They were great cars. Even the 1.3 L i had was fast for it's size. Rolled it into a field one friday night with 165k miles on the clock.

Its called Opel Kadett where im from, brilliant motors especially the GSI version.

the vauxhall mark 2 proved to be an extremely reliable and popular car of its age the engines were strong and easy to service yourself, the performance and MPG were good for the age of the vehicle shame that vauxhall (GM MOTORS) and others have decided that shareholders and profit margins matter more than the people who make there money the underdogs who graft to make a living and then buy their cars and then they wonder why we dont buy cars when we cant afford to

A current day laptop has far more power than Nasa's mainframes of the time- but puts into perspective what a great achievement putting man on the moon by a zinc-plated, vacuum-tubed culture (Acknowledgements to Star Trek) , My favourite Astra was the MK V.

Had the gte 16v. Went bloody well(on the arches) quick car. Handling did not live up to the power though.

@durosity Nope that is industry slang meaning it is easier to fix and the time it takes to service is shorter = cheaper. It's "service intervals" you are thinking of. :)

Initially it was a bit crap with the 1.8 litre, 8 valve, 115 bhp engine then Vauxhall/Opel fitted the 124 bhp 8 valve 2.0 litre engine, a couple of years later came the legendary 156 bhp 16 valve 2.0 litre GTE.

It's interesting to look at this ad and compare it to the "teasers" for the Insignia (the ads with the dam), altough this is significantly slower paced than the modern commercial I think the theme is very similar.

It would not be hard to get computers more advanced and more powerful than the Apollo space mission. The average scientific calculator in 1980 had more computing power. I had a 1990 16v GTE it was fantastic much more fun than the golf GTI which mum had

its a clone of GM opel, also the DAEWOO lemans in korea, i had several 1.6 sedan models they were good but i also had a 2.0 impact lemans coupe that car was great it had boge suspension larger brakes front &rear spoiler nice seats etc! but unfortunly a bus totalled it :( i still got a 1991 1.6 four door sedan that i had bought new it still works 290.000 kmh and runs strong with nice interior,i will restore her to its former glory!

MK2 Astra, not too bad, a fair few still about now, would be more if so many hadnt been stolen, did rust a bit but not as bad as the Viva or Chevette

not really slow to bend blast out, tiff dolt in dual blasted into the bend and thus fought against to control...maybe driving lessons should have been made standard to anyone buying one new......
