MIX YOUR VOCALS - How to use volume AUTOMATION (1 of 6)
If you want to mix your vocals like a pro, this one is for you. In this "MIX YOUR VOCALS" series, I will show you all the steps I take when mixing a vocal. This will be a 6 part video series and on this first video, I will talk to you about the importance of VOLUME AUTOMATION.
I use automation a lot in a mix and when it comes to vocals, I like to start my mix with some volume AUTOMATION to balance my vocal out before I reach my first compressor.
Hope you enjoy!

Hi Chris, thanks for the great vid! Two things to consider: First, when you cut parts and adapt the volume of one, the cuts have to be on zero-crossings, else you might get clicks at the cuts. Second, you can also use the draw-tool directly on the part and draw in new volume-curves! This has the advantage, the the waveform-disply in the part directly reflect the new, modified volume! best, Ralf
@mixdownonline

You're right about the clicks, in my experience, you might get clicks or not... 70% of the time I get no clicks between cuts for a 1-2 db volume change but yes, it's always good to crossfade events. I tried the Draw tool to do so in the past but it slowed me down so I don't use it much. You're right, the cool thing about this is the waveform display that reflects the volume changes. Thanks for your input Ralf!

Well done Chris in showing the different options here. Particularly like the recording of the Vocal Rider trick. It seems to me the vocal track mixing begins before this step though. The first step is selecting a take or combining parts from multiple takes. This might make a cool video to show people about using Track Lanes, the Comp Tool, Clean up Lanes and Track Versions, etc to piece together a vocal track from multiple takes. For this step of gross normalization of the volume, I personally prefer modifying the volume of the track rather than automation, primarily because it is always visible on the track view and easily adjustable on the display. This can also be helpful if you decide to later replace a section from a different take, stretch it or otherwise modify it as the volume is portable with that particular event.

Thanks, John... On my end, mixing doesn't include editing, pitch correction and comping the vocals to choose the good parts. That's mainly because my mixing fees simply don't include editing. If a client wants me to edit his vocals, that will be an hourly fee opposed to a flat fee for mixing ;-) I always keep that perspective in mind. But a video on editing vocals is a very good idea John :-)

Makes perfect sense that it be considered part of the "tracking" versus "mixing" from a workflow perspective. Certainly from traditional or professional perspective. When you write the songs, play most of the instruments, sing, record, mix and master, like an ever growing number of amateur/semi-pros including myself, the distinction isn't as readily apparent. This is both problematic and beneficial. Problematic in the potential for endless rounds of revisions and restarts late in the process that mean never releasing anything. Beneficial in the opportunity to make corrections and learn from mistakes made earlier in the process and know why professionals are so worth paying. Anyway, thanks for all the great videos, you've helped me tremendously. Cheers.

Super excited about this series. I had NO idea that this was required/suggested as I thought that having a little bit of compression inserterted on vocal track (or even at input level) would be enough to even things out sufficiently before mixing. Dam, I have lots to learn!
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 5 жыл бұрын
I will not say "required". That all depends on how dynamic your vocals are. If you're working with a steady/not to dynamic vocal take, you won't need to do a lot of volume automation if not none. But most of the time, I do a minimum of work before compression :-)

I can't imagine that a software can handle the gain you want to have on vocals. On house or techno or so, yes, but on "real" music, never ever. You must do it by hand and ear.

I guess the difference between gain automation and clip-splice-gain-reduction, the second might introduce clicks or pops if not crossfaded correctly, where the prior method won't. Thanks. Waiting for the next episode.

Chris, I spend a lot of time before starting a mix creating automation points for every event. Then I can easily adjust each event while in a mix workflow without having to create points each time. Is there a way to select a bunch of events and have the automation nodes created? Or even to select a range and have the automation nodes created WITHOUT having to adjust the automation up or down? I dont want to have to move each range up or down to create the nodes, I just want them created so I can grab the handle and adjust the event. Any ideas on this?

Does Waves do this automatically? I'm very confused, I've been doing this anyway (lowering/raising volume on selected sections - im a beginner btw) but have no idea what the pregain settings mean, or why you had select something from the drop down menu in order to do this?

Hard to tell...It can be a lot of things... can be a bad hard drive, a high buffer that could give problems depending on your Sound interface. (that happened to me before) or even a plugin can be the cause of this.

Yeah, automation has changed in 9.5... You can use the Line Tool to do a similar move. just draw a straight line in the automation lane at the level you want to bring your gain. Hope that helps!

Chris Selim - Mixdown Online Yes, i know but clip gain is a bit like warping in another direction like a Compressor does 2 dynamics. Maybe I'm wrong but U influence the Bitrate with the Headroom increase or decrease
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 5 жыл бұрын
Clip gain is simply volume automation pre-insert and pre-fader, that simple. You won't influence the bitrate... at 24bit you have plenty of headroom to work your mix, whether you do automation pre or post-insert. No artifacts will be created with gain changes... Warping manipulates audio in time which is completely different than clip gain. Hope that helps :-)
@kevinrochestermn
@kevinrochestermn 5 жыл бұрын
Instead of this approach why not put two compressors as the first thing in your chain. I can appreciate automation more surgical than a compressor. Just another approach to consider.
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 5 жыл бұрын
Good question... Because I love compression on a vocal and I want everything to sound smooth and natural when using compression afterward. But if I work with a not to dynamic vocal take, I skip that part. Don't get me wrong, this is not to replace a compressor. I still like to use 2 compressors on vocals regardless if I volume automate or not. But when I do control the dynamics a bit I can use compression for more than only dynamic control but to tone shape as well. You'll see in my compression video (video#3) where I will show an example using one comp, 2 comps and also parallel comp. But again, that only the way I work and in mixing it's not always "one size fits all" :-)
