In this video, I take free mixing exercise tracks and mix them. I didn't know the song, the artiste or heard the tracks before starting to mix.
I thought it would be a good Idea to show the thought process and steps taken when mixing.
On top of that, I forced myself to only use included tools in samplitude so you can have an Idea of what it offers.

Thank you. I have been searching for a video like this for a long time. It is the best one i have found so far. However, there were times when you were doing things and remaining silent, not explaining what you were doing. Do you have a video where you take time and explain what the options you choose actually do? At the end you talked bout another video for mastering. I am going to look for that now. Thank you, my mixing and production results stink.

I'm glad it helped... I wanted to show how it can be done with Samplitude but explaining all the tought process of every decisions would make a 5 hours video and I didn't want to invest that much time. Mixing is all about reacting on what the tracks are about.. If you have a specific question, write it down here. I'll try to answer you or I may even make a video on the subject if it could benefit others. Thanks for your interest !

This is called latency. It can depend on many things. Are you using the internal sound card or a proper audio interface ? The drivers should be the latest asio drivers found on the maker's website. If it's the case, try lower buffer settings. Usually 512sample and less makes a VSTi playable in realtime.. If it still not working, you have to many things going on in your project, Try freezing tracks (most daw have this fonction.. it process the effects and instruments in new files so they are not done in realtime.. Let me know if it helped !

Hopefully someone can help me with this. When recording on track one and then track two. The timing is off and it sounds like a train reck. Is there a setting to fix this so am able to record they are time perfectly together 😢 thanks 🙏
@MarcoPrimeau
@MarcoPrimeau Жыл бұрын
This sounds like a latency problem. Make sure the buffer is as small as possible usually, I start at 256 and try lower if not try higher step by step. In all regards if you add many virtual instruments, there isn't any fix for latency cause your computer as to many things to do. If you are using samplitude you can freeze those tracks to limit the realtime processing.. same goes with some heavy plugins, you can remove and see if it helps.

Hate to disagree with your technique, but you should start with the drums and assign them to a sub, then get a balanced mix and consistent levels and add any Eq or effects. Then add the bass and get it so the drums and the bass work together for the whole song. Don't sit there and play with one instrument too much all alone, you have to see how it is working with the other instruments, get a quick decent sound, then add. And while the underlying tracks are playing, then tweak it to fit. I have mixed songs where it all fits together and sounds awesome, but if you listen to one instrument on it's own, it sounds like crap, but sonically with everything else, it works. Then start adding the rhythm guitars, keyboards, etc... to a sub and get them working together with the drums and bass, one at a time, then add main vocal, then background vocals, to a sub, then any solos, to a sub. With them assigned to subs easier to pull whole sections back, so you don't overdrive the final output and so you don't screw up your underlying base mix. The underlying base mix is what holds the song together and drives it. That way as you add each part for the song, you can see what, if anything, is stepping on the others and adjust one or the other or both accordingly. And you will get better masters faster... It's kinda like making soup... if the soup stock is crap (drums and bass), then no matter what meat (rhythm section), vegetables (vocals) and spices (solos) you add, it will still taste like crap.

Thank you so much for this video! You don't know how much this helped me! But I have one question. Why put different elements in the mix on the same bus with the same reverb? But again thank you and I looking forward to the mastering video! Hope you sometimes can do a video with payed plugins and compare it to stock plugins in Samplitude! Bye😊
@MarcoPrimeau
@MarcoPrimeau 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Wille, I'm going to keep your suggestion for a compared plugins video. The idea of using the same reverb for many instruments/tracks is to create a common acoustic environement much like a stage situation. Sharing the same reverb make the instruments sounds like they were recorded at one time in the same room which is not always true. It's a personnal preference which you aren't forced to share. Some mix engineer like to build 2-3 reverbs for the vocal only. The other point of using busses to put effects on is to lower the amount of work you need to setup the same effect on many tracks and also be gentle on your computer ressources.

Hi Marco, great video and thanks for that. My question is ... if you use a reverb in an aux for the drums, do you use the same amount of reverb on each tom, snare, kick etc...? I sometimes put more reverb on the snare en less on the kick than the other parts of the drum. What do you think is the best thing to do ? Thanks in advance. 👍
@MarcoPrimeau
@MarcoPrimeau Жыл бұрын
I do think that everything that works for the song is ok.. I often go the natural way about it.. meaning puting more reverbs on room mic(s) the a bit less on the overheads, then nearly none on the close mics or maybe a bit on the snare.. This the creative parts each of us need to explore ;)

Also can you tell me is there a way to set up a second master fader?

@@abigaillynn15 No, but you can create a Buss, on which you will send all the tracks outputs (call it main buss or any other names) then send the output of this but to the master buss (fader). What this allow is to send the signal of this main buss to an aux and send this aux to a physical output for the headphone amp. I'm using Samplitude and just about finished with a new song. In the past I was able to select all objects and move the whole project to the left with 4 seconds before the song starts to play. For some reason after I select all objects the project will not move at all. I could record to an external cd recorder but would rather go directly from Samplitude to my computers cd burner... Can you tell me why my whole project will not move to the left?
@MarcoPrimeau
@MarcoPrimeau 5 жыл бұрын
There is 2 kind of selection in Samplitude, Range and Object selection. You don't need to move anything to export your song, you just make a Range selection by selecting the in the area where the measure numbers are or on the upper part of a track. To select an object you make your selection in the lower part of the track/object. Think of each track as beeing separated in half. Left click on the lower half of your last track on the beginning of the song and while keeping the click down move to the end of the first track and let go. You should have all your objects selected. If needed I can do a video about Selection and object manipulations...

Yes Samplitude is backward compatible. The only bug I had was when recording punch in and out with the new version (on an older project) The monitoring wouldn't mute the range while recording. But this might just be me who didn't setup it up properly. The New X4 version is nicely done and is very stable.
