MIX 101: How To Use a Fairchild Compressor | Mix Better Now
Here's a brand new installment in the Mix 101 series where I break down the meat and potatoes of how to use a Fairchild 670 and 660. This wonderful Vari-Mu compressor from the 1950's sounds amazing on everything from drums to vocals to bass. This is considered to be 1 of the Holy Trinity of Compressors with the 1176 and the LA-2A making up the other two thirds. I hope you enjoy this and if you have any questions, please leave a comment. This is a good overview of UA's emulations of the legendary Fairchild compressors. Just a couple comments: 1. LAT/VERT is essentially Mid/Side, in that order. Thus in LAT/VERT mode, the Mid signal is routed through the upper portion and Side goes through the lower. LAT=Mid, VERT=Side. I think Pete misspoke and got it backward. (These terms come from how records are cut with a lathe - mono waveforms are represented by Lateral stylus movements, thus the squiggles in the grooves, and stereo info is recorded via Vertical movement of the stylus.) 2. The 660 is not just a mono version of the 670 - there are differences in threshold and gain behaviors, input range, distortion characteristics, etc. I do agree with Pete's favorite uses of the two models: 670 on drums, 660 on bass and vocals. More detailed info about each of these plugins can be found in the UAD manual. Anyway, thanks for the vid and the excellent channel! One of the best mixing resources out there.

Man these videos are invaluable!! Thanks Pete. I have the free Legacy Fairchild you get with the Apollo and I was baffled until now. I'm relatively new to the sound engineering side of music and the Apollo and related plugins is a big step up in required knowledge and sound production responsibility and this series is really putting all the basics in place for me to go to town on a track and find what I like rather than spend tons of time figuring out how things work. The one thing you missed on these was the DC Threshold knob. Just wondering what that did? Thanks man

Hey thanks. I was already familiar with how to use this plugin but did learn something new! That being the release times of the "Time Constant" knob. I assumed that #6 would have the slowest release of all. Not true! However there is one control you didn't touch on that I'm a little hazy on what it does. That being the "DC thres" control. I assume that means DC threshold? I have played around with it not knowing exactly what it (or I) was doing but noticed the more I turned it counterclockwise the less compression seemed to be happening. Also noticed there's four little icons that appear to depict different levels of bass rolloff. Probably I should just look it up in the manual!

Youve got great energy, excellent no-bs delivery, and great presentation skills. Unfortunately, the fairchild means buying hardware to run the plugin so I'll probably roll with the Waves version but I'm curious if you've compared them at all. Subscribed!

The analog thing also has a tiny ratio knob on the back. And another weird thing with it, is that the knee size changes both according to the ratio and threshold, which is why there is an input knob. So you kinda have to jump back and forth between the buttons to fine tune the compressor. The plugin didn't add the ratio knob to make it easier to control. And the easy to controll reason is also why the ratio knob is on the back instead of on the front. Back in the 50s they also thought that they weren't going to change the ratio much

Fairchild 670 has an internal operating level of -8dBS. Most UAD plugins are typically -18 dBFS.

This was a cool video ! I would have loved a comparison with and w/o the compressor but that wasn't the main goal of the video so that's ok. Really liked the input trick since I didn't know about that. I tried it on the waves version on an already mastered track and didn't see much of a difference so I'll have to try it again. Maybe the waves version just doesn't do it as much.

Glad you liked the vid! :-) I think you'd notice the compressor more on a track with less processing on it IMO. But on the flipside the Waves Puigchild is far more transparent than the UAD Fairchilds. The UAD ones really do sound close. BUT, that in no means the Waves isn't good. I always say use what you have and never let gear stop anyone from making great music! :-)

Mix Better Now That's not a problem to me. I was just curious because it was so apparent here. But the waves of definitely add color to the sound when compressing. I had to get rid of it on the mix buss a few time because I didn't like how it was affecting my kicks haha.

Just a note for any Slate people out there. If you have the bundle, the "FG-Mu" on the Virtual Buss Compressors is their emulation of the 670. I was curious if it was in there so I looked it up. Sorry If you said this in the video and I missed it!

No worries, John! Ha, Steven is gonna kill me for saying this if he sees this but I don't think the FG-Mu sounds like a Fairchild at all. Especially because of that big 2K bump it has. BUT, it is very very similar to the Fairchild in that it works like a classic Vari-Mu comp. Doesn't mean it's bad, though.... Whats great about the FG-Mu is you can actually custom dial in your attack and release times :-)

Please note that real life Fairchild 660 is not 1/2 of the 670! The circuit/power supply is different .Great, real life examples are MERCURY 66 , ANALOGUE TUBE AT-1 ,EAR 660...... Unless U are Ringo Starr, 670 sounds good with compression under 3 dB. The 660 can be pushed harder --ala 6 db.

I have experienced that with Slate Digital VMR. Everything else on the U.I. (switches, knobs, buttons) works but the meters won't move at all. Try saving your project and reopening it.

Also, if your input signal isn't reaching the threshold level, the compressor won't be triggered no matter how high your ratio is. Try lowering your threshold level.
