A super cool event could be joining a church wanting to do a full system upgrade (acoustic treatment, drum enclosure, amps, soundboard, etc etc) and the live workshop becomes setting everything up for the church. Then you have a rotating panel of professionals coming in over three to four days teaching about why they chose what they did for the church. Talk about PA design, how to decide how much acoustic treatment, channel strip assignments, gear inventory management, so many possible topics…

I think one thing that people struggle with is the band not playing together and not being able to identify where the issue is the band and where it's their mixing skills. Identifying that is a skill in itself. What to do from there, especially in a live situation, is a lifelong process. I'm glad such a focus on gainstage and low end management during the presentation. Most people don't realize the importance. Like he was talking about masking, in the way that reducing competitive sounds so that they balance better is another key. When i mic monitors and someone has a loud mic and asks for more I will first listen ttyl see if another channel in their mix is just to loud rather than automatically turning up the channel they asked for. A small cut can be more noticing than a big boost.

Jake thank you for this great video. As a intermediate mixing engineer, something sticked out to me between Luke Hendrickson from Bethel and Jesse. Luke said he is a stereo guy, for him everything should be stereo. On the other hand Jesse is saying he likes mono because it helps him have more control of the source in terms of placement in the mix. Which approach should many of us beginners/intermediate take? Bethel mix sounds so good but so does Red Rock church with Jesse too.

You can use any DAW. Logic Pro X is probably the easiest to pick up. Reaper is free. Garageband is free on Mac I'm pretty sure. Ableton Live is something I only really use for making music. You can mix with any DAW.

Hello. I have a question for you guys. What's the best way to get the mixer's audio to be as clean as possible? Because we're capturing audio with a Focusrite 2i4. Moreover, the audio appears to be severely compressed. (the mix is good) Do you think you can help us with our problem?😅

I mean plugins are definitely all NOT the same. Do you NEED a $2500 plugin vs a $25 plugin? Most definitely not, but one of the biggest reasons is the coloration and unique things certain circuits (and emulated circuits digitally) do things that are worth paying for in many cases. Also, something like the Slate infinity eq gives you way more bands than the stock logic plugin, but both do a great job. I get what you are saying for the purpose of this talk and don't disagree, but all EQ's are not created equal lol.
@hastyscorpion
@hastyscorpion 2 жыл бұрын
That was kind of his entire point. That for a live environment those things are not worth it. That for the things that you need an EQ to do in a live environment they are pretty much all the same. You shouldn't be using 20 bands. If you are using more than 3 or 4 there is a source problem. And as he said at the beginning you aren't paying for quality you are paying for options. In a live environment you don't want a ton of options. You want one thing that works very reliably. Live mixing is quick and dirty. You don't have months to dial things in perfectly. You have to do it right then and there and you only have a limited amount of brain space and time. Simplicity is much more important than perfection. Introducing fancy plugins greatly increases the likelihood of a crash and the likelihood that you will forget something.

1:22:51 That's crazy for a 25k Protools Rig. Meanwhile a 60$ Reaper session doesn't care if you are authorised or not, doesn't even force you to pay those 60$ after 60day trial period ends... Point being here - their greed force them to be so afraid of potential illegal uses that they even fail the paying customers. Funny to see everyone chasing "industry standards" and paying huge amounts for Ableton, ProTools, Logic when there are alternatives that often gets the same job done and sometimes even better.

Before you can run, you have to walk. Before you walk, you have to crawl. While I appreciate the information, I wish the information was actionable. For example, getting a good monophonic mix is more important than jumping into a mastering a stereo mix. Understanding general EQ use-- positive as well as negative EQing and a hands on demo is more important than just theoreticals. Focusing on fundamentals such as the relative loudness of each channel (lead singer vs background singer), (lead instrument vs supporting instruments), (percussion loudness), etc. with demos -- would be 100% more effective than just talking about it. I would also suggest talking about analog vs digital consoles, dbx DriveRacks, Jensen transformer DIs, microphone recommendations, 2-way talkback system, hand signals of worship team to sound team, notifying the worship team when all channels are muted so guitar can be plugged/unplugged, etc. etc. I can easily think of two dozen (crawl) items that should've been discussed before talking about advanced panning, reverb and other (running) items. In short, fundamental mixing skills/tips are far more important than talking about advanced theoretical mixing.

Why do you guys need this stuff to worship your god? Serious question. Like if I just want to tell someone I love them, I may need my phone for that, but I shouldn't need to EQ my voice as I'm telling them that. Before you post a super complicated, long-winded reply that proves to me that there is some value to this stuff in a worship setting, read over what you write and ask, "What would Jesus say?"

Worship mixing is different from rock/pop/soul/hiphop mixing because...oh, wait, physics is just physics and these are not different AT ALL. So maybe STOP trying to pretend Christian audio in fealty to a conservative gun-toting anti-vaxing MAGA jeebuz is in some way different from Muslim audio, or Buddhist audio, or ancient Greek god audio (though I have it on reliable account that Poseidon _did_ require a specifc model of Allen & Heath SQ series mixer along with early model Distressors, but I digress...).
