In this video I go through my process on editing and raw vocal tracks to prepare them for the mixing process. I include gain staging, editing breaths and pops out, lining up background vocals to the lead vocal, and more!

3 years from this video, and I just found genius the idea of V-violet Vocals, B-blue Bass...... Is simple, stupid but makes sense, genius leave clues! come on man, come back with some nice tutorials in 2024.

Why split and adjust volume instead of using an envelop to target particular words/phrases/sections? Is there a difference in the end product?

Probably not a big difference. For me I do the volume adjustment and doing things like lining up (pocketing) vocals to the beat, and background vocals to the leads all in the same process, so it's easier for me to do it all in one "lane" rather than an envelope that I may have to move separately. As with most things REAPER, there's probably a dozen ways to do this, so whatever works for you is probably no different in the end.

Well, i have to watch every single second of this video as my vocal part does not sit well with my mix. I thought tweaking reverb will do the job but it’s not.

If you can't get your vocals to sit in the mix with just EQ and compression, stop there before adding any additional fx, especially something like reverb which can tend to bury things. Check out the video I have on how I mix vocals for more info, and of course, let me know if you have any questions!

DAD, can we use volume automation instead of splitting, and what is best!!!

I do use volume automation in the mixing process, as a post/fader automation, but I wanted to get the gain staging sorted out in this video. I could use trim automation here as well, that's perfectly fine. That's the great thing about REAPER is that there are so many ways to do things. For me, splitting works well during this process as I'm also lining up the vocals, but that doesn't mean my way is any more/less wrong. Thanks for the comment!
