Mixed Media Jewelry Workshop with Special Effects Paint
Today I am going to share some technique I learned playing around with Pebeo Prisme Fantasy Paint. It is an alkyd based paint that leaves a very glossy honeycomb or hammered effect when dry. We will use inexpensive items to make our jewelry.
Note, I found good prices on everything you need at Blitzy and linked them up below. These are affiliate links which means I earn a small percentage of the sale but it doesn't cost you anything extra:) Thanks for your support!
I bought this set of 12 Pebeo Prisme Fantasy paints on clearance for $14 (normally $39!) so if you can I recommend using a coupon at a big box store or shopping around online for a good deal. Since I am doing small jewelry pieces I preferred to get the variety of small bottles to fewer large bottles but you can decided based on your needs. I did find a couple deals on the sets at Blitsy:
Prisme Fantasy: (honeycomb finish) shrsl.com/?ey5g
Moon Fantasy (hammered finish) shrsl.com/?ey5j
*Blitsy aslo carrys the large bottles but I recommend starting with the smaller bottles to see if you like it because the big bottles, althoug on sale, are a larger investment!
Other Supplies:
bottle caps you can get flattened or regular bottlecaps in lots of sizes and colors at Blitsy: shrsl.com/?ey5q
Cabochons/frames/ trays (you can get these at a craft/jewelry supply store, mine were 25 cents each from a stamp show) I have purchased inexpensive tray charms from Mod-Podge too shrsl.com/?ey5l
Chain shrsl.com/?ey5r
Beads shrsl.com/?ey5s
Bails (or wire for making our bottlecap charms into pendants) shrsl.com/?ey5o
Metal filigree or charms such as gears
Jump rings/wire shrsl.com/?ey5t
Jewelry tools such as pliers shrsl.com/?ey5u
Acrylic blanks or other sturdy substrates for metal collage pieces.
Glue: E600, Goop or liquid welder for glass or metal, Beacon 3-in-1 for plastic
Anything you darn well want can be used!
You might also want some oil or alkyd paints to use with the Prisme Fantasy paints because they do not have mica in them and provide a nice contrast!
Time! The Prisme Fantasy paints take 72 hours to cure, handling them too soon will result in fingerprints or dents in the paint surface (don't ask me how I know!)

This is really fun paint! I made a bunch of jewelry by punching out shapes and then embossing metal tape and dropping the paint on it or just dropping it in cabachons like you did and then topping off with resin! Thanks for all of your experimenting!

I saw the same tutorials that you spoke about prior to yours and I my mouth just dropped open when I saw them using an entire bottle on one of those board canvases. I was like, "What are you doing?!" So I do agree that was like, "wow,." The paint is expensive. I happened to get it at Michaels on clearance, but it was still a bit pricey to just dump it on a tiny canvas. I really enjoyed watching what you did with the paint.

I've had these paints for quite some time now and a few things I have found are: 1. I started with the same dripping the paint from a toothpick technique like u did. however u can guarantee the paint will either drip where u don't want or u have to wiggle to get it off and flick it everywhere. I bought the pebeo pipettes and assigned one for each colour. to clean them up I have a bowl of soapy water waiting and as soon as I'm finished let them soak. there will be some staining or teeny bits that u can't get out, but u have ALOT more control. 2. I tried the canvas technique along with the relief outliner.....wow...I used sooooo much paint. I then started experimenting and I've found that a slick surface uses a lot less paint. I try to treat everything I'm using these paints on with a thin layer of resin first, obviously this adds extra drying time to a project, but i now use at least 40% less paint each time so it's worth the wait. 3. Finally, I know it's common sense to use this paint in a well-ventilated area.....I live in North East England....the weather is awful most of the time...so going outside or opening windows/doors wide can sometimes pose a problem. I've invested in some disposable dust masks, i will use one of these, then open the windows as wide as the weather permits and also have a fan going to help circulate fresh air. 4. I have a bowl of disposable nitrile gloves, I know these can sometimes be a nuisance, but ive found if u buy a size slightly smaller than u need, they have a better tension on your skin and aren't so cumbersome. This was a big lesson learned as the first time I used this paint I spilled a lot of it on my hands and had a really bad reaction, my skin felt like I had bad sunburn and then went dry and rough after a few days and then cracked and split, especially around my cuticles. I know some of these may be obvious, but they are just little things I wish I knew when I used them for the first time, and hopefully they'll be helpful to someone else. Emma xxx

I just back from Art of the Carolinas and one of the vender booths was Pebeo paints, I saw all kinds of great techniques. One of the demonstrators is in the process of writing a book on these pains. One thing you can do is use them on acrylic paintings, just adding touches of it here and there. It was really cool. The Vitril is a transparent paint, the ceramic is opaque there is also moon and it has a bit of a different effect than the president. I love the paints I use it mainly on pottery jewelry pieces I've made. Prices there were great on their products.

