Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was originally a manga, written and drawn by Hayao Miyazaki, until future producer Toshio Suzuki convinced Miyazaki to turn it into a film. Here, for the Director Project, I briefly discuss how Miyazaki adapted something that was already a masterpiece in one medium, into a masterpiece in another.

I have read the Nausicaa manga twice. They end has shifted my world view. Because where other narratives provide promise of changing the world for the better, in Nausicaa we are shown that sometimes the change we hope for is a false hope, and that what needs to change is our perspective.

I'm Japanese but I don't have heard foreign people talking about Naucicaa so much even though it's the work in which Miyazaki dug the deepest hole of his thought than any other his works. So I'm really glad seeing you introduce this manga with a lot of details.

For another good English language documentary on Naucicaa, I recommend this one by STEVEM. It's really great and in depth. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sKyln6V4rq3anaM.html

Dude, I just watched it and I'm from Israel. It inspired me to create better stories as a writer myself. It was a profound experience. Avatar TLA is practically based on Miyazaki's 3 Dimentional Characters, World-Building and Themes in Nausicaa, which helped it to a great degree to be such a success. I love Miyazaki's limitless imagination and dreamy fictional storytelling and find his work unique and spectacular on many levels. Japanese people should be very proud of this man and his work.

How can I say it all in a few words... I saw "Kaze no tani no Nausicaa" when I was 12 years old... The censored version of "Warriors of the wind"... was the most influential film that I saw as a child... I saw it only two times, in two days in a rented video... I didn't know who was the director, and I didn't found it again. Until eight years later, I saw in a book a page of the comic of "Kaze no tani no Nausicaa" from Hayao Miyazaki... I knew that was a translation copy to English and was the first comic that I bought in English, imported from the USA. I love that manga, now I read it countless time, and for me is better than the film that I also love. I never read a copy in my mother language, always in English or Japanese (Now I also know Japanese, I studied in Osaka). But recently I found that the Woodlouse, the inspiration for the ohmus they can live in a field contaminated by Heavy metals (like lead), and if they eat it, crystalize it in its body cleaning the field... the first paper on this subject was published in 1982 ... so perhaps Miyazaki read it too.

This was awesome! I've always wondered how the manga differs from the Movie in terms of the universal scope. Miyazaki such a phenomenal world builder

Nausicaa was so influential to me, being about 11 or 12 when I saw it. It's definitely my favorite Miyazaki film to date. I didn't get to read the manga until my last birthday, where my friends pitched together to get me the two volume series (we are all poor lol), and I fell in love with it all over again, but in different ways (and I couldn't help but make a "Shining" joke when reading the series). I really do think of them as two different, but overall lovely stories. Each telling sorta similar stories, with similar characters, but overall different from each other. I'm glad you talked about this wonderful story. Not nearly enough people do, which is a shame.

3 years late, but I already ordered the Manga after watching the movie last week. Great video! The importance of color in the movie wasn't really apparent to me until you pointed it out.

Just finished the Nausicaa of the Vallet of the Wind manga really good read, aged very well The difference in writing between the movie and manga is night and day Nausicaa is a top tier mc Ion think stuff like Nier and Attack on Titan would exist without Nausicaa, they werent lying when they said the manga was a pioneer

The film is an adaptation of chapters 1 and 2 of the manga. What is amazing is that some of the best writing and illustration of the entire series is in chapter 3. Nausicaa's arrival at the battlefield and what follows may be the best battle scene ever drawn. Hopefully Miyazaki can adapt more of the story or at least talk about how he wishes the later chapters to be viewed. I believe Miyazaki wasn't entirely satisfied with the later chapters and how Nausicaa ended.

Thank you for your insightful comparison! That's actually my favorite clip from "Tonari no Totoro", even over the bus stop in the rain clip (though it is very close). Is that a Jiji necklace? It's very lovely. Keep up the great work, looking forward to your next video.

What a great exploration. Thanks again for talking about the adaptation process. Source material is good, but there a multitude of reasons for changing things to a different medium. Really interesting man. I really do need to check out his work...though my anime style that I like is more Slice of Life, verses the fantastical (odd, but true).

So I had not known anything about this manga, I happened to purchase a horseclaw action figure that I thought would look great with the mandalorian or Conan and was looking up to see where was it from and now with your review I want to know more and watch the movie so thank you and the video is awesome.

I'd like to hear more about how people feel about the tone taken on genetic engineering in the manga as it spans so many years of Miyazaki's life, and most of the 80s. i first saw the movie at 7 years old in 1986, and looked for the movie for years as i became a teenager. i eventually found some used comics in south dakota in 1996 and found out the name of the movie! i bought a bootleg of the movie around canal st in manhattan the following year. i devoured the manga in full at a library about 20 years ago. it is probably one of my tops as i love the nature stuff, the weird scary magic sorcery stuff, the devastation, and all the different types of machines and strange technology. a really cool book i read when i was 10 is The Luck of Brin's Five (1977) by Cherry Wilder, if you like strange worlds and flying machines and fun plot twists. This first book of the Torin Trilogy sets the scene for the two books that follow it. I think it is a masterpiece that fits in well with Nausicaa's style of storytelling.

No mention of the change from the Doroks to the Pejitei-an who did the atrocities to the Ohmu? Okay. Also, this manga was a profound thing for Miyazaki himself. Taken from nausicaa . net 's translation of his interview after he ended the manga: "During the time I was trying to conclude Nausicaa, I did what some might think is a turnabout. I totally forsook Marxism. I had no choice but to forsake it. I decided that it is wrong, that historical materialism is also wrong, and that I shouldn't see things with it. And this is a bit hard. Even now, I sometimes think that things would be easier if I had not changed."
