Are you curious how to mix paint “just with water” like everyone talks about? Do you wonder what the ratios are, and how you know when you’ve got your mix right?
Today I’ll show you how to mix tube paint (student- or artist-grade soft-body acrylic paint, NOT craft paint) with water to make a LOVELY thin paint that’s perfect for Dutch pours and other hair dryer pours!
I mix my paints by weight because a digital scale makes it SUPER easy to keep track of what you’re doing. But mixing paint and water can easily be done without a scale.
The key is to add the water just a little bit at a time, and mix until it is fully incorporated before adding more water. If you add too much water at once, your paint will stay lumpy and give you trouble when it’s time to paint.
The ratios I got while mixing were:
Blick Studio Acrylics - 2 parts paint to 1 part water
Master’s Touch Acrylics - 1 part paint to 1 part water
Creative Inspirations - 1 part paint to 1 part water
If you want to see how I mix paint with floetrol for most of my pours, my video is here! • Mixing Paint for Acryl...

Lol my first Dutch pour was a few days ago. I definitely made them too thin, but one came out really good! I'm only 3 paintings in so far.

I bought a bunch of Master's Touch premixes and pearlized small tube set. Then I realized I have a knack for this and went all out on Jerry's Artarama. Got my floetrol, GAC 800, Creative Insights and Amsterdam colors.

Yes, even though I knew it was a possibility, it’s always interesting to see how differently different brands can behave. But I love using multiple brands because it seems to help cells form!

Yay! Yes I have a friend in England who does lots of pours using glue and water as a pouring medium. But just water works great for certain things, like Dutch pours.

Yes I use tap water. Distilled water might make the shelf life a bit longer, but I haven’t had any issue using tap water for pours.

Curious, would you say the paint that your using can be compared to say like a type of house paint. In other words would you call it a water based paint ? Some paints are oil based and require a different type of thinning / cutting.
@AnnaBlountArt

House paint is a latex-based acrylic paint. I like to use it in some pours but not mixed just with water.

Question, I am a life casting artist. I have been dying to do painting pouring techniques but not sure how well it will work on aginate or plaster which are more pourous then canvas. I assume I will need to thin the paints in order to get them to pour. Any suggestions??
@AnnaBlountArt
@AnnaBlountArt Ай бұрын
That’s cool! Have you done any paint pouring on other surfaces? For acrylic pouring, the paints do need to be thinned with a pouring medium, or floetrol, or sometimes just water. For vertical surfaces, I love Apple Barrel pouring medium. You can look at my vase pour playlist to see how I do that! In terms of it being more porous, you could possibly spray a coat of primer over before pouring on it, to minimize paint absorption.

I've done some very simple pours, all flat surfaces. I want to do pours specifically on life casts I make for families while mom is pregnant. I cut them and shape them into a bowl we then use for newborn photo shoots. I will be spraying a gloss coat first to make the slip easier and what I'm aiming for is a diluted, almost water color effect. My instinct is to mix with water but not sure if something else would be better.
@AnnaBlountArt
@AnnaBlountArt Ай бұрын
@@RiseandSHINEdailyinspiration oh interesting. So will the pour be on the inside of the cast, or the outside? You’ll want to be careful that the paint doesn’t all pool in the middle of the cast! A gloss coat would improve slip for sure, but it might make it harder for the paints to adhere. Maybe you could try your process on an inexpensive bowl first? You could spray it as planned and paint it as planned, and see what happens!

@@AnnaBlountArt outside. Just like a regular bowl. These are custom made bowls, the cast is made from the mother's belly bump :) so each is unique and custom. It takes a couple hours to make a cast so I only make one and only get one shot at pouring the paint. I'm going to play around with cuttings to see how well the paint slips without and without a primer paint.

Could i use Arteza Gouache paint
@AnnaBlountArt
@AnnaBlountArt 9 күн бұрын
Interesting question! I just did a bit of reading about gouache because I’ve never used it. It seems like gouache doesn’t have as durable a binder as acrylic paint, making it prone to crack or flake when applied in a thick layer. So if you want to pour with gouache, I’d recommend mixing it with an actual pouring medium like liquitex or apple barrel, instead of thinning primarily with water or floetrol. This might add enough binders to make it not brittle and chalky.

That only works with expensive paint.
@AnnaBlountArt
@AnnaBlountArt Ай бұрын
Not necessarily! It just has to be true acrylic paint, not craft paint. Creative inspirations paint is about $2 per 4oz tube, which isn’t bad at all!
