Hey All;
Update! The watch sold on Ebay for $160.00. Didn't make a big profit on this watch, but, some! Yeah! Lets keep up the good work together!
I'm hoping that you are all enjoying the series "Junk or Gem". In this weeks episode, we are going to tear down a 16 size American Pocket Watch from the 1920. It is an Elgin, 17 jewel pocket watch movement, in an original Elgin RR (Railroad) case. The case is rare now as so many have been lost. While it is a common movement, check out the video and see if we are going to get this thing working and if we can make some money with it!

Nice work! My honest opinion is that all these vintage/antique pocket watches deserve attention if needed, unless they are just a basket case, but good for parts. 😉

Again sorry I'm late to the party, I love Elgin watches, I have two here in NC and another railroad grade in CA. What's funny is I'd love to get into this as a hobby, I have several wristwatches and such, but I feel as a beginner I'd feel more comfortable working on my one Elgin that's already broke and not service the one that runs lol. In fact I'm think of sending my good Elgin to you would be great if you filmed it. It's needs to be serviced and cleaned, and probably a new barrel spring as it feels really tight just after 3 turns on the key, yes key as it doesn't have a crown to wind, but a two keys to set time and wind. I've not seen another like it, I'm sure there are others. Need to find your service form I'd like to know what all would cost. It's a beautiful pocket watch, I only wear it to Weddings and Funerals, other wise it sits waiting and I take it out to run it at least every month sometimes twice a month as I enjoy it's loud ticking. Thanks for doing this and for reading, always a thumbs up and Cheers.

I enjoyed this video very much. Mr. Grande narrates very well and has a good speaking voice. The camera work is excellent, I was able to see the parts very clearly. A beautiful watch, I hope it finds a happy owner.

Try a movement holder and be a bit more careful handling this old movement.

Hi, new to your channel. I am a lover of pocket watches and carry a Bunn Special. Currently in getting serviced. I have a small collection. What do you generally charge for repairs or servicing? I know it depends on many things, looking for a general idea. I have someone that I regularly use, he gets backed up so I am looking for a backup and I like your work. I didnt hear you say what was wrong with this Elgin! I assume it was only in need of servicing? Thanks

Hello, do you remove the balance cap jewel when you clean? Or do you have luck cleaning the balance assembly as a whole? Thanks.

Great video,, but i have a question?? Do you not worry about lint or debree from your work mat getting on the parts, and moisture from your fingers?? I know they didn't have finger cots in the old days,, but i have sence to many springs and other parts efficted by moisture,, just wondering,, but great video!!

I always wear gloves when I do work on a watch, Since I’ve moved my store, I have a clean room. The videos that I film here, are actually first runs, and I clean them again. It is much easier to work on a watch when I’m not filming... Camera gets in the way... You’ll see that in my new videos, I’ll be wearing gloves most of the time, unless it is a junk watch that I use for examples only. Those tend to be worn out invictas most of the time... If you don’t have a clean room, one way to keep the debris down is to wipe everything off first, do not run your HVAC, and always keep Rodico on hand.

What oil do you use on the watch? Thank You for your time.
@watchesandjewelry
@watchesandjewelry 3 жыл бұрын
I use several different types. However good Swiss oils are the best and most recommended. You should have three types at a minimum. Spring oil for watch mainsprings. General purpose high quality oil for jeweled movements. Last a Swiss oil safe for plastic watch gears.

I am told by a very reliable source that the Elgin factory never manufactured cases, only movements. You'd go into a store, and purchase an Elgin movement and then select a case, made by another manufacturer, into which they would install it for you. I couldn't make out the markings inside the back on video, but that's what I've been told.

That’s true up to a point in time, but then watches were delivered from the factory in cases.

If it's not junk now, it will be junk after you've been working on it! I don't think I would want to own anything that you've had your ham fingers inside of.

Ok. Does it have any issues other than needing service and a mainspring? Such as broken parts? If not the charge is 115.00 to service and time it. If it needs anything else I will quote you before hand so that you can make your decision.

Lol. Watches are more durable than most people think. When I started years ago I used to hold every piece like it was some form of precious fragile life form. 25 years later and you learn.

You would be surprised at how many people say that. Funny or not. Nothing bothers me anymore. I’ve worked with other watchmakers and jewelers a long time. We all tend to handle parts differently. I do not take offense after doing these repairs so long. Lol. Funny story. I was trying to teach a woman how to retip a diamond once. She quit because she was afraid of putting a torch flame over a diamond to do the repair. Your comments are welcome and appreciated. The world needs more thick skinned people however. Enjoy. Let me know if you have questions and I’ll do my best to help.
