As a poor American who earns minimum wage, this makes me sad. We desperately need more cheap new cars in America and carmakers are instead cancelling all their cheap entry level cars and forcing us to take out 7-8 year car loans to buy their expensive bloated crossovers/trucks. Apart from price, there's a joy that comes with driving a small light nimble car that can never be experienced with a big heavy crossover. I drive a 2020 Chevy Spark LS CVT and it's so much fun to drive! RIP Mirage! I will miss you!

I agree with you. But automakers need to make cheap cars that aren't just God awful. Automakers have raised the bar so high in so many aspects that when you get into one of these cars, it is a shock how backward it is. So many people grow up with used cars that have more features and better quality than these things. It's hard to go backwards. The deisgns are also never going to have mass market appeal for Americans. And safety is a huge concern. The Mirage killed more drivers than any other car.

A very well engineered car. Yes, it is a bit basic and slow, but it does what it is meant to do so increadibly well and reliably that I doubt I will ever have a better car for my taste. I have one now 8 years in harsh climatic conditions. No rust, not rattles, no defects during those eight years. Just as new. (85000 miles on the clock). I have 52 mpg with a calm driving style.

I'm actually pissed that the ENTIRE auto industry is moving away from providing an ACTUAL economy/budget car segment, and forcing everyone to go upmarket or buy used. I like that almost every company is shifting their focus to EV's, but yet again, they're completely ignoring the economy segment with those as well since its all new tech.

This is sad. I know that the car itself most likely wasn’t appealing to most people but it had one sole purpose: reliable A to B transportation. We need more cars like instead of big trucks that start at $40K and can nearly reach the six figure mark.

I want any color but black, being in a desert. I do see a White Diamond ES in transit, the paint is about $300 more. But I am going to do my best to get it. Out the door, the ES will cost about $18,800. I need to add, the cheapest Corolla out the door is about $25,000. Which is a lot more than the Mirage still. About $6,000 more.

I'll be one of the few people in the comments that actually owns and adores this car it seems. I'm really sad to see it being discontinued. I bought the car last year in December. An SE 2023 model. Replacing my 2018 Jeep Cherokee. I've loved every moment so far that I've owned this little car! Great gas mileage, very cheap to fill up, plenty of trunk space since the seats fold down, and beautifully simplistic! For the first time ever, I've actually felt comfortable driving in a car and wanting to drive around the city more just to enjoy the experience. Mostly because it's better suited to my size since I'm short. I even love hearing the noises from the engine when I accelerate and decelerate, and the noisy startup. I can fit into any parking space available with extra room to spare! I'm also one of the two people in town (that I've seen so far) with this model design car. So it feels pretty special and unique whenever I spot someone else in town with one the older modeled ones. If I'm lucky, I can keep the car safe and running for the rest of my driving days. I have a dumb dream of one day buying a second yellow version in the future, and retrofiting it with popup headlights. Though it'll likely never happen since that would be pretty expensive.

Great content Krik, as always I currently have three Mitsubishi in my household: the 2015 Lancer Evolution X GSR (I brought with my first job sign-on bonus), the 2019 Outlander PHEV SEL(I got it during Covid when there was a massive discount on it for a daily commute, and car pool lane accessibility), and the 2023 Outlander 40th Anniversary edition (My wife and I brought as she needs a good daily). All of them perform flawlessly in terms of reliability; It is sad to be an EVO X owner to see Mitsubishi step away from the sedan/4WD sports car era (the parts on my 2015 EVO X are becoming hard to come by even after 8 years). Every time I drive it, it brings back the era of tuner cars and my childhood dreams. But nowadays, it is more like a one-trick thrill pony for the weekend back road with no comfort whatsoever. It is the best car in the world when you are just out of college and have worshiped Mitsubishi's Rally Heritage since 1992, and the S-AWC performance is something else; you got drive it to know it. However, coming from the interior of EVO X (designed in 2006, full of black plastic crap-38K OTD) to the 2019 Outlander (does the basic, still a lot of cheap plastic-20K OTD with 6K tax credit and 10K rebates), then to the 2023 Outlander 40th Anniversary edition(interior rivals if not better than major European luxury brands-40K OTD) I could say Mitsubishi are definitely making competitive mass market products compare to crazy 4WD performance car that only less than 1% of their target customer would buy. I have 'SOLD' two 2023 Outlanders to my friends (they were cross-shopping the new CX50 and CR-V) after they rode in my wife's car; the SEL Touring (MSRP 38K) two-tone interior is better than almost all other non-luxury compact crossovers at this price point. Also, there is 10 year/ 100K miles warranty to back the total cost of ownership up. And with the Ralliart brand returning and racing in Asia Cross Country Rally with their new Triton/L200 pickup, we might eventually see Mitsubishi back in Dakar Rally someday. So the future is promising for Mitsubishi. Also, it's worthwhile to point out that the Mitsubishi Raider shares the platform with the Dodge Dakota instead of the Nissan Frontier; it is an end-of-era DSM product like EVO IX and Montero Sport.

