Mizuno S23 Wedges Finally a Wedge for EVERYONE Else! Its the redesigned ES21 wedge where Mizuno tried to centralise the sweetspot so its directly in the middle of the face. Wedges tend to have a sweetspot closer to the heel which is fine until you find that your own strike see's a middles to toe miss, hurting you by sapping valuable forgiveness away from miss strikes. Finally there is a playable good looking wedge that caters for the middle to toe striker.

I'm a scratch player, but play a reverse combo of 919 Hot Metal Pros bent 2-degrees weak and 6&5 HMB - even in these clubs the HMP are far better with toe strikes. I use to use the S18s but when worn out switched to the T20s then T22s - even tried replacing my 47 degree HMP PW with a T22 47 - but the loss of distance on ANY toe miss was insane - so took it out of the bag. I will be ordering a 47/53/59 in the new S23s - been waiting years for them.

Just ordered S23 and awaiting delivery. 4 handicap that tends to strike slightly on the toe side with wedges so this should be an improvement for me. Looking forward to the softer feel with these wedges, enjoyed your video and data sets.

I've ordered a pair last week. I always strike toe side of centre with my short wedges and find it very off-putting to address closer to the heel. I've also got the HMP JPX 923 which are more forgiving in the toe strike (thanks to your reviews).

Hv someone check your lie *s. Often with toe up, ie, too high lie* for your club length, Impact wil be toe side. My correction is to flatten by 1*. Check impact. Mizuno has done a great job with sole/toe configurations creating close to a 360* head weighting. Check lie *.

I got those (923 HMP) as well in december. As courses has been closed more or less since here in Denmark, I have yet to play them other than on Tracman courses (which is great). Absolutely love them 😍so far. Got fit into KBS C-Taper lite stiff. What lofts did you order, and did you go with the same shafts as in the 923's? I would be really interested in hearing how they blend in gapping and feel for you Allan 🤓?

Jay, just curious how would the S23s gap and blend in with the 923 HM/HMPs starting with the PW (42.5 loft) going into the S23 wedges (which starts at 46, then 50, and so on). Would think going from PW to the 50 would be too wide of gap (7.5 degrees). Maybe having both PW then 46, 50, 54 for HM/HMP players?

I miss on the toe, so this is great to know. Maybe a test on the new Cleveland rtx that has also moved the sweet spot more towards the toe is in order.

Strange as without knowing your miss pattern in strike terms, the slightly toe biased forgiveness of the JPX923 Forged would work extremely well with the centred CG S23. 🤷🤷👍🏻👍🏻

Love my S18 wedges, shame the S23 does not come in the same black finish as my S18s (which wears nicely to a slightly battered finish which I like) but that copper finish is a nice alternative. Even on the video the wedges sound soft. As someone who tends to hit wedges slightly off the toe these should be perfect for me - either that or I should get some more lessons!

Just a thought Jason. Is it possible to have the lie adjusted 2 degrees upright at your local club fitter prior to testing?
@zazhou

Kudos to Mizuno for centering the sweet spot! One presumes the end goal of club technical designers is to produce the perfect club head where there is no discernible performance difference in heel and toe strikes in left/right dispersion or north/south distance. If they ever achieve that, will the very skilled golfers who play with blades switch to this utopian technology?

I believe the USGA does put a maximum moi on drivers
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Жыл бұрын
I know they did move the needle for MOI a few years back after manufacturers requested a regulation needle change. MOI doesn't run linearly so the differential between say 2000 and 4000 has far more effect than a driver going from 8000 to 10000 moi units 👍👍
@sloswingspeed9535
@sloswingspeed9535 Жыл бұрын
There’s club head MOI and club MOI. Generally impact is a result of lie* vs club length vs swing path. Club MOI measured with a Golf Mechanix direct reading unit, is essentially length squared X weight.. it’s a dynamic club movement measurement vs static SW. more precise. With Jay’s posture I don’t see how he needs 2* up unless he stands up 😇😳

From your perspective, do you think the S23 are more forgiving than the Vokey SM8/9?
@chadpeace5852
@chadpeace5852 Жыл бұрын
I would be shocked if they are not more forgiving than the SM8. I have played the SM8 for two years and they are punishing on miss-hits especially on the toe side. I just ordered custom built S23s 54,50 with the KBS 2.0 Hi-Rev shafts. I need a little forgiveness but not a massive sole like the CBX has.

After doing some research, I'm hearing that not only is the sweet spot nearer the heel in wedges but also in blade irons. IF this is true... maybe this is for good reason?? I read that the worn spot on Sergio's irons is approximately 1/2 inch toward the heel.
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Жыл бұрын
After doing your research you are absolutely correct. CG trackers for years have worn their clubs in the area of effective middle. Modern day blades tend to have their CG closer to Lateral middle nowadays, however some still are very slightly heel biased. 👍👍

Mizuno has all the strike information from their fittings just like other manufacturers
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, Mizuno don't have strike information, only the information that is inputted in via their Bluetooth DNA Tool, manual tool users only still use the 5 data points x 3 for bend profile. Any physical launch monitor data isn't captured by Mizuno. Also when it comes to other manufacturers that don't use the tools that Mizuno have designed they have less average Joe swing data due to not having anything that all fitters use that report the data back centrally 👍👍

Jay, I’m torn between buying the 923hm 54 & 60 in the same shafts as my irons or 54 &60 in T22/23 … I love my Gap in 923 which is making me consider competing the set . Any advice welcome ?
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Жыл бұрын
In all honesty I would say that unless you have specific bounce or grind requirements, going the way of the standard wedges isn't a bad decision. They a loft gapped correctly to see similar differences in distance and when your short game gets better and you feel the need to experiment with different bounces or grinds, there will always be the T22 and S23s 👍

Also depends on firmness ( or not ) of your turf. Am in GA and currently we’re dealing with browned out, flat Bermuda. In 2 months it will be lush, green Bermuda . Many tapered shaft sets have 9i and Ws as same shaft. The 923 HM Ws are 54 and 58 or 59*, a good combination. Bounces are nominal and the $ is right, by about $20-25 per wedge. I play 921 HM Pros, with set Ws and same weight W shafts.

I’d stay with the 923 HM SW/LW wedges as bounces are nominal for your conditions and same shaft as GW. Same head whether HM or HM Pros. Work with that. That’s what I’d do. I do not carry a LW. SS is to slow.

@@AskGolfNut So 6mm from centre towards heel? Hmm, considering putting a dot on top to mark this point - and I am sure your estimation is better than mine! Your high efficiency was 10mm You have change my game - you opened my eyes to this aspect, and now I am acutely aware of how much softer a toe hit is. More importantly, I am not fighting being a little heel biased.

@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Жыл бұрын
Very much so. Everyone tries to hit the middle yet not all clubs have their effective middle in the middle so there is always a certain measure of efficiency drop when the golfer naturally moves around the face with strike. The trick is always to naturally move around a centred point wherever that centred point is. Irons also have their own natural CG points, I guess that's why I put the crazy amounts of effort in testing the drop offs on every new product. 👍

Only the outer coating. The Copper Cobalt is the finish on the exterior, its not an internal makeup of the design. They'll probably release a limited edition BLUE set, now that would also be nice....But my favourite is the Copper 👍
