this video is amazing, because a lot of us work with either a: drums with ill qualities magnified by recording, or more likely b: badly recorded drums. Hats off to you grant, for doing a video in the real world.

Man! I know a lot of people probably write this to you, but I just have to say it! I have a LOOOOOOOOOOT of Waves plugins and use quite a bit of them on each and every single track! But I still don't like what I'm hearing! And then I stumbled across this and followed the steps to a T. As in, I just copied every single thing you did and pasted it into my project. And I was amazed at the Quality of the audio! I had a hard time believing that THAT type of sound was possible with a few of the basic Inbuilt FX. Thank you man for what you do! From the bottom of my heart! God Bless👌🏻🙏🏻

I had some drums I had to clean up like this recently. The drum recording I had was too far gone in my opinion so I just used Slate Digitals Trigger to add in some drum replacement. Blended the kick snare and toms with the samples and used the overheads from the recording. Did some sculpting similar to what you did here, then the magic happened! Good stuff!

Nice work, man! Some people might be complaining about it being a little over-processed or muffled, but I really like what you did with what you had. There's a lot to be said for working with what you got. Anyway, I find this useful not because I work with live recordings, but because I make electronic and sampled music, and it's ridiculously helpful to see how traditional mixing engineers tackle problems like this. Thanks!

Great job fixing up those drums! But, oh those hi-hats :-P Blehh! It's not in the scope of this video, and in the context of the song they work as-is. But usually when I get a hi-hat mic track this dark/coarse/nasty I find an *exciter* (used delicately) can make the hats sound much crisper, and like they were more expensive circles of metal. An exciter can add high-frequency content that didn't even exist in the original track :-) ...just don't use too much!
@MrMikeyGlasses
@MrMikeyGlasses 10 жыл бұрын
Nice tip. An exciter can work wonders on a flat snare sound too
@iamtherealrenedescartes
@iamtherealrenedescartes 10 жыл бұрын
Distortion does the same. An EQ can never "add" or "remove" frequencies - only attenuate and intensify frequencies! Whereas distortion, harmonic exciters, pitch shifters/correctors, phase shifters/rotators, synthesisers etc. all add to the original source. It is also, in my opinion, better to use these as "parallel" processors rather than inserts. That way, you can fine-tune and retain the original source signal without destroying it too much.
@StephenTack
@StephenTack 10 жыл бұрын
Descartes Rene yes, most exciter plugins are just a clipping distortion and a low-pass filter, with a blend/effect-level (so they are kind of parallel when inserted). And yes, you could get more control by using them in parallel (though many don't have a mix control that will go 100% wet), but it's super easy to just throw an exciter on dull-sounding hi-hats, set on stun, to add just a bit more "Pshhhht."

Hey Graham. Love your channel first and foremost. I have a question and would really like if you could answer it for me. Do DAWS have a certain sound about them? I know in general some vary with headroom and etc, but do some DAWS have a box sound and some a different sound. I know the way you mix ur material determines how ur final mix sounds, but do DAWS differ in general sound? Thank you for your time and bless you.

I have a question on mixing drums. Our drummer wants the drums on a song to sound very echoey and dissonant. How can I make the drums sound really vintage and crappy but still sound pro quality?
10 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the shortcut is: Record the drums, quantize it (if is necessary but preserving the feeling), convert to midi and use any DRUM SAMPLER PLUGIN (BFD, Native Instruments, etc) with vintage drums or any combinations...
@djtiii
@djtiii 10 жыл бұрын
Diego Muñoz If you want something vintage do not quantize it. They didn't quantize, so you shouldn't either. As for echoey and distant, think why albums sounded that way and attempt to replicate. You do not need a drum samples to produce this effect. Look into vintage filters like Izotope vinyl and add some convolution verb to it. Ideally, do what they do in the film business... re-record the track by playing it through a shoddy mono speaker in mono. Mic positioning and good use of reverb become key then.
10 жыл бұрын
Good point.
10 жыл бұрын
Diego Muñoz My point was that I found some Vintage Drums Samples that sound really good (specially with cymbals, for example). I work with this process in the past and choose between different sets quickly. And is matter of a few minutes of work. The quantize option was an "extra", if quantization is need (because not all the drummer are like thats old vintage sessions drummers) and just to avoid to left the quantize option to the end (midi) which can be to much digital in my opinion.
@djtiii
@djtiii 10 жыл бұрын
Diego Muñoz You're certainly right about old vintage drum sessions being fairly difficult to replace. Samples may very well be necessary if you dont have the right set too, since much of the sound is from the drum head and how the drummer hits it. It might be possible to find an old session and convert that into midi to get the right vibe.

It is always better to RERECORD such drums. I ALWAYS insist on rerecording. Session drummer, different studio, samples - whatever! I even refuse to mix such crappy tracks, because people DESERVE good sound. This is the reason I work everyday. Money is not the reason to accept something that is obviously BAD. Bad sound must be deleted and forgotten. Especially when bad sound is produced by a bad band that plays tasteless music.
