Once again. Nice video. As a Mitsubishi PHEV owner. I would class this as a good review. We have had ours for just over a year now. And everything you mentioned was just about spot on. Apart from that, the motor does do a direct drive to the front wheels, at speed on the motorway. When the battery is depleted or when in save mode. This is indicated by orange on any of the on-screen graphics. But great review anyway. By the way. The PHEV is our stop gap before we by our Tesla in 2018. :)

Umm, i was told there is no mechanical link between the engine and wheels and that the engine powers a generator that feed the front motor directly...????

It's 6 months later..but the PHEV has 3 modes of operation: EV, Serial Hybrid and Parallel Hybrid. In EV and Serial modes the car is driven by its motors. In parallel mode its driven by the engine via clutch directly. This mode only happens in the circumstances explained by Jason horsman.

You are correct this is a great car for the transition to full EV. I run 2 in my company for 2 years now and they are very good. I then went for a Tesla 70 D now and still have the 2 PHEV within the company. Good video James.

James and Kate the 70 is great and has the 75 bat upgrade, but not needed. Great video Kate about the front vents rubbing!. I have the same problem but not as loud as yours but it's still a problem. Hope the SC fixes it out like yours. Also liked you visit to Scotland was very good, and you will know now that we have 8 stalls located in Dundee, good for your next trip.

Great review, I'm really enjoying your videos. I love my Outlander PHEV, and it is a stepping stone, I have totally decided to trade our Deisel Focus in for a leaf as soon as we can. The only complaint I have with the Outlander is that there is no option to put it in EV only mode, the engine kicks in alot in the cold unless you turn off the heat completely, preheating helps though. PHEV's also get people into the habit of plugging in, and installing chargers which is also a good thing.

Yeah thats a good point, even in eco mode if you gave some throttle it was straight in. But it's half way there and maybe enough to convince some people.....

That's not correct. There is an EV button. However some models don't have it - mine for example - mine is a 2015. However when I drive in winter I put it in Eco mode and the ICE does _not_ kick in unless I were to floor it. In winter I still get 27 miles on pure electric. My commute is 6 miles each way, so I'm sorted. Plan was to get a Tesla, haven't got round to it yet..

Hi. There IS an EV only mode . It’s the large, rectangular button just below the auto gear lever. However, as you say, if the temperature is very cold in the mornings, the engine will start in normal petrol mode for a short while.

I wonder how well this would be suited to LPG-conversion or installing an aftermarket extra battery pack (on top of the OBD-plug-in-box to get some extra EV-mileage). Bear in mind it"s the only EV out there capable of towing a trailer (up to 1500 kg (3000+ pounds that is)). since it is 4 x 4 it is expected to do well in bad weather conditions provided you put on some grippy tyres (from a safety point of view I'm not very keen on eco-tyres because of reduced grip, not only because of potential traction problems but more importantly because of potential reduced braking performance). It would be interesting to do a movie about that this winter. Especially 4wd vehicles with regenerative braking on both axles + the traditional braking system have an enormous braking capability provided they can transmit that braking power to the road (i.e. sticky tyres).

Saving and waiting for a model three, but if that turns out to be too expensive I think we might go with this (the wife loves her asx and has already tested the PHEV) especially if the electric range is increased.we would compliment and the phev with an imported leaf, ( leaf are not sold by Nissan here in NZ - you have to buy an import) that would cover our day to day commutes and long distance trips :-). Great video BTW !

Good video James. Totally agree about diesels, new diesel cars shouldnt be allowed and old diesals should a scrap subsidy if you trade them for an ev or petrol phev/hybrid. Currently driving a diesel is like smoking down the pub used to be considered years ago. Everybody was encouraged to buy diesel but arent being encouraged to stop.
@Jamesandkate
@Jamesandkate 7 жыл бұрын
Spot on, Gordon Brown was the diesel advocate if I'm not mistaken. Trying to ween a planet of fossil fuel is hard, we've been addicted to iy for over 100 years now but it's happening :-)
@Jamesandkate
@Jamesandkate 7 жыл бұрын
mdad hdad Definitely, we need a diesel scrapage scheme to aid people away from them. Unfortunately dealers still market them as 'really clean', 'great for the environment' with absolutely no mention of carcinogenic particulates.

