“Mizora!” Wyll startles at her sudden appearance.
“Well, if it isn’t the dirty devil from dirty Dirtsville.”
“Hello, Wyll. Still keeping low company, I see.”
Wyll’s tone is forceful. “What do you want, Mizora?”
“Your talents, pet. Oh, don’t worry. We’re beyond slaying demons… and tieflings.” Direct eye contact with Karlach, then back to Wyll. “Zariel has an… anniversary coming up. I believe that a song would make for a unique gift. We can put together a little number for her, just you, me and Karlach. It’ll be fun!”
“Forget it, Mizora! You and Zariel are up to something. Especially if you want both of us!”
“Yeh, why me?”
“She’d just like to see that her favorite little soldier is alive and well! I think it would be very sweet. Like a reunion! Come on, just this once, hmm?”
Karlach wants nothing more than to put her axe through this smug b--ch’s face, but something gives her pause. No. She’s desperate, more than she’ll let on. And she has what we want. I’ll get crafty. I’m crafty. Right? “The video, Mizora.”
“Video?” The devil’s eyes shine with coy evil.
“Come on, you know. The funny one, with…” Karlach laugh-snorts despite trying not to. “With squeaky Astarion.” It takes all her might to not burst into laughter, even after all this time.
“Oh! That one. Yes, I’d say we can do that. Now if we’re all agreed, let’s get cracking! Give me a moment to cook up a venue, and we can start. See you soon, pet!” The devil snaps her fingers and blinks out. This went just as she planned.
Wyll turns, eye wide. “Karlach! You just… negotiated! With Mizora! For us?”
“Can’t believe it myself,” she admits. “But eyy, we have each other’s backs, right?”
“You’re going above and beyond, Karlach. Thank you.”
Everything appears to be ready. Karlach counts off. Standing there at the moment of truth, however, Mizora suddenly realizes that she has never even held this device, much less played it. Her fingers hover over the strings, but she fails to pluck. The crowd boos.
Karlach throws her sticks at Mizora. “Play, ya stupid pecker!”
Mizora squirms, embarrassed beyond her devilish ability to hide it. “This thing isn’t working.”
“Nobody said it would be easy, Mizora!” Wyll feels a bit more glee than he would ever admit. “Try again.”
“Yeah, let’s roll!” yells Karlach.
“At least it’s a… sufficient excuse for you coming home three hours late with dinner.” Lae’zel deftly twirls a bit of lo mein onto her chopsticks.
Gale swallows his mouthful of fruit salad. “I’d say the result far exceeds any gustatory inconvenience to us, as well. I must concede, Mizora eventually performed exceptionally.”
“And I do appreciate you getting that… unbecoming recording back,” says Astarion.
Fwoompf! Mizora appears before the party in her typical sudden fashion. “I’ve found you.” She's more subdued than usual.
Shadowheart asks, “What’s wrong, Mizora? Not that we actually care.”
“Zariel loved the performance.”
“You poor thing. Whatever will you do?”
“That’s just it. She wants more.”
“Oh, what?!” Karlach yells.
“Zariel wants more music. Let’s-”
Wyll growls. “We've already indulged you once today. Go home!”
A paper bag rustles next to Minsc. Boo emerges, cheek-pouches stuffed with nuts. His little claws scale Minsc; he sits on his shoulder and chitters into his ear. “Boo says that we will aid you in return for the plans to Karlach’s heart.”
Mizora is agog. “You’re insane. You’re diseased. You’re frothing f--king mad!!”
“Boo is not angry, Mizora. He is shrewd!”
Minthara smirks. “The risk is worthwhile, cambion. Zariel will not miss a copy of the blueprints. She will, however, notice that you have failed to deliver her entertainment. I wonder what she will do…”
“All right, ALL RIGHT! F--K!” Mizora breathes loudly. “We have a deal.”
Halsin says, “Not so fast. If you are to join our band, you must aid us in our efforts, not hinder us. As part of this bargain, you must uphold the same responsibilities as the rest of us, and not impede us or our goals.”
“Fine.” Her tone is a bit irritated, but mostly resigned. “I’ll be a good little devil and do as you say.”
“Good.” Jaheira pushes a bottle of dish soap into Mizora’s arms. “You can start with the dishes. Then get some sleep, or whatever you do. Proficiency training starts at first light. We can’t afford to have you choke again when we play live. Good night!”
The group suddenly departs, leaving dishes everywhere. Mizora stands quietly, holding the soap, wondering what in the name of Haarlep’s groin she’s gotten herself into.
