I never paid any attention to this type of artistry, I'm now 55 lol and I am so in awe of Mix Master Mike. It really is amazing and I'm sorry I missed out knowing this so many years ago.

i was a young teen when this stuff was in the making. it was a crazy time. hiphop itself was blowing up and house music too. the rave scene here in cali did underground music right. i feel blessed but when i try to share with youth about how cool it was they dont want to hear it.

26 year old Canadian. my childhood was all skateboarding and kickin it with the older kids, that’s how I got into this. My homie next door threw on the beastie boys and I was infatuated with the beats more than the actual words. Wasn’t until a late teen when I realized it was mike pulling the strings making shit happen. Now everything is computerized or auto tuned. This is raw talent.

Holy shit, so this became 3 MCs and 1 DJ by Beastie Boys. Nice. Recognised the horn-stab straight away.

Just got me like that after finding this video!!! That sound!!!
@junglist822 жыл бұрын
The horn stab was used in Check it Out, not 3 MCs.
@quirkypurple2 жыл бұрын
@@junglist82 I don't know man this sounds like the actual record used for the video version of 3 MC's. It would make more sense as Mike joined the Beastie Boys for Hello Nasty. This was recorded some time not too long before Hello Nasty. He's using the same "drumming" technique as he does in 3 MCs...' The Check It Out stab sounds different to me. I could be wrong and I'd love to be corrected if you have some evidence clarifying 👍🙏
@junglist822 жыл бұрын
@@quirkypurple I forgot about the video version of 3 MCs, I thought you were talking about the album version. I think you're right, this is probably the record that was used in the video version. That horn stab is also used in Check it Out, it's just pitched up.
@quirkypurple2 жыл бұрын
@@junglist82 ah yes. I thought that might have happened. I should have mentioned the video version the first time. All good. Think you are right, the pitch is different 👍🙏

It's so much fun and great practice!! You'd have to rip it from KZfaq, there's 1 good sounding one. The track is called "MMM" from the Beastie Show Breaks record. That record is very rare. I'm one of the lucky few who has one in perfect condition 😊
@ButterInChicago7 жыл бұрын
My favorite routine of MMM ever. Love this combo so much--after first hearing him do this in Turntable T video clip (with ISP opening for Beastie Boys), I haven't been able to get this out of my head. Thank you so much for posting this.

Great explanation. Finding your way back home is always the key & it's crazy cause like he said you just know how to get back no matter where you are. 3 turns 10 turns 100 turns. Doesn't matter somehow a turntablist always finds his way back home. Brilliant way of explaining it Mike.. Thanks for sharing..

@dozer303 жыл бұрын
@@theStepFamm yes and yes. You could do this right now with one of these records. The most popular of these kinds of records are called “skip proof” or “skipless” scratch records which are designed to be played like a single instrument. You literally can just drop the tone arm needle anywhere on the record & be on beat. You can still find full vinyl copies online or WAV files & MP3’s of them in case you have Serato or Traktor DJ Software/Hardware.