Ref Diesel vs petrol. Worth considering that CO2 emissions are lower from Diesel, so while Diesel is worse for the contemporary metropolitan residents, the higher CO2 output of petrol will cause a global and longer term penalty for future generations , especially people elsewhere like coastal areas and island nations. Also, consider the vapours of benzene etc, which are very hazardous in many ways, both now and long term.
@Stevedurham77
@Stevedurham77 7 жыл бұрын
Karman Line particulate 2.5 in Diesel can't be filtered by the human lung and is responsible for 100's of thousands of deaths. I agree petrol is poison as well so the sooner we leave fossil fuel behind the better.
@Jamesandkate
@Jamesandkate 7 жыл бұрын
Good point. I would say that we can naturally draw CO2 from the atmosphere but not at the rate we put it in. Which ever way we look at it, they both need to go.

Is the low down torque on these things quite impressive? There are quite a few round where I live and the owners often seem to treat them like racing cars, I think the off the line torque makes them feel fast although in my experience past 30 or 40 they're pretty much standard SUV as far as acceleration goes!
@Jamesandkate
@Jamesandkate 7 жыл бұрын
greenmoose7708 The motor torque is pretty substantial on these, off the line they're not slow, and like you said, it's becomes pretty standard after 45/50 😊👍🏻

I agree that petrol is much cleaner in terms of NOx emissions and visible clouds of smelly diesel fumes. However, it seems Direct Injection has been used in many petrol cars (since early 2010s) without the appropriate particulate filter, resulting in high levels of ultra fine particulate emissions. So newer GDI engines are many times worse for our health than the old TFI engine. And of course the manufacturers refuse to install the ~£100 filters that would reduce these particulates by x1000 until they are forced to do so by legislation. I think the consensus is that both petrol (GDI) and diesel ICEs now emit particulates at levels that are damaging to health. So by driving petrol you're really just eliminating NOx emissions thanks to the lower pressure/heat of combustion.
@Jamesandkate
@Jamesandkate 7 жыл бұрын
Yes I think the only advantage it has is that when cold it is still pretty near it full efficiency, were as a diesel is shocking.... We know that they both need to go, it's just trying to push them thats hard. Tesla are slowly doing this though :-)

Great information on the video, thanks. What are your thoughts on the Outlander PHEV for towing a caravan? Currently tow with Lexus 45h and it can be a tad sluggish up hills but improves when I switch from auto to manual. Thanks again really has sparked my interest.
@Jamesandkate
@Jamesandkate 7 жыл бұрын
Christine Knott Hi Christine. If I'm honest I wouldn't know accurately as I didn't tow during the review, however the outlander isn't short on power at all and surprised me from the beginning. I would add the with a caravan you'll certainly eat up the EV range as the drag will be so high but you have the ICE to back you up. That said, when you're not towing this is excellent, and really is a pleasure to drive. Hope this helps 😊👍🏻

Yes thanks - I can honestly say that having watched your review on here I have been to Mitsubishi today and driven one. Really lovely drive and fully experienced the EV in action. Clearly a car to get to know in order to get the best out of it, but so rewarding when you get the hang of it and see the car charging itself whilst moving! Checked out the towing and assured it will pull my caravan with ease. Still a tad concerned though after following up on another review, which stated towing up hill was a challenge for the PHEV, sounds like I could pull it up myself faster!!! Second concern is seating comfort, might need a second test drive and simply getting used to after my own VERY comfortable car. That said it's about weighing the +'s agains -'s and there are plenty +'s in the PHEV's favour!! You have really sparked my interest in this car so can I say a huge thanks for that, really pleased to have been introduced to it and it's now a serious contender on my list. If I do take the plunge on it, Mitsubishi have you to thank for the sale! If anyone has any feedback on towing or seat comfort on long drives would love to hear from you! Thanks!

I have just spoken to a friend who runs one of these as his daily driver (mk1) He does tow a trailer occasionally but not a caravan, however in terms of weight, it's garden slabs/block paving so still rather heavy. He advised that he has no issues at all with towing. Also, I can add from my own experiences and another friend who currently works for Mitsubishi as a Technician that the reliability is fantastic. They see these for routine servicing only with very few if any mechanical failures, opposed to other models. Thanks for your nice comments, glad we could help :-) James

James, really enjoy watching the video's so keep up the great work ;) My wife has the 2.2 7 seater Outlander (2016) and it is a great car, great quality and performance. We live in the Dublin mountains and so really need 4x4. I'd love to get an EV or PHEV but options are limited, I like the luxury of the BMW 330e and Audi Quattro's and I don't think the Mitsubishi is quite there yet. What AWD EV/PHEV's am I missing?

