We test the new Mitsubishi Outlander 2.5L and see what this midsize SUV is like to drive.

It’s the brand new Mitsubishi Outlander, and we’ve driven it extensively in town and country! It looks far more sophisticated outside, the interior is a huge upgrade, and it’s pretty affordable. So, what is the catch with the 2022 Outlander? Well, it comes down to the driving experience in today's Chasing Cars review, hosted by Tom Baker.
Designed to compete with everything from the Toyota RAV4 to the Mazda CX-5 and even CX-8, the seven-seat Outlander is now based on the next-gen Nissan X-Trail CMF-CD platform, and uses the Nissan 2.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol four-cylinder. Later, a new Outlander plug in hybrid will arrive for Australia.
Is this the best-value seven-seat family SUV on the market?

We've recently picked up a new 2WD Aspire in sterling silver with added factory toe bar, nudge bar and darkest legal tinted windows, and my wife is absolutely delighted! We were looking at the lower LS variant, but I wasn't overly enthralled by its interior cloth trim. We negotiated a good price on the Aspire that was only a couple of thousand dollars more, and it was an absolute no-brainer with the extra features, including heads-up display, automatic tailgate, much improved interior, 360 camera and larger 10.8 inch infotainment display. IMHO, the Aspire is the best value Outlander at the moment. Keep up the great work with your reviews.

Nissan engineering is suspect and leaves a big question mark on the brand. Mitsubishi is renowned for quality engineered cars that will last forever and I am concerned that some of what I like about the brand will be lost with the new Outlander. My last 3 cars have been Mitsubishi's and they are absolutely bullet proof. Not a single warranty claim, not a single issue over 410,000km.

I just traded my 2018 Outlander for the new 2022. Overall, a great improvement, however, I would suggest a few interior design changes. First, the door pockets next to the seats are somewhat narrower than I was used to. I carry a few pair of sunglasses as well as Rx glasses and it is more difficult to just reach down and grab a pair. The seatbelt is not as easy to access. The cup holders on the console are quite awkward to access as well. I miss the larger space in my old console storage as well as the removable tray inside. It was great fo spare change for the car wash. The switch for the rear hatch is located in a ridiculously awkward location. Other than that, the car is comfortable to drive, looks beefier than my 2018, and is an overall improvement.

I bought the fully loaded SEL Touring version here in the US a couple months back. Bought it for the looks, luxury, practicality & warranty. 10 Year/100K miles Powertrain & 5 year 60K bumper to bumper. I made some slight mods like blacking out the roof & side mirrors on my white model & widening the stance of the wheels by using spacers. I get compliments everyday while being asked what kind of car is that. The inside of the Touring version is the best for me. I look forward to sit in it's luxury everyday. I paid just over 40K US$ for mine, which at the time was a little more than I wanted to, but after 2 months ownership I'm appreciating the value and look forward to years of ownership.

I hear a lot about reliability, but most mainstream cars give no problems for first 5 years. All these issues come after that mark roughly. But good brands like toyota, Subaru, Mazda , Honda, even Mitsubishi keep going. Just make sure if u buy Holden's, ford's, get rid after 5 years or after warranty period

Good stuff Tom, thorough as always. Have been anticipating this for quite a while, think the exterior looks better than most others in the segment and the interior is a nice 7/10 for me. Little bit disappointing to hear about the handling/suspension but not totally surprised. I think the problem this car faces is that the Rav 4 and Tucson etc are just clearly going to handle better and the price (Elite Tucson) is comparable. So my question is, does this get lost in the segment? H6 is now the budget option, so the Outlander kind of sits in-between in no man's land. Looking to buy soon, so my wife will likely decide out of the H6, Koleos and potentially this. Would be keen to know your thoughts on how you would compare this to the likes of a H6 and Koleos for that reason, knowing it's quite a bit behind Tucson, Rav 4 etc. Thanks mate!

@@1989yassoo Outlander in Exceed - very happy. We got it for $48k, the light grey interior is superb. 'Hard' suspension is overstated - it's perfectly fine. My only gripe is the lack of power, it's really underwhelming ... but it's a family car so it's not a deal breaker. I like the N-Line Tucson Elite/Highlander. I wasn't a fan of the Kia Sportage's design, the Koleos really lacks in tech/features, H6 great value but a step behind the market, Rav4/CX5 overrated. IMO the Outlander is a great option/competitor, performance aside.

Interior looks great, love the suede. Still think a regular hybrid should be the go for this segment, will also give it more power. PHEV is an issue when you have have to pay the EV tax on every km driven, even petrol ones. I prefer the stying on the new X-Trail, will be interesting to see the comparison. The new e-power drive train sounds intersting too.

I already have this problem now with a 2014 Mazda 3 SP25GT. I have a Outlander purchased new in December 2020. I am quiet happy with it. The 2022 model as reported sounds good. Prefer smaller tyres. Wouldn't buy the new model as I don't like vehicles wit space saver tyres. With those, you are restricted to the speed you can travel at, distance you can go on one and you can't put a space saver to the front wheels. As that is the case the vehicle would have to carry 2 lifting jacks to ensure that the space saver is only put to the rear wheels. As a hypothetical where could you purchase a 20" tyre or space saver on the Australian Nullabor Plain.

My previous generation ZH Outlander did 210,000kms before it was traded and it operating perfectly at sale time. My local transmission mechanic said that Mitsubishi's CVT tend to not suffer failures and any failures, that he has worked on, have been due to lack of maintenance. Interesting you state that “Mitsubishi has been taken over by Nissan” - I believe they both jumped into bed with Renault? This was to form an Alliance to share the requirements to implement platform rationalisation, and break up markets geographically, reduce overheads and save all their butts.

Good review, Tom. To summarise it, the car has good interiors and exteriors with an underperforming engine, a stiffer suspension, poor ride quality, poor cvt and a lot of road noise. I might as well put in extra money and get Toyota Kluger Grande hybrid with beige interiors. Simply superb.

I'll be utterly brutal about this. The Outlander has the underpinnings of the upcoming Xtrail. I think realistically in 2022 if you're selling an n/a 2.5 four cyl. like this you're going to be pushing a hard sell... or maybe not... maybe consumers are dumb enough to accept this kind of lack of technology...

I must be too old to appreciate retro styling because to me the front end is ugly with too much chrome and it looks like the inside of a Armenian gift shop - that fact it’s a Nissan Xtrail with a different body means it has the industry flawed CVT that apparently Nissan/Renault has a huge global class action against it - it will also have the useless on-demand AWD system means means it’s too late when you need it unlike the superior Subaru AWD system -wouldn’t touch this car with a barge pole - RIP Mitsubishi- John in SA