I am so delighted to find this in your list of videos. I don't usually watch the jewelry type videos because I don't make it. However, I have been looking for the Pebeo acrylics in Michaels and all I could find were these intro kits and the 'vitriol' ..yeah, don't think that's the right name, but you know what I'm referring to. I could not really tell what they were supposed to accomplish. This is such a fantastic effect. My favorite is the plexiglass marbled effect...stunning! I'd love to see what you do with the mixed media/gears piece also when it has all finally set up and you do made wind chimes (or something) from them :)

Gosh Lindsey, I wish I'd known you had a tutorial for these paints because I've had my multimedia set from HL I got clearance for like $14 & I've set them aside till now! Consider possibly changing your title on this to begin with Pebeo effects paints because I skipped past it intially and watched other demos/tuts. So yea the tutorials I've watched were also of people pouring out paint and I was like 😧😱 But then I found a couple of really nifty ways to use it for effects in small quantities (such as just the petals of a flower or the moon and stars in on a mixed media canvas work Of art)because really IMO, that's where less is more, you want to accent your multimedia art with it rather than the effects Paint itself being the art. So I'm with you there. I also purchased a tube of the black relief because I thought it'd be cool to use it on a piece of glass or canvas board to separate the sections to put the paint in. My kit was the multimedia one and included all three types plus the lightening stuff and I bought a container of the glitter effects paint also to add to it. I should've known you'd have me covered as always 😍 Thanks for all you do!

hmm, I am not sure about dipping as the paint is quite runny, if you do I suggest suspending it over the pot of paint to catch drips. Maybe is you dipped it a few times and let dry between to get the coverage you want.

Dear Lindsay, I have some of these paints that has gotten thick and I have used different medium to thin it but didn't work. How do you thin this. I hate to through away such a expensive paint while still lot left in the bottle. Thanks

Gosh, I don't know, did you try mineral spirits as they are alkyd based? You need a solvent not a medium I think:)

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Pebeo makes a thinner to use specifically with their paints. I'm not sure exactly what it is. It's probably the same as any other thinner you can buy for oil based paints. :-)

Hello Everyone I have a question. I want to make a certain size pendant. Can i use a outliner to create what i want. Then add the color to it let it dry. But would it be too stuck to what you did it on to pick it up please let me know
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 6 жыл бұрын
If you work on silicone you should be fine. Just let the outliner dry well. I don't know how rugged it will be tho.

Excellent demonstration, Lindsay. Confused - are these water based or enamel (oil)? I'm assuming there's a long drying time? Ya got me inspired to go buy/try some! btw, the Blitzy page is non-existent. Thanks for sharing.

Michaels should have them. Also there is a hardware store brand called hammerite but they come in quarts and gallons so it might be a bit too much unless you are making a ton of Christmas ornaments LOL!

Lindsey...question. Im going to start working on my daughters wedding gift. Her colors are plum and gray ( not sure if thats needed) Im going to try my hand in a photo book. I've been to Hobby Lobby (closest place to me. Can't go far or do much walking bc of a major back surgery) to find a nice embellishment for the spine of the book. Could you give me some ideas or websites to go look. I would truly appreciate your help. It has to be a reasonable price to honey. Thank you for your time. Happy Holidays and Happy Crafting. p.s. im new to the amazing world of crafting. Been looking at KZfaq videos and came across you. I love love love what you have shown the viewer's here.

No matter how long it takes to make art and put intent into your work - it is still art and doesnt make it any lesser of an effort. It takes you just the same amount of time to put paint into a bezel- so using these paints makes you less of an artist ? Just some perspective for ya.

While I understand that you are super frugal- it is your name after all- but this is a paint that looks so much better on bigger surfaces. This paint needs a larger surface area to actually be able to really interact and repel in organic shapes. The smaller projects you did don't allow the paint the chance to show how it can morph and interact with the other colors or products. Instead you ended up with a lot of one color over another or a lot of circular shapes and while they are petty they don't really give the paint the chance to show what it can do and they don't give it much room to form the honeycomb and crackle effects that are really what make them so special . Your acrylic pieces are the best examples because they have more surface area-I loved the marble on the clear acrylic.. I did watch a few videos where people poured and yes it costs some dollars to play like that but the results are beyond spectacular and to me worth it. It is artwork that you can hang on your wall and enjoy everyday. The completed pieces you made are pretty but the paint itself isn't as showy and pretty as it would be on a bigger piece. I do however love using the paint to fill in the little areas on the filigree. That is an excellent use of this product.

Don't know how much that paint costs but you can do the exact same thing with cheap craft acrylic paint doing a dirty pour on a silicone baking sheet or the white paper that you buy at the market to put in a baking pan. It is called a "skin" and you can find tons of examples on youtube. You would end up with a whole sheet of skin that you could cut to size. If you want cells, add some silicone from the 99 cent store. You would have to gently remove the silicone after it dries using acetone, soap and water or alcohol on a qtip. Be careful if you use alcohol because it dissolves acrylic paint.