From talking to outlander phew driver from 2015 version , 27 miles on battery real world is what he got, better than diesel an petrol version but not an ev , don't believe it should be getting much tax incentive until the battery is much bigger and also tax incentives for business are already available ( muddy water) but as you said not every one can jump straight to ev , ps much for this high spec monster

We have had one from the second shipment. Very very happy. It is an entry level drug to the EV world. We have used it for the school run and locally always fully electric. This weekend in a longer run we use petrol as well. For the first time we used the 4wd lock on a rather icy hill where others had got stuck in the ice. The one problem for us is what next, the lease is nearly up. So far we have tested the Tesla's both x and s. X to big, s to big really and not loving the low driving position. Hyundai- still to do. BMW i3- nice but motorways on those skinny tires? Leaf- brill but depressingly ugly. Golf- rubbish range. ZOE- had reanult before not sure I trust their build quality. We need a genuine 150 range for regular motorway runs from Dorset to Surrey and we really want EV not hybrid.
@Jamesandkate
@Jamesandkate 7 жыл бұрын
Thats a conundrum... How long do you have..?? The new Zoe is out soon and Robert Lleweylen has a review out any time. I think in the real world this will achieve 150-180 but nowhere near the fabricated figures they suggest on the NEDC. Also the new Leaf is soon to be announced but who knows how long it will be until we see it....???? The I3 is an interesting one. I know a chap who has fitted spacers and bigger wheels and thinks the looses he has are nearly noticeable. He has the REX just incase but never uses it.

It's been delayed for the last 3 years or more. Mitsubishi were struggling I don't think they had the financial wherewithal for a US launch. It would sell like hotcakes in the land of the SUV/CUV, especially being 4X4. My personal theory is that they couldn't make as much money per unit in the US and focused on selling in Europe and Japan where the sales have been very good. Hopefully Nissan will do something with the platform here in the US.

There's definitely a gap in the current EV market for a large load carrying family EV at a reasonable price. We've got a brand new leaf the Mrs uses for the school run and work and I'd love to replace my diesel 10-yr old S-Max but the Teslas are too pricey and the Ioniq which I tested last week week and loved is just not quite big enough in the boot. If they do produce a larger battery Outlander, that may be an option unless the price kicks up too much.
@Jamesandkate
@Jamesandkate 7 жыл бұрын
geoffnotjeff Hi Geoff. It's certainly worth considering or driving if you can. With an increase in range to 100/150 they'd sell these like hot cakes I would think.

I don't need that jump, all the maintaining of an engine, plug in is in my opinion a waste of time . EV all the way , from a sports car owner. Tesla every time for me . I live in Australia, one guy said on a comment, how are you going to charge your your car? I suppose with those polluting solar panels, and I said yes with polluting solar panel's. Sorry we have Weirdo's in Australia, part of energy security , look it up on the internet, and I personally think it's government sponsored, a very strange country, considering how easy it is to generate solar power here.

I have to disagree. It depends on your requirements. Obviously you don't need to tow anything and can afford the huge premium for Tesla vehicles. As far as servicing costs are concerned I think you'd find Mitsubishi a lot cheaper than Tesla!
@Jamesandkate
@Jamesandkate 7 жыл бұрын
Mark Armitage Mitsubishi are in this case cheaper than Tesla for a service which I have to say is rather strange. However I get the bigger picture that servicing is expensive and dirty, and dealers sell you parts you don't need and call it "preventative maintenance" when the parts are still well within their operational life. I see it day it day out but recently had a family member the target of this the tune of over £1100. We spent £45, Kate chucked an exhaust silencer on it and it's since been mot'd and passed. This was 6 months ago. The more we can rid ourselves of these costs the better 😊👍🏻

Nice review - very balanced. I would love to have bought a Nissan Leaf but needed something which would tow a caravan a few times a year! The only full EV that can do that is the Tesla Model X but I don't have £90k at my disposal. So I bought one of these and frankly am very glad I did. I've had it for nearly a month and so far have used approximately 5 litres of petrol, so environmental damage is pretty low. I've not yet towed a caravan but am assured that it will have no difficulty but expect a massive hit on the fuel consumption though probably no worse than any other petrol car and we don't want to go down the diesel route do we?

Mark Armitage Understand that completely, 90K in some cases is a house and I don't know many people who have a spare one of those. This is an amazing car and as you've said really has its place. 😊👍🏻

James and Kate I'm fighting with them. Writing endless complaints. Vert little effect. I'm going to write official letter to customer protection organisation this summer if they won't fix it by then. Let's see how Nissan likes the idea of customer returning the vehicle due to one function not working reliably.

Kinda. They acknowledged that app is not good enough nor stable. So maybe... maybe some progress... when.. don't know.

Nice concept but the entertainment system looks pretty outdated compared to a Volvo or Tesla.
