How to mix strings to make them sound EPIC and STAND OUT? For instance in a hybrid epic orchestral track. In this video I show you my workflow. In the Logic Pro session of my own track called "The Deep" - it's on the channel if you would like to hear the entire track ;)
But realize, this isn't a one-size fits all solution. Yet, you still should get some great pointers about using EQ (think about boosting frequencies in left or right spectrum) and the use of a saturation plugin. So start experimenting with your own settings and trust your ears!

An interesting tip specially to EQ, I usually like not to cut the low frequencies from the high violins, however I would try for having a more clear sound

Fact is this may work in the context of your track using specific libraries. Yet, these settings are extreme. I don't think there is one set of miracle EQ setting for any track. I know for instance that wether I use EW or Nucleus or BBC, I will apply different values. And we may keep in mind that those expensive libraries of ours, cost a fortune because they are so well recored and produced .... But on that particular context it worked great :)

So true Stephane! This worked in this specific track and it isn't a one-size fits all solution. Far from that! But the pointers you can get out of the video (at least in my humble opinion), is that you can do a lot more with EQ than most of us realize (boosting frequencies in the left, right spectrum for instance) and what a great effect a saturation plugin can give in a hybrid epic orchestral track. And yes, libraries are very expensive indeed!

@@gh0stwrit3r Agreed ! I found Nucleus 'prepared' for that kind of music out of the box, compared to Eastwest more versatile and Spitifre better in the soft part. I personnaly use Cubase and its stock plugins that are more than enough given my own ability :) Keep up the good work !

@@gh0stwrit3r Given this discussion you guys are the perfect people to ask! I have Purchased EastWest Hollywood Orchestra, and i am not liking the sound. I started with Nucleus, which i love the sound of. How can mix Hollywood Orchestra to make it sound exactly like Nucleus? Can you make a video about this?

Not the best way to mix Orchestral Music - but good demonstration of what EQ can do to improve a sound. Whilst there are no hard and fast rules - there are guidelines. Produce the audio track (AU/VST) - Export Audio Tracks (STEMs) New Session import STEMs - Adjust Tracks for gain typically around -18dBs to maximise good headroom. Switch to Mono - adjust Balance* - Switch back to Stereo add EQ/Compression etc as needed. Mix. Then Master. Logic is favoured in the industry as it produces very clean interleaved Audio (from whatever AU/VST). Logic is also good to mix. However Pro Tools is still the industry standard (but slowly loosing ground) for Mixing. * Some Engineers like to do everything in mono until the final mix.

Hi John, all good points that everyone should know. No discussion about that! My goal with this video was only to show an approach of mixing strings in a hybrid epic orchestral music track like in The Deep. And that track isn't orchestral as in classical/realistic. Far from that!
