Losing the dry-wet relationship in the manner shown here IS an important thing to be aware of. But most of us probably are not, unless we-ve experienced strange things happening when moving the group fader, investigated it and eventually figured out why. I think there ought to be a smart feature in Cubase to sense and automatically adjust this relationship when moving a group fader. The reason for having e.g. a reverb on an effect bus is so that you can use it for many tracks wit the send feature. Routing the reverb bus to the group means you can't use that reverb for other stuff than the tracks routed to that bus. It's nothing wrong of course to have a dedicated reverb bus in this manner, as long as you don't forget and accidentally start using it for other tracks. If you only want reverb on the snare in a situation like this, perhaps it's better to put it as an insert on the snare track, but if you want reverb in different amounts on several of the drum tracks the previously mentioned way is better.

This video has saved me hours of mistakes. I hardly move my group channel fader so that’s why I haven’t noticed this before. I will now have to change the way I work as I like to set up only a few effect channels, then use those as send in all my instruments. Thanks again I have learnt so much from you

Hi Chris, thanks for this video, I appreciate it. I have a suggestion: This video is meant for people that are learning production, mixing and Cubase. You are doing things in Cubase that I don't know how to do, it would help tremendously if you could just tell (or show on screen, like f.i.: shift+alt+ ...) how to do it (which shortcuts). F.i. @5:13 you start to couple two tracks together, but I don't know how you did this. This way we don't just learn about routing but also about Cubase and such. Thanks!

Chris, First off. Thank you for taking the time to make these tutorials! They have really helped me! I know this video is old but I am always confused with the mix bus vs. Stereo outs. In the video on mixing with busses you mention the group drums channel and the effect channel; both going out to the stereo outs for your session. Is that the mix bus or the actual stereo outs (generic routing point for tracks) I'm trying to make a template but I'm not sure where the group channels get routed to. help!

I think its important to remember to keep the aux buss effect at 100% wet and the source track send kept at zero (Center). The aux effect buss fader should control the amount of reverb + or -. The source track fader and its send control is going to alter the gain and the mix. So it will be necessary to have several aux busses for individual elements that you want to treat with the same reverb but with different amounts. One aux with one reverb might be useful if you want to send multiple elements to one reverb with its desired set of parameters. Multi-voices from a kit cannot have diffetent reverb depths and m.sec parameters from only one designated reverb aux track. You need a seperate aux effect fader to control the amount of effect Just as you do with paralell compression on a kit which affects one elememt or the whole kit as you dial it in. The gain reduction or increase is the problem on the source track faders and sends!! Your comments please Chris!

When I use a Rear Bus channel I send my individual FX channel outputs into a FX Group Bus as I didn't want to introduce extra reverb and FX into the Rear Bus (especially if compressing the Rear Bus signal), as I thought that one of the aims of the Rear Bus technique was to add an extra layer of the (clean) solid foundation of the non-drum bus mix. I find by having a FX Group Bus that I have more control over what levels of FX & Reverb I am sending into my Mix-bus channel. I say this as I noticed you had a Rear Bus in your mix setup (and with two sends from the Instrument and Vocal buses?).

Maybe you can also shine a light on the different possibilities of output routing of fx tracks. For instance; do you send the output of a snare reverb to the stereo out or is it preferable to send it to the drummix bus. 🤔 Hope to hear from you 👍🏻😀

Q: if you need to adjust the level of one drum, can you simply adjust the reverb send to mainatin the direct-effect balance?
@darrenbrook4641
@darrenbrook4641 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, great video. The instrument tracks could be anything, guitars, pianos, individual drum tracks. Something I question is if I have, for example, three instrument tracks (audio or VSTi) that all belong to a logical group, say “Synths”, then I might create a group track and then route all three to that track. Now, let’s say I have a common reverb on an fx track that I am using to allow the instruments to share the same reverb space. So I’ll send from each instrument track (post-fader) to the fx track. Each of the instrument tracks will have different fader levels, and I might have lower send levels on one or more of the instruments. So this way, if the fader is moved, the relationship between that and the send is maintained. But now on the Synths group track, I want to apply some balance to the group. So I might apply very light compression or dynamic eq. This then changes the tonal balance but it might also increase or decrease the volume. This is the problem, as the changes are not reflected in the reverb. That is, the sounds being processed via the reverb sends are now not sonically the same as the changed dry sound on the Synth group track. I can’t use a send on the synth group track, as each instrument requires a different send level. And I don’t want to have lots of extra instances of the same reverb plug-in - especially when it’s supposed to be a common space. I can’t take the reverb and route it into the synth group track, as that reverb is also used for other instruments. I also don’t necessarily want to have the reverb also going into the compressor on that group channel. So what is the correct way to deal with this?

Thank you Chris for the video. I use subgroups and "Q-Link" when making such adjustments in Cubase. What is the advantage of adding a VCA fader channel when you can "option click" those specific mixing board channels and "Quick Link" them in Cubase? Thanks again, Steve
@theparkerilla7292

VCA faders are useful if you want to automate them. It’s easier to write and modify automation data one one track than on multiple
@SteveCarr-AB
@SteveCarr-AB 4 жыл бұрын
@@Am6-9 Thank you - I know that Cubase VCA faders can be automated and understand what that allows. I thought that maybe VCA faders had some other type of advantage. I guess such mix options come down to an engineer's choice of workflow depending on the circumstances. In my situation, unless a client asks for it, I don't automate things until after the mix has settled in - i.e. the complex routing and level relationships like the snare drum's relative reverb level have stood the test of time of multiple tracking sessions which included numerous mix adjustments. By that point in a project, if any such mix "tweak" is needed, I just Q-Link the channels - or even simpler: adjust the snare reverb send by the same relative amount that the drum subgroup was adjusted. That only requires two mouse click and drags. That is also a better way to do things for me because I often send other instruments and vocals to the short and long reverb plugins that I also use for the snare. On the other hand, using a VCA as described in the video (snare-reverb levels) requires having a dedicated reverb, setting up the VCA group, opening the VCA automation lane, inserting the automation points, lassoing them and then adjusting them. If a snare-reverb level needs to be automated multiple times during a mix, I believe that simply automating the reverb send level on the snare track would be the best option. As the saying goes: "All roads lead to Rome" (some just take longer or have more bumps in them depending on your situation : - )

Kind of confused on the last part. So if you ever want to change the balance you will only change the dry kick & snare fader and every send/bus post fader will remain in tact? Am I missing something? My mixing has become halted due to this. When I get a good balance with the original channels I send every element into a respective bus. I further process these busses and am left with a loud track. My first instinct was to mix the 5 busses, but every time I touch them I feel the balance is thrown off. Should I be going back to the original channels and can I keep the bus fx I placed ?

This is in general a good thing. But sometimes I will create a feedback loop for some reasons. E.g. To control the feedback for a delay the old way, with the AUX like on an analog desk ore to use Vance Powells Delay Trick he was showing on PureMix last Week. Is there a setting ore Trick that I don´t find to avoid the “feedback guard” in some situations? And I´m totally aware what I will do und know the “danger” I´m way over 21 😉 Thanks, Th_H
