Want to know what Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East really think about the conflict? Ask a question and I will get answers.
People ask Israeli Jews questions. I go out and ask random people to answer. Mohi from Palestine asks "Do Arab Jews blame Zionism for their suffering?

HakunaMatata All it really is is the idea that Israel ought to be a home to the Jews. On it's own, there is nothing against Arabs or anything, it's just the belief that Jews ought to live in Israel. It gained popularity from historical persecution of Jewish communities worldwide, the most well known case being the Holocaust (although there was a history of anti-semitism long before that). The view is that the land of Israel ought to serve as a sort of sanctuary for the Jews. To some extent, it is also nearly synonymous with patriotism to many Israelis. I come from an Israeli family but have lived in the United states since 1999 (moved when I was 7), but go back every couple years to visit family, but I think if you asked an Israeli currently living there they would probably tell you the same thing.

The interviewer attempted to put words into the mouths of the interviewees. Nobody had complained of having suffered, yet the questioner repeatedly repeating the words ( I paraphrase ) of did your living in Israel contribute to your "suffering.?" probably attempting to get a headline story to replay in the U.S. His ploy did not work. The incredulous interviewees were too polite to say Mr. your nuts, they simply ignored his attempt to manufacture a story.

Corey Gil-Shuster makes documentaries in which he takes questions posed from outside Israel and asks average Israelis on the street, and films their answers. Having watched dozens of these film clips, I'm pretty sure his only agenda is to teach outsiders about Israel, its people, and its politics. I actually appreciate how hard he tried to tease out any sense of discrimination among these mostly young Israeli-born Jews with roots in the Arab and Muslim world. As other commenters have noted, most of these young Mizrahi Jewish Israelis found the notion that they suffer in Israel because of their ethnic background--especially in relation to the experiences of their recent ancestors in the Arab and Muslim world--totally absurd. (You might get very different answers if you interviewed elders who were born and raised in the Arab world, came to Israel as adults in the late 1940s/early 1950s, and lived in the "ma'abarot" [refugee camps].)

How can the Mizrahim return to the Arab countries they came from? These countries expelled them, stole all their land, businesses, and private property, and as far as I know, there has never been any restitution nor is there any right of return. An Iraqi friend of mine told me his family was given one day to leave, and they lived in a tent in a refugee camp in Israel for many years. Why would the Arabs who expelled them think they can go back?

Kevin Donohue that happened in time of Saddam hussain, as recompense for the jews stole the Land of the arabs. It's part of your belief, eye for an eye right?! Before the jews lived beside the Muslims without any problems. The Muslim saved all this jews, who are from north Africa. They were living in spain and the Christians killed them, beside the Muslims. The Muslims took the jews with them to north Africa and turkey. And now they are biting the hand, who saved their ancestors.

The underlying premise from this question, as Corey points out several times is that Arabs believe that Jews lived without incident in Arab countries. Depending on who you talk to, there were varying levels of discrimination and second-class status. Jews were certainly not equal to Muslims and had restrictive dressing styles, living areas - Jewish quarters, and job restrictions - especially where government was concerned. However, as opposed to investigating their past and discovering how horribly Arab Muslims have treated Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians, Baha'i, Druze, and other religious minorities, most Arabs would rather live in a bubble where they were perfect saints and the Jews only came to Israel under coercion from "the Zionists".

No one is that stupid. Arabs know for sure that minorities were not treated as they should be. That does not apply only to Jewish minorities, but also blacks, and Europeans at some point in history. The point that many Arabs bring is that despite the above, Jews were not suffering anything close to the discrimination that they have suffered in Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries. There is plenty of historical data that proves that. That includes the choice of many Jews after teh inquisitions to settle in Arab/muslim land.

The Truth? There NEVER was a "palestine" land, nor were there ever "palestinians. The Name palestine came from the British who took over the rule of the middle east from the Ottoman Turkish empire in 1920, just after WW1. Before that one can not find any mention of palestine. You can find this fact in libraries all over the world. The Gaza Arabs would like to let us believe they are related to the Philistines which were a ancient people who came from...hold it...Crete. But these got completely wiped out by the old tribes of Israel thousands of years ago in battle.

Or did Zionism have any negative effect/influence on the racism if they are Mizrahim in Israel? But it existed in the past. Many Muslims who comment on Corey's videos have a romantic idea that everything was peaceful and great between Muslims and Jews before Israel, which is far from reality. Also, Morocco has a different history from Iraq, from Syria, from Yemen. From what I read, I think generally Morocco has been one of the best countries for Jews and that is why you are still there. In places like Iraq, Yemen, Libya, there are no Jews left. There is a reason for this.

Valerie4293 in the early 20th century there were pogroms against jews, in the biggest if them 44 jews being murdered. it's wasn't like that all the time, it depends on the empire/kingdom that ruled in that time in morroco. some kings were kind to the jews and some were cruel to them. the Almohad caliphate killed 2/3 of the jews in Morroco. plus in the 50's the situation in Morroco went bad and there were a lot of riots against the jews. my grandfather being beaten up in the street for being a jew, that's what made him to pack everything and leave Mortoco as fast as possible. don't forget that Morroco the only muslim country that had Ghettoes for the jews.

