MIXING DARK WATERCOLORS (in 6 Easy Ways)

Mixing dark watercolors is something we have to do on a regular basis, here are a few quick ways of doing it.
Some involve using lamp black as a basis, others don't use black at all. Together, they show the wide range of dark colors that can be created, even when you are mixing just two colors together. Imagine the range if you used three or even four colors! Layering watercolors will create even darker tones, and you can do this with these mixes, and create even more depth of color. The scope is endless, and I hope this video helps you get started with mixing dark watercolors.

Thank you for this content. I hate using black. So many birds appear to have black in their feathering from a glance. Yet it is not. I love the Phatho Green and Crimson mix. I am sure I will use it soon. Lamp black with violet works too

Thanks Ralph, yes as you say there is much more to the colour black when you view a subject such as a bird, dog, cat, horse and so on. You need to look behind all of that fur, zoom into the reference photograph, and you start to see the colours behind the scenes. Paul 🎨

Thanks Judy, this is just the way I do things, certainly not in the traditional methods of using watercolour, but I enjoy it and of course it works. 😊

I'm glad my video is helpful to you, there are some lovely dark mix combinations depending on the colours you have, so still play with some ideas, just by mixing your three primary colours. 😀
