The part where he talks to the Dutch girl is amazing. Just the fact that when asked what she would like, she simply says, that she just wants to stay with this sweet lady. She doesn't really ask for anything.

@@Stevarooni I am assuming that she was evacuated during the Dutch famine or Hunger Winter (1944-1945) while Germany was still in occupation and not as a war refugee since most of those children were Jewish. It was a tough time for a lot of Europeans.

the little refugee orphan Dutch girl brought into play the humanity and human cost of WW2. Bringing a touch of home to the little girl, and a piece of self-celebration that this was why WW2 was fought to save the most innocent. There is a special and genuine truth to this scene.

The interaction with the Dutch girl is more wholesome than you'd think. She came from Rotterdam, which, post-WWII, she was orphaned. And when Santa asks her what she wants, she said nothing except to live with the nice lady that took her in.

If he speaks to her 'game over'. LOL What gets lost to our generation is the Dutch girl. This was post WW2 and the Dutch suffered greatly under Nazi occupation. If this had subtitles you would hear she doesn't want anything from Santa Claus and to be with her adopted mother. In the reboot the little girl was deaf.

Enjoyed your reaction! St. Nicholas was the bishop of Myra in present day Turkey and is noted for striking the heretical bishop Arius across his face at the Council of Nicea in 325 AD when Arius blasphemed that Jesus was not the Son of God but merely a good mortal man. Saint Nicholas as bishop was always devoted to children and to the poor and is regarded as the patron saint of children - especially in the instance when in his diocese three little boys were murdered and chopped up into small pieces and put into three small wooden barrels, through his intercession with God for them, he brought all three back from the dead. When a poor man could not afford a dowry for his three daughters so they could marry, and instead they would have to be sold into prostitution, he secretly came by on three successive evenings and threw small bags of gold coins through the opened vent window above the door so they could then each get married.

"Santa Clause" _(the old, white bearded, and well fed man, who's wearing red clothes with white trimmings)_ is an invention by the Coca Cola Company. Whereas St. Nikolaus _(from Myrna/Turkey)_ is a historical figure, that lived in the 3rd/4th century A.D. In Europe, St. Nikolaus goes by the name(s) of: "Nikolaus", "Sinterclaas", "Nikolo", Sint Niklas", "Saint Nicholas", Santiglaus", Saint Nicolas", "San Nicolas", etc... "Santa Clause" _(after being imported from the US)_ also goes by different names in Europe: "Weihnachtsmann", "Pere Noel", "Father Christmas", "Pai Natal", "Bappo Natale"...

I'm so delighted that you were able to see this wonderful film and react to it. It's very much of a New York story (my home). The actor portraying Kris (Edmund Gwenn) won an Oscar for his performance, and the Thanksgiving they were filming it (1946), he actually got permission to play Santa in the Macy's Parade (that was actual footage of him riding on the Santa Claus float). Oh, and one thing: a roasted goose was considered the most famous Christmas meal, and ham is right up there as well. (we always had Lasagna too)

I raised my kid celebrating Santa. She confronted and questioned me at an early age asking if Santa is real. I told her Saint Nicholas was a real man who lived a long time ago. He's remembered for caring about children and children loving him for his kindness. He died many years ago but he lives in the hearts of children. He will live on making our children's children happy for centuries to come. Is he real. Yes sorta, because he will outlive us all

St. Nicholas was of Greek extraction who lived in the 3rd century after the death of Christ. He became a bishop in a part of Asia Minor, now Turkey, where he was known for secret generosity and miracles. Growing up in the 1960s my parents never told us that Santa Claus wasn't real. They knew we would eventually discover for ourselves, but didn't want things ruined for the younger children. In those days kids were given much more room to experience things with friends and schoolmates.

One of the wonderful things about this film is that, upon first viewing, many people come away from it thinking the movie told us that Kris really is Santa Claus. But upon repeated viewings, you realize that it is left ambiguous. Not only ambiguous, but, it really seems that he is NOT Santa Claus - that he truly is a just a smart, clever, charismatic, kindly old man. (A smart, clever, charismatic, kindly old man who speaks Dutch and memorizes the toy selection of every store in NYC! 😄) Think about the address he put on his job application - he had been living in an Old Folks Home on Long Island. The doctor from the Home seems to know him well, indicating he'd been there for some amount of time. One would think that the "real" Santa Claus would be living at the North Pole with his reindeer, etc. And, you realize that every gift that anyone gets in the film is never something that he himself got them, through magic or building it in his workshop - he just cleverly pulled the strings that got them what they wanted! The "miracle" that happened in this film can be any number of things: (1) getting corporations to put the customers' needs first (2) letting Susan be a child (3) softening Doris' heart, (4) Kris winning his hearing based on the selfish decision of a lowly Postal clerk. But even with all that, there is still enough of an argument that can be made from the opposing view to say that he really was Santa - after all, for everything to work out the way it did, one might say there had to be some Christmas magic involved, and maybe it was all just Santa's chosen way of making it happen! Merry Christmas to you both!

The real Santa Claus is St Nicholas of Myra also known as Nicholas of Bari, Born on the 15th of March 270 AD, Patara, Türkiye ( of Greek desent ) and Died on the 6th of December 343 AD, in Myra, Türkiye He spent most of his life doing good and is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, unmarried people. A shortened form of the Sint Nikolaas, which is translated as the Dutch name for St. Nicholas became Sinter Klaas which in turn the English language corrupted down into Santa Claus The tradition of a Christmas tree in the house comes from Germany and made popular queen Victoria and price Albert in the UK I hope you are making parol with your daughter it's goid to keep up traditions maligayang pasko

Most people don't get the double meaning of the title but at the time of the movie, the two biggest department chains in America was Macy's and Gimbels. There business rivalry was the source of legend. People used to say for all sorts of occasions "Would Macy's tell Gimbels?" Each chain's flagship store was on 34th St. in NYC, a mere block away. So in one sense, the first miracle was the CEO's shaking hands in front of Santa and all the reporters. By the way, "Santa Claus" is a corruption of "St. Nicholas," an actual bishop in Turkey centuries ago. Supposedly, he snuck into this one house - ONE house - to leave money for the dowry of three daughters of a poor man. And according to Wiki: "Kris Kringle" comes from the German word Christkindl, meaning Christ child, because German children believe that the baby Jesus brings presents during the Christmas season."

It won 4 Oscars, including Best Picture. Maureen O'Hara and John Payne were top draws in Hollywood at the time. It also had a young Natalie Wood, who became a Hollywood legend. Unfortunately Natalie died under mysterious circumstances when she drowned on a boat that also contained her husband (Actor Robert Wagner) and her then love interest (Actor Christopher Walken). Yes, Santa Klaus is the German version of St. Nicholas, who was originally from Turkey. (Santa is Italian for "Saint"). While Saint Nick and the decorated trees came to America from Germany and England, Italian tradition celebrated the candies brought by La Bufana on Christmas Eve, gift were also given on January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany, celebrating in part the gifts brought to the child Jesus by the three Eastern Kings, or Magi (the Three Wise Men), which happens to be the twelfth day of Christmas.

To the original audience of this movie, the little Dutch girl "who had just come over" would have clearly been understood to be an orphan who lost her entire family during the War.