Valerie4293 we also need to be careful and not throw all the Arab countries under the same umbrella. Yes persecution existed, yes the Jews suffered in these Arab lands, but to varying degrees and at different times throughout history. We shouldn't generalize, and I'm certainly not advocating on behalf of the Arab nations treatment of their Jewish minorities. I'm just saying that suffering is relative. As bad as that sounds.

You have this North American/European notion that Ashkenazim are 'White' and Mizrahim are 'Arab'. That is preposterous. Ashkenazi Jews have a closer resemblance to light skinned Mizrahim than to the Eastern Europeans whom they lived next to. From watching your videos, assuming Mizrahim are Arab and Ashkenazim are white/European. You are very patronizing to them in the way you ask if they are discriminated. That is the accepted school of thought in America. Ashkenazim are a Middle Eastern people who lived in Europe, they are not European. the Moroccan Judeans are not ethnically Moroccan they have more in common genetically with Ashkenazim. Not to mention the fact that 50 % of Morocco is Berber and not Arab.

Ignorance. Most Moroccan Jews have Sephardic blood in their veins. And no you cannot see the difference in the last names , Atias , BenHaim , Madani , Azrouel are Sephardic names well attested in Spain before 1492. Most Jews who fled Spain to the Maghreb were not Conversos (Jews who practised Christianity in public and Judaism hidden) , therefore a large part of them kept their Arabic or Hebrew sounding names such as Elkabetz , Abecassis , Abergel , BenHaim , Hassan , Elbaz , Serror , etc...

I think you're right and the question was not very clear. It's a little naive to think nationalism was only caused by zionism. To imagine that arab nationalism and post-colonialism would have spared the jews from suffering. Armenians in Turkey, Maronites in Lebanon, Copts in Egypt, Kurds in Turkey, Syria,Iraq and Iran (not to mention Yazeedis...). The truth is that the middle east and islamic empires had some good days, but not so much in the last couple of hundred years.

I am using the term Mizrahim as a catch-all term- that is how it is used in Israel. Spharadim refers to those who were expelled from Spain during the Inquisition. and many kept elements of their culture (for example the Ladino language) or refer to themselves as Spharadim. Not all Moroccan Jews are Spharadim and most Spharadim did not end up in Morocco. Just easier to use the term Mizrahi. Arab Jew I use because that is how Muslim Arabs call them.

Thanks Corey for this amazing project. I wish I had the words to praise it as it deserves. When you ask people about zionism, I'd recommend making it clear whether you speak about the zionist movement or its main figures, or about the political agenda of creating and having a jewish country in the land of israel, or about the jewish connection to zion. the reason it is important is that while worldwide the first and second meanings are common (and I guess this is my personal meaning too even though I'm israeli secular jewish), among israeli jews the definition are quite mixed, and most of them tend to rather the second and third interpretations. most of isaelies still (very surprisingly) think that zionist is some ancient term that is rooted in the bible. in fact it is as new as the zionist movement. there is no root to the word "tsiyonut" or "tsiyoni" in the jewish tradition, yet the zionist story worked so well ;)

Oh, so Farhud in Iraq was an Israeli sabotage operation. Except there was no Israel yet. It was in 1941. It was lead by Hajj Amin al-Husseini. Did he also listen to Zionists? If so, did he listen to Zionists when he organized Nebi Musa riots (1920), Jaffa riots (1921), Hebron massacre (1929), Safed massacre (1929), the Great Arab Revolt (1936-39), Tiberias Massacre (1938) -- all in Palestine? I suppose the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 was also Israeli sabotage. Nice try.

And not that you are set to dispel the notions of the negative views about Israeli public opinion.

Suffering of Palestinians today is the result of their choice in a violent way. Jews who fled from Arab countries (900,000) did not cry, they built a life. Arabs who fled Israel decided to become refugees to date, countries where refugees live not care for them and give them citizenship, they use them as a bargaining chip against Israel. So there is nothing to ask them if they are suffering. They suffer, not because of Zionism, but because of their actions in the past

Actually, Yiddish is NOT a German dialect. It is a distinct Germanic language based on Medieval High German. It predates Hochdeutsch by 1000 years! The way a person's phenotype manifests itself is due to genetics and not based on a surname. PS Germans are extremely varied in looks since there has been admixture with other ethnicities.

he means there is no real dispute, and that applies broadly. there is nothing wrong, in any given moment. that is what he means. You choose to interpret it as good, bad, or whatever it may be. take any situation that you might deem as suffering.. for example, my sister, always got what she wanted. This used to infuriate me. But in the end, she has a shopping problem, a real hard time not getting what she wants, and it causes her suffering. she has debts, she has to stop buying as much things, and it causes her actual emotional pain. However, by not getting what I wanted all the time, I learned to appreciate what I had, and therefore do not suffer in this way. Life is deeply connective, the good can be found in any situation, and so can the bad. the only way to even know if something is good or bad, is to compare it to other things.. and it should be obvious why that's an impossible trap. There is no way to do that, life has a nasty habit of completely changing our entire perception of a situation with no more than a single detail. if a single piece of information can do that, imagine how much information you would need to come to some sort of real comparison.

Even in the case you don't know it or don't want to know: Jews were not the reason why our nazi forefathers killed them. They played an important role in helping Germany to become one of the most developed countries before WW I, and even during the Weimar hardships. It's simply ourselves who were jealous of them, and many of us still are. This Is why they spread anti-Semitic lies all over, instead of looking for peace and understanding.
