I'm also careful if I have frequencies that are overlapping. Solo, the tracks can sound ok, but together they can add up certain frequencies. So the next step I do is side chain compression and EQ, then I analyze the whole thing on 2bus and I set it up to hit maximum -6.0dB. From there I can push it late on if I want.

I've been a professional musician for over 47 years, and a studio owner for 20+ years. Although certified by Pro Tools, I've had no formal training. Just trial and error. This is by far "the BEST" instruction I've ever seen or heard regarding balancing a mix. Without a good/proper balance, a mix engineer will surely be fighting himself throughout the entire mixing process to get the tracks to to "play well" with each other.

Great knowledge here. One thing: For people brand new to mixing, mixing into compression isn’t probably the best way to start. You need to get a good understanding of both compression *and* gain staging before you can effectively mix into mixbus comp… I always recommend for folks new to mixing, first learn to mix without anything on the mixbus. Then move on to mixing into compression once they understand the basics. Some hardcore old school engineers claim you should never mix into compression, but i’m not one of them. It can he helpful with rock mixes, EDM or other more full/aggressive styles. But you need to know what you’re doing first, to get good results.

Hey Gain Staging is not a trick but a necessity. But as I stated in the comments section of another video: "Certain Plugins especially analog emulations Plugins need to see a certain amount of level to hit their sweet spot as well, so to just use just the input trim only of a plugin for gain staging the rough mix in my opinion is ill advised." There is a reason for Clip Gain and Trim/Gain Plugins. There's Gain Staging within and between plugins that have to be considered.

If you think there is any difference between using the input gain of any plugin vs using a trim before them, rethink. This is digital. Also, sweet spot? This is exactly how to hit "the sweet spot", given the fact that 99% of the time the "sweet spot" on plugins is absolute BS. This is not analog.

Well if the emulation of analog gear doesn't have the sweet spot...why even make them or buy them. em·u·la·tion /ˌemyəˈlāSH(ə)n/ Learn to pronounce noun effort to match or surpass a person or achievement, typically by imitation. "their success is inspiring emulation from others" COMPUTING reproduction of the function or action of a different computer, software system, etc. "software emulation of complete systems"

Just wanted to randomly come by and say thanks again, Ive only just started doing automation in mixes. Thanks to you. Mixing this last tune has been much easier. Amazing. Today I went to YT to find answers to questions like this, and here they are. The most important information that will help me a lot in the future is that when we adjust the instrument levels at the very beginning of mixing, it should actually stay that way, in terms of level-matching after eq and compression. By the way, even if I have been using the SSL native channel strip for a long time, I would like to hear your opinion about that plugin, especially the native SSL Bus comp. 2. I hope you will see this comment and make a review ... Kind regards Dave !!!
