Good conversation. Maybe it's just the KZfaq video but the high end sounds like it has a crunchy overdriven distortion.

Saw he was using the fab-filter stuff. try to provoke more questions about what tools he is using. It's great that he is using multi band compressors, but a lot of guys who are just starting out don't know what to use for this. Also I'm still not sure how he was compressing his stereo imaging (such as leaving room on the sides)? Great video, learned some cool tricks.

hahaha very cool yes i rarelly use compression or eq over high quality sample sounds, this is stupid the only reason to do this will be to convert a good sound in a bad sound, impressivelly clean low mids, noticed that in the MB Pro when he solo the bands, also thanks to clarify a lot mid and sides optimization for clubs.

Viktor Onopko He's not playing the mastered version louder.....The mastered version *sounds* louder because it's been compressed, saturated and limited

So the trick is to use compression to pump (create movement) your mid range? Hm. I'm re watching it. Good stuff
@QuabmasM
@QuabmasM 8 жыл бұрын
You tighten up the compression in the mid where alot of the low mid and lows are but you dont do it in a way that removes dynamics but rather adds(in other words using a real slow attack that allows the drums to have a little more dynamic range from the other center information). Adding a little more gain after that doesnt hurt the overall sound in the mid. However, now you have just allowed for the highs to have a little more dynamic range in an airy way(and the general mix style has alot of the high and airy information in the sides especially if you have added stereo width with some sort of spreading tool). That sprouting flower shape is pretty standard(mono lows, stereo highs). Luca stated though that he isnt a fan of the super high airy information though so he doesnt spread it but just the highs right before those harsh frequencies around 20K. The end result is more movement that is musical. Even if the song was mono, their is a pleasant air and lift that can be heard when the low mids are EQ in a way that the highs sound like they were given a lift and the lows sound louder too. Watch Luca on the Pensado interview and youll learn alot there too.

Yeah I saw a FM video where he was using fab MB. He had a band roughly 2K-7K that with increased gain. I cant recall if it was expansion or compression settings put he really had it pumping. Also he as you mentioned had the those harsh frequencies I'm learning he means between 10k-12k+ he had those compressed for sure so they are easier on headphones for people. I really gotta get a knack of this movement/pumping technique for sure. Any good videos or articles that do into clear detail for what to listen for and step by step instruction my friend?

Johnny Diaz I dont know of any tutorials off the top but I literally just made a compilation of some of my fav "aha" moment tutorials. If you go to my youtube page you should find the playlist called like best mixing tutorials or something. I saw Pensado ride the volume fader on some tracks and speak on how great mixers do that. They would ride the fader on the drums to add more pumping pre-compression. Riding the volume fader post compression can sound good too on almost any track too if you want more movement(especially if you have bus compressors already turned on). Mixbustv has good teachings on masterbus compressors and how they can glue the sound in great ways(in fact Imma add those videos to the playlist soon). Mixing With The Masters or something like that is a channel where Ive invested hours hearing certain mixers and masters speak on how they solve certain issues.

Johnny Diaz (also) To have good pumping and movement though I think its all about mastering the compressors. Knowing how to open up that attack with slower settings but have a fast release to enhance the transients on the master bus...even better if you do this using a multiband compressor doing it only to the mids(not the sides) and only attenuating the lows and the low mids. Riding the fader over a well mixed project can add more movement(like literally drawing squiggly lines up and down on the fader's automation going up a db and down a db or a half at any given time). It sounds good on loud mixes and on drums in general to add life. Theres so much art into how to ride faders. Watching people automate the volume for classic music was an eye opener for me...makes the synthetic instruments sound so much more real. Parallel compression to add a pumping sound to drums isnt bad either(fastest attack and fastest release). Compression was the thing i loved most, hated the most, and took me th longest to master. I re-learned how to use it so many times Im almost ashamed. I did better when I understand the sound but not the mechanics then once i understand the mechanics, i didnt understand why my compression sounded like crap.

I swore by fast attacks then by slow attacks until I came full circle and realized via mistakes when the fast attack is killing my mix or when the slow attack is being a liberal jerk and not doing its job. I almost became like a mad scientist driven mad by mixing. My crap mixes sounded better than man informed mixes until i re-learned everything inch by inch(Im just an ambitious hobbyist home mixer who swears you can get studio quality results at home if you have studio quality understanding of the tools). I have pages of notes I wrote every year I came to a new understanding of mixing. I couldve learned all this crap way quicker if I could just sit under a transparent-honest mixer(with notable talent) and watch them mix for a few hours among a few days. i shouldve paid to do that as such isnt so hard(great mixers are everywhere but they arent all transparent when teaching their "secrets" properly...I swear Im going to make a music channel next year and spill all the beans). Today you can pay nearly $500 to learn the stuff you find online for free. The paid teachings always leave out valuable information though that they swear they didnt have time to tell you but you dont know what you dont know until you know you dont know it and recognize that the person who does know it didnt bother to tell you. Free teachings are just as good but you have to search multiple channels with sharp questions(and know what to ask/search for). After years of doing it the hard way and learning the hard lessons, Id rather I would have paid to watch a guy mix my music for than fall into the gap of "should I pay this guy who is better than me or learn to do it myself?". I wouldve/shouldve done that but I was hard headed and thus it took me years to learn enough stuff to consider myself "capable" of good results and learning what I dont know when the issues come up I feel as though my mixes arent sounding as good as they can. Most home mixers hit that rut and swear they cant go any further w/o buying this or that or paying him or them but Ive long discovered if you fight through it, youll truly learn all the limitations were well beyond your former perceived boundary lines...its like the struggle of turning Super Saiyan for the first time if you understand the ref....like trying to learn how to beat M Bison with every character on normal mode when youre a kid playing Street Fighter II and dont "know all the moves"....and it feels like hes cheating to stop you from winning too lol.Johnny Diaz

That sounded terrible. Way too much top end. The idea of mastering should be to enhance the mix and make it commercially loud. Not completely change the eq curve.
