Just a tip; I always clean up the vocal, automate the level, removing harsh frequencies and low rumble before compression. You can get a pretty clean vocal with some serial compression. You can clearly notice the vocals become shouty after the cla2a. This is easily fixed by dipping out some 1-4k BEFORE compression.

FYI: the closer you get to the microphone the more proximity effect (which leads to increased and usually undesirable low frequency build up) So DON'T STAND TOO CLOSE to the microphone boys and girls because it's not a GOOD RECORDING TECHNIQUE! Also dipping in and out of the red is NOT necessarily a BAD THING! STAYING PINNED IN THE READ IS A BAD THING! #IJS

You dont want to use the gate last though , because after the heavy compression you are using you are amplifying the imperfections of the vocal; if you gate and dess, and do reductive eqing before youre compression, you will have dealt with the unwanted frequencies before increasing them.

Yoo got a question about gain when recording. Now i followed the vid and did what he says. had my mic gain on about 45% when i was recording, used my voice as usual but even when the mix shouldve been done its waaay to low volume on the vocals. Can barely hear them at all.. im obiously doing something wrong but have no idea what as i follow the vid. Usually i would rec on 50 to 75 % depending on if im rapping, singing or whispering in the mic and then when mixed itll always be loud enough. Sometimes it feels like i get more from recording to loud and turning down the vocals when i mix them (make sure that its not peaking ofc).. if anyone have any ideas or input pls let me know

Hello loved this video! I have a question ....if you are a singer and you not trained conventionally but you have written a song and recorded it into to your DAW and now want to make a song arrangement around it but are not really sure what key you are singing in how would I know what key to make the track in around it and what key to put for the auto-tune in? Any tips for that because for some reason when I write a song and try to make an arrangement around it it just seems so difficult and daunting vs just making a song over a beat I already made. Any tips?

Isaac Reain How do you even think you make sense? It's all subjective and preference. A great engineer doesn't critique the next engineers craft. It's about how it sounds more than anything else. What's the fullest potential of a tool? You could never speak for any great engineer. So try to phrase and word your comments, to where you're only speaking for yourself..
@jamarjeffery1480
@jamarjeffery1480 6 жыл бұрын
Isaac Reain Than your not a real engineer, and can't speak for any. Lets hear your mixes of you using the tools to the fullest potential. How can you disagree or agree with the fact that great engineers never mix any song the same. Andrew Scheps is one of the greatest engineers ever. And he always says like every other reputable great engineer says, use your ears. Any smart person knows that what works for him want work for you. So I don't get the point of your comment, because there's simply no point. It's egotistical and pointless to bash the next engineers skills. I can't take you serious anyways. You started your sentence with a lowercase I and then end it with a thumbs up. Only dumb people try to disagree with facts, I never stated a opinion. But you suck at grammar, so I'm sure you can't comprehend.

I think your statements are subjective.I never want my artist to be right up on the mic like that.As far as the sound in a small vocal booths.You don't need a large room.So I dont agree at all with your recording technique.
