For a count of his duels, he had just over 60 1v1 duels in which he won all of them. Contrary to popular belief, not all duels ended in death and Musashi didn’t kill everyone he dueled with. As for a raw kill count that is harder to do as he took on 70 or more men in his fight with the Yoshioka clan only killing some of them and also fought at the battle of Sekigahara.

Little caveat here: the opponent was known for using a longer sword, and he would have had a range advantage on Musashi, so he carved the oar due to length. He still beat a dude with an oar! But sometimes the story is phrased like it was a dis.

it was kojiro who wielded a huge katana so called Nodachi. It is not known exactly what weapons did Musashi use in his duels, but he wrote in the book of five rings that he prefers no particular weapon instead chooses the weapons that suits the situation and the environment. He is also well known for mastering the two-sword style of fighting which is passed down to this day.

Musashi's greatest strength was his unbelievable ability to control the arena and control his opponents. His father was a fighter, Musashi knew intimately the pride and temper of a fighter from observing his father. He learnt from his uncle peace within himself and self control, discipline. Musashi combined these two aspects with none stop training to become a controlled and dangerous person who could read the people around him. His most famous victory, against Sasaki Kojiro, Musashi purposely woke up late, had a long breakfast and arrived at the battle with a makeshift weapon. It enraged Kajiro, who lunged into the fight, missed his target and was killed in a single blow.

The plural of Ronin is Ronin. 😉 Musashi actually used a wooden sword most of his life after grabbing a piece of wood when his sword broke one day. He also used to arrive late in order to get his opponents angry - Bruce Lee borrowed from this story in Enter the Dragon. He's a fascinating character. The book Musashi is an huge epic of Japanese literature, and A Book of Five Rings is essential reading for anyone studying martial arts. It stands level with Lao Tzu and Hagakure on my bookshelf.

i read the book of five rings and got the symbols tatted on my neck. its an excellent book, because its not just war strategy its life philosophy much like the art of war but written as an individual not a commander. musashi was actually a samurai but left his abusive father at like 13 and lived i the woods until his 20s and created his own style, using both swords. the five rings are: fire: to be passionate, violent and aggressive air: to be swift and uncatchable water: to be fluid and malleable (brue lee also mentions this) earth: to be immovable and solid. nothingness: to be nothing, to assume you know nothing, and to be any of the other rings as neccessary but most of all i love how he starts it: "my sword style requires the use of both swords, and the use of the longsword with one hand (the katana is a heavy two handed sword)." then he goes to say something that changed the way i look at life: "it will be difficult at first. but everything is difficult at first" that little phrase changed why i knew i was capable of.
