I've never painted before in my life, and I was scared to start...until I realized that the outcome just doesn't matter. So many people fail to start because our tendency is to think we'll be bad at it. I'm embracing the process. I had to document it, and I really hope you like this honest look of someone doing something totally new for the first time.
To purchase my first mixed media piece, you can contact the JoAnne Artman Gallery www.joanneartmangallery.com This is an original painting.

Omfg YOU are inspiring the crap out of me!!! It's so true that we tell ourselves "oh I'm not good at ___ because ____" and then we CONFIRM that to ourselves by seeing "professionals" do it by the book, when in reality, 'the book' is what's actually keeping us from boldly creating what is in our hearts!! I cannot tell you how many times I've wanted to try something new, looked up the most complicated techniques, and then stopped trying because I wasn't creating the way someone else was. UGH!!! I am honestly so so SO glad to have found your little ray of creative sunshine because it's so easy to tell yourself you're not good at something. It's a nonsense story we tell ourselves and the only way to defeat the narrative is to follow your intuition and create from your heart!! Not a stupid book. I should know better, I am self taught designer so I don't know why I allowed 'the rules' to intimidate my creative gifts!! Seriously, thank you. This is so valuable to me. ❤️ (I'm only 4 minutes in so I've yet to see how this turns out but I have a feeling it's gonna be great!)

I’ve had the thought in my head for months, and I’m on KZfaq searching inspiration and I end up finding you. Literally just left the art supply store and I asked myself what the heck am I trying to do. After seeing this video you have literally displayed everything that I’ve had in my head. I’m going to paint on my street photography prints . Thank you for the extra boost of confidence

Try mixing the oil paint with cold wax (1/2- 1/2 ratio). You'll have so much fun playing with it and you will love the result.

11:13 "The destructive part about that way of thinking is that *there are so many potentially incredible and meaningful and world changing artists out there that we may never ever get to see* because of the fear of creating something 'bad'." I actually had to write this down to remind myself that this fear-based thinking, is A LIAR!! Thank you for inspiring me today. I very much needed this reminder. Also--following your creative intuition clearly worked, because I absolutely love the way it turned out. 🙌

I have to say I meet a Photographer who shot in black and white then handpainted with oils to colorize all or parts of her photographs. Mix media is always unique I have seen some from awesome to weird. The weird wasn't to my taste but hopefully, someone enjoyed it. I haven't done any Mix Media since art class in school. You inspired me to possibly give it a go. Great work Thank you, Brooke

You have made a big difference in how I approach photography even though I've been at it for over fifty years now. I love photography, it's what's keeping me young, the thirst for learning. There are no rights or wrongs in art, but just be aware of the technical issue you may have. Oil paint is acidic and can cause damage to paper in a fairly short time. You shouldn’t mix oil an acrylic and that pumice gel is acrylic. You can always add oil paint over the top of dried acrylic(never the other way round), a good way of working is seal the surface with a clear acrylic and let the oil paint sit on the top layer.

I have always been a fan of yours - I'm a portrait photographer and followed you since Creativelive - I always had that urge to create something more out of my images; moving the viewer with even more dimension, and after spending an entire Sunday searching different mixed media ideas for inspiration, I find it so funny to land on your video here. You are truly inspirational - thank you for being such an awesome human :)

A lot of time when we think of mixed media we think of physical media combinations but the same can be applied with digital media exclusively, going from a digital camera, to a digital photo editing software to a digital drawing software is as much mixed media as printing the photo and adding paint into it, the reason I mention this is because people usually think of mixed media only in physical ways and that can handycuff you for no reason. The last piece was interesting, but something that was particularly interesting to me was that the paint had a strong texture and it contrasted heavily the flat image of the photo print, which is something you can easily utilise in make it part of your final product (which probably happened in this case as well).

I’m surprised you are using oil paints. I was just wondering if there was any particular reason to choose oils over acrylic paints? Particularly as you are painting directly onto prints. Because of the oil in the paint it will soak through any paper and require paper to be sealed first. Having said all that I love that you are just doing your own thing. I have been wondering for a while how I could mix my painting skills with my photography skills other than the conventional ways lol. 😊 thanks for sharing T x

Hi Brooke! This is amazing. Thank you for always sharing #WhiteWallWednesdayPortraits! I’ve been wanting to paint on photographs, myself but I’m not sure if the mix of the media will depreciate the piece faster. I simply want to preserve my work properly. Not sure if I’m right when it comes to the depreciation due to mixing of media. Should there be a ‘correct’ type of paper/canvas in which I’ll print my photo on before I can paint on it? Also for the finishing coats? Highly appreciated, Brooke!!! Please and thank you so much!!

Fascinating, Brooke. While I've been SIP'ing, I've been dabbling in photo encaustics and looking to do the same kind of thing with some of my images. Curious that the two images you showed us, the pattern of the paint and certainly the colors are very similar. What does partially obscuring the face or head in sort of an exploded manner with red signify to you? Is this part of your grief process? I LOVE watching you swing out there!

The painting really fits to your photographs! Can you just paint on the pigment prints/c-prints? Or do you prepare the paper?

Needs to be somewhat absorbent, so a print on photographic paper prob won't work. A matte watercolor type paper with inkjet process will be better.

Great results! Well done. But I felt a bit confused as I saw you using the hairdryer. Oil paint never dries because there is no water. It hardens. Using an alkyd based medium with the paint should fasten the process.

I'm doing my best to get them back. KZfaq changed how you get subtitles and I'm having trouble figuring it out. I managed it on my last video and I'm working on it right now for this one. Believe me it's a priority, I just didn't know how after the system changed.