So stupid for them to kill it off. The demand for these affordable cars are going to always be there especially with gas prices the way they're going. Also if they're just going the route of pure SUVs then what's going to be different from them compared to other companies? They will probably lose out in that battle in my area considering there are barely any Mitsubishi dealers around.

Surprised the mirage lasted this long. It’s modern geo metro, as in the last “minimal car” in USA. I don’t see many missing or remembering this car 10 years from now but wish it could stay as an option for bargain shoppers. I see more minimal modern cars since I moved to europe where manual trans is still more common. Toyota aygo, Mitsubishi colt, Honda city are cars that are in EU but not USA. How unfortunate for Isuzu, I remember in the 90s they started to only sell SUV and trucks (Hombre, amigo, trooper, and my favorite: vehicross). This was probably why Isuzu left the US market but now car companies like Ford and Mitsubishi stop selling cars. Mitsubishi used to be cool, gt3000, eclipse, galant, lancer evo… and made the engines for Hyundai…. Their misfortunes should be studied as what not to do.

Tons of room when you fold down the back seat. If you are in the market for one, I'd recommend spending the extra money to get all the options. You can get push-button start, alloys and some other goodies for not much extra money. The mileage is insane, and the insurance is VERY low. Safety ratings are surprisingly good.

If sales never improved that would’ve left years ago, but now they’re experiencing growth in sales, even before the new Outlander was released. Mitsubishi is also occupying a niche market: affordable and reliable vehicles. Yes, all their models (except for the Outlander) are old, but they’re still selling because they’re more emphasized on the cost and reliability side rather than bells and whistles. And to be honest, a lot of manufacturers need to bring back affordable cars, which people actually need. Has automatic windshield wipers and climate control, good heat and AC, classic style handbrake (a positive in my book), heated seats, power windows with an auto switch for the driver window, push-to-start, cheap to maintain, alloy wheels, android/apple play, HD radio, six airbags, a four-star safety rating, and a metallic paint job all for about $16K. (that was purchased in 2023 with only 7800 miles on it - basically new) That's a hell of a lot of car for the money, not to mention the gas savings. All the people dissing this car are comparing it to cars that cost 2-3X as much. It's ridiculous.

The Mirage was just named the highest death rate small car per accident by the IIHS 12 days ago, no matter what price that would be a silly decision. The new versa and forte are much better for the price.

Yeah 99 percent of Americans drive gigantic 3 ton vehicles , because they think they look pretty driving them so yeah that what the mirage is gonna hurt if it crashes into a piece of crap 4 door junk truck . But it’s small and you don’t take up the whole lane like like they do, so you have room to avoid crashes with the huge monster american bus sized vehicles!

I think that the mitsubishi mirage is underestimate. It is slow to start, but above 40mph the car can move quickly. Had it do 110 no problem. Also wrc has the mirage r5. All wheel drive. 280hp. The last mitsubishi in my book.

I think there was an SE in 2019 with manual air conditioning controls... But in general it only came in ES..... In Canada 2023 you could get the 5 speed but only in white or silver... It had manual windows manual locks and no cruise control.... A real stripped model. To be honest it could have come as a top trim and special ordered only... I would have bought another 5spees

What are you talking about, I consistently get way better then epa. Road trips 70 to 80mph I get 44 to 45mpg, in the city I ATLEAST get 40mpg. When I really want to save on fuel I just set the cruise to 60mph sometimes 55mph if its less the 15miles down the freeway, will get mid to high 50mpg range, even after some city driving. I only get 36 to 38 on the freeway if am I HAULING ASS, I mean passing others at over 4k rpm and consistently over 80mph. Not sure why you would not be getting the same numbers, to be fair I have 99k miles on this car and am very familiar with driving it.

Mitsubishi has an enigma of a lineup in North America. The Outlander which is modern and way ahead of the Sport and Eclipse Cross. The Outlander Sport should’ve been replaced years ago however I understand the financial constraints of the time. They need a replacement like the XForce very soon and/or a small pickup like a Maverick competitor. If they could bring a small truck to market it would put this company on the map again for sure. All the parts and pieces are there with the Nissan alliance and it could happen.

The current Mirage was originally designed for emerging markets such as Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa, which is why it feels cheap overall. Hell, during the 2010s, the Kia Picanto and Hyundai i10 murdered the Mirage in Europe. Top Gear magazine gave the Mirage a score of 3/10 in 2013; in comparison, they i10 got an 8/10 and the Picanto a 7/10.
