What if all my drum stems are in one track. Same with the instruments, for example the piano and guitar etc are all in one track. Should I still pan the drums to one side and instruments to the other?

Thanks for the video. This is a sparse, EDM example. Starting with the kick at -10 dBFS is a high level. I think -14 dBFS for a full live band with production might be better, especially w/o bussing. I just got the TC Electronic Clarity M and read the mix bus should come in at -23 - -18 LUFS and peak no higher than -6dBFS. This has caused me to pull my levels down quite a bit. I do this with trim plugins so the faders can stay closer to 0 (unity). I also always bus all my groups. Clarity M is a great product. Also, without cymbals and overheads, this isn't the best example for balancing. Sorry I can't PM constructive criticism on KZfaq. You have good lighting and resolution, but your face is way too tight in the frame. Keep it up.

If i am further into my song and i have compressors, eq, delays, reverbs all setup, should I bypass all of those and set my levels first? then bring them all back in with effects and adjust the effect levels? or could I do it with the reverb already there or compressors already there

After watching this I realized I was doing a lot of stuff wrong. Time to fix that

So should you record after or before setting levels? You obviously want some loudness to catch your groove when you're delivering your vocal performance for instance

So one question. if my bass guitar is recorded in mono I don't have to worry about the low end phase issues right? This video has been very helpful thank you. I have a progressive rock song I am working on that gets very busy is certain parts. I was told I should always use a reference track and to use the Reference 2 plugin if my room isn't treated very well. I have some acoustic pannels behind my desk and monitors but i still put my headphones on to double check things are sounding ok because I'm not sure if my monitors are re-producing the sound as accurately as they maybe could be.

Liked and subscribed!!!! I do the same when it comes to balancing starting with the kick/bass and building on that, but at the end my mix sounds too bass heavy, should I worry about that? If I cut the lowend of the kick and bass with a low shelve then the overall track sounds weak, this is where I'm confused. Any ideas how to overcome this situation? Thanks in advance!

I love this video, I've been recording for years and falling at this hurdle then giving up... so 100 plus songs incomplete. Few questions. When you brought the guitars up when they were centered to the correct level, did you need to adjust their volume when you then panned them ? The reason I ask Is im good at levelling when its all through the centre and always come undone when I normally pan my guitars then try to set the level.. being able to set the level correctly in the centre then pan left/right and done would solve a lot of my issues. Was this tutorial in terms of having the kick the loudest track universal for all genres ? for example I do indie rock mainly would this be the template for this also ? Finally I use EZ drummer to create midi drum tracks using the kits thats come with it, most of them when selected use overhead mics.. this means there is bleed from kick/snare etc.. so when trying to set kick first then snare I may hear the rattles of the hi hats... I could mute overhead but then this too would also give me a false sound after I've set the kick/snare levels and reintroduce the overheads. Thanks for any further advice.

with paning of hi hats . Should i both pan to right or left and randomize so the paning variets for each hat?

I see a problem in this. The faders volume are post plugins...

You should level mix in the channel rack instead (pretty sure thats a gain staging method). The mixer faders are the last part and should barely be touched really. Most times theyre like on 0db cuz everything was leveled/gain staged in the channel rack then in the plugins afterwards.

@08:10 it looks like your guitar has NO frequencies what-so-ever living in the vocal space...was that done previous to the video or did it just work out that way. I'd like to see how it was done.

Faders are post plugins so you should never turn those down

Jeez if I started with my kick at -6dB I'd end up way past 0 once the other elements are in place. I use kick + sub together at about -12 to -10. I aim to end up at -6 to -3 with everything

Put a fruity balance on slot 1 of every mixer channel ull be using and lower the gain on fruity balance down Distortion sucks while producing. Dostortion kills ur creativity bc your ears get tired from the distortion that u can't appreciate tje tones of each sound
