliability, comfort and price. It also gives you a gutsier 2.0-litre engine than would normally be fitted to a small SUV of this sort, which might be of interest for those who might perhaps want to tow a small caravan. Others will appreciate the fact that there's almost as much rear seat room and boot space as you'd get from a Qashqai-class SUV from the next class up.
Yes, there are more dynamic and efficient choices you could make in this sector, but get yourself the right deal on this Mitsubishi and it could still make a practical choice if you like the restyled look.

I have had my petrol ASX3 since 2011. I am not a fan of the new front panels but otherwise the new one seems to be a nice upgrade. It is not a sporty car but it is cheap to run (40 mpg), roomy (bigger than a Juke in the passenger area by miles), comfortable, ultra reliable, in 60K miles not one fault and on Michelin Crossclimate tyres it will be fine in 2WD in ice and snow. Best of all the controls are buttons and knobs, no poking at screens and taking your eyes of the road.

I have a 2012 with 130K. I have only replaced the front dampeners. They are great cars. Overpriced compared to the Nissan Qashqai's stopped their success.

We dont need turbos on every damn engine. There is an obsession with torque and pulling power, we all managed perfectly well years ago before they started fitting turbos willy nilly to everything. I really think a lot of people today don't know how to drive properly, and expect the car to get them out of trouble. Bad drivers want and need a lot of power to mask their lack of driving ability. Disagree with me ? Observe the motorways on a daily basis and you will see my point. I laugh when I see the front end of cars smashed up because the driver hasnt been looking where they are going or have left it too late to change lanes or exit at a junction etc. Those people who are so damn impatient get everything they deserve. As for this car, a great review, a solid reliable long term option by the looks of things. Mitsubishi CVTs are also excellent, having driven the Outlander.

On my second now. I saved by opting for a "Black" edition with the previous front end. At £16000 otr it was a steal, with service plan and towbar thrown in. Loaded with kit and ultra-reliable. Some call it boring, l call it well made, safe, reliable and as well put together as any car out there. Dealerships are excellent too. It tows just over a ton, returns 45+ mpg and is a good motorway cruiser. It has no vices and is a proper SUV.

Mitsubishi is a low price Japan brand. Some cars are better some are worse. As a full time car mechanic, get a Toyota instead! This one is even worse than VAG.

Have to disagree. I have had 3 Mitsubishi's in a row. The first one is a 2011 Lancer, which I still own. In eleven years it has had zero issues with it. It still has the original wiper blades. Nothing has broken and it has cost me nothing but regular servicing. The second car is a 2012 Outlander. I had that car for 8yrs. Again, nothing broken, nothing spent and 100% reliable. The third car is a later model Outlander. It is only a couple years in, but this has had no issues either. Thats 480,000km on three Mitsubishi cars. Nothing spent, nothing broken and 100% reliable. I have owned Mazdas, Nissans, Toyota, Holden and Fords. All of them have had issues at some point. Even the Toyota had a costly breakdown.

@@MattyClivingthedream Really!? Nothing spent in 8 years. Poor car… If you wanna keep a car in good condition, you’ll have to spend money on it. Fluid changing, brake pads, plugs, filters, washing and vax, etc But your super mitsu seem to run without all that. Good luck…
@MattyClivingthedream

@@Skyisnotalimit All three cars have been regularly serviced as per the book. But nothing else has been spent on them. I clearly outlined in my comment, that you clearly didn't read. I feel sorry for anybody that sends their cars to you, as you have no idea.
