This in-depth tutorial was originally filmed for my Art Process Club. I'm closing the art club on 19th February 2021, so I've decided to make some of the videos available for everyone to enjoy.
For this piece, I layered Caran d'Ache Luminance, Faber-Castell Polychromos, Derwent Drawing pencils, Holbein Acryla Gouache paint, Posca paint pens, a Faber-Castell Pitt Artist brush pen and a Neocolor wax pastel to create vibrant colour, texture and detail within the landscape. I hope that you'll enjoy this in-depth look at my process!

So beautiful. Thank you! I love your colors and the overall contrast in both color and values. So cool to watch you layer pencils to create gradations in both tone and color. I'm glad I discovered your channel. I'm sure the video, which looks great, still does not do justice to the vibrance of the actual print itself. I'm curious if you have you ever worked with Lyra Rembrandt color pencils? I've read that they have more oil than wax and blend well. I'd love to see you draw with them one day. Although I see you already have your own favorite tools.

It's really lovely to se the art coming onto being,and to hear your thoughts as you work,your videos really inspire me to experiment more with mixed media in my own work and in my sketchbooks. My Tinted Black Gansai paints arrived along with the Derwent tinted water soluable charcol pencils too and I love working with them already on regular paper and toned papers,and metallics also look amazing layerd on top of them.Thank you for reccommending them,I also got some Posca pens to try after seeing you use them to such great effect in your work. The colours you put together in this piece are really stunning and the finished piece has the look of an engraving.I could imagine your art making amazing engravings or maybe screen prints.Your videos show just how drawing is such a creatively engaging thing to do.

Thank you for this tutorial Natasha! I love my luminance pencils 😊 I want to experiment with different mark making and vary the amount of pressure I use. Currently I draw with a lot of pressure to create block colours and I love how bold and vibrant the pencils are, but I think it would be more interesting if I included some more softer marks too.
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Emma! One of the things that helped me to fall in love with coloured pencils last year was the realisation that I could use them in so many different ways. Layering, mixed media, and also using them in a softer way to make interesting textures and marks. They're so much fun to work with!

I just loved watching your second art class! I finished the first one earlier today and this one was so lovely! I really enjoy seeing inside your art making process. It gives me some ideas for My art. I have to deal with being chronically ill and making art can be difficult. I have trouble because Mom has to help me make the art, kind of like a co Collaborator. She has to get all my supplies together and set it up for me, then I make it. Another artist Linda Marcille talked about making an art nest she called it, for when you're not feeling well and keeping all your supplies together in a kind of diaper bag. A very good idea! But my art nest is too heavy for Mom to carry! Oh well, live and learn. I'll just have to let Mom get everything she can. I've had a hard time coming to terms with being ill. I'm no longer independent, I rely on others for everything now, and I'm like a little baby. I can't get up and walk anymore and I hated that. I have to do everything when others want to do it, not when I want to. Ah, life throws you curveballs sometimes...Anyway dear be well! Take care.

Gorgeous work! I think I’ll have to try some of the hot pressed paper for color pencil too. I followed along and made my own little scene (so fun!!) but it was a lot harder than it looks to get deep dark areas of pencil like you do. Might be partly because I’m using a paper with more texture maybe? Anyway, thank you for the “class”!!

I love the way you use coloured pencils. And you've inspired me not to be afraid of allowing the white of the paper to glisten through. My cursory observation is that a lot of cp artist's on yt seek opacity, hence the use of solvents and burnishing. I notice you don't do an initial sketch in graphite, how do you correct cp mistakes?
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think it really adds a lightness and texture when you allow the paper to show through. I use a very pale coloured pencil to very loosely draw the initial sketch. Any minor mistakes/alterations are covered when I add the layers, but I do have a very good eraser that can correct some mistakes; the Koh-I-Noor 'Magic' eraser.

i love the way this looks when done! A question about the layering of mixed media - I have read that its not a good idea to put acrylic or watercolor/gouache on top of oil (lean over fat principle) because over time as everything dries at different speeds, it can cause problems. Since posca pens are acrylic and gouache is waterbased and the color pencils are oil or wax based, I am wondering if this will be an issue here as well. Pencils are a dry medium so maybe not. Do you have any old art works (at least 5 or 10 years) where you have layered posca or other waterbased paint over oil/wax based pencils? I am curious to know if they are holding up all right or not. I would love to try this but am worried it will fall apart over time. Thanks
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. I've only recently started layering mixed media like this, so I don't have any older works created in this way. I would think that it would be fine because the pencils are a dry medium, as you say.

a question; although I understand the interpretive aspect of your markings, I wonder about the rust coloured markings in the hills, if you were intending their constant paired design is to signify leaves, trees, or something winged. I find it distracts me and causes the question.
