Thanks for a great video that delivered a big dose of nostalgia for me. I spent a week with the UK press car when the Limited was new, adding many enjoyable miles all over the country from Wales to East Sussex doing the location photos. A kind farmer near Eastbourne who persuaded his flock to congregate around the car for a photo op inspired the "Wolfsburg in Sheep's Clothing" title that headed my story in VW Audi Car. I also visited VW Motorsport in Hannover for my VW Power & Style book, where CEO Klaus-Peter Rosorius showed me how his team built road cars alongside the rally specials. Those were the days!

I own a Mk2 Madison in metallic gray, which also features those tinted rears. I think other colours got different tint too. I want to tune mine up a little bit, so I know how to repair it myself, since there are less and less of these cars around. I still can't get over how sleek the G60 looks though, I appreciate the clean design and those teal accents are to die for! It's so inconspicuous for such a beast! Love the video, keep these coming!

The Mk2 era was so different to the present day and what got me into the brand. The cars cost a bit more new but that extra budget allowed them to build them to last. Sadly someone worked out 'building to last' especially with minimal revenue for franchised dealer workshops wasn't a good business plan :)

Was a Country a Steyr Puch development like Panda 4x4? There is/was one/some in the UK but like a lot of these LHD specials, they eventually end up back in mainland Europe sadly. Some people over here do convert to RHD but in the case of a G60 Limited, this converted back and stayed in the UK as the owner wanted it to be correct (which I applaud). Makes overtaking awkward here but not impossible.

What a car, although personal preference I’d have preferred big bumpers but I fully understand that originality is a must when vehicles get to this age and value. Very strange that the top of the range back in the day looked like a driver on bbs rims 😁 Bit like the mk7 golf r seats 😂😂
@volkswizard
@volkswizard Жыл бұрын
It is weird that it was on small bumpers as big bumper GTIs were massively more desirable for many years after they came out and they hit the roads in October 1989 before this example did. Maybe there was some functional benefit? It's interesting that the 90 spec 16v lost its brake cooling ducts so maybe that's it?

I nearly purchased a G60 Limited that was converted to RHD, it was owned by a car tunning company. It was also featured in a few car magazines . Probably around 15 years ago It was sold for £7500. Think the new owner converted back to left hand drive. I ended up buying a nugget yellow corrado G60 which I still have. From outside it looks completely standard apart from sitting a little lower on Koni coilovers it's running 210 bhp and goes very well :) Great vid btw Andrew....
@volkswizard
@volkswizard Жыл бұрын
Thanks Gez! I know exactly where that car is (G410 NNV) It's with a collector in Northants and was at Stanford Hall this year. Indeed it was converted to RHD and then back to LHD. The tuner was R and A designs who sold bodykits for Mk1s primarily. Was it £7500 really? Crikey that's mental. A decent Mk2 GTI was £3k back then. Assuming your Corrado G60 is RHD (early ones were LHD) I think you made the right choice and LHD is a bit of a hindrance to enjoyment and feels really weird as a passenger when car is being driven hard. Well done for keeping Corrado for so long, great car especially in Nugget! This thread may be of interest re G410 NNV www.clubgti.com/forums/index.php?threads/golf-g60-limited-value.250055/page-2

Were these stupidly heavy? As a Golf with well over 200bhp and its not Cosworth quick (Sierra let alone the even faster Escort) In fact its only a little bit quicker than my standard Astra GTE 16 valve (0-60 in mid 7 seconds top speed 136mph) A Calibra Turbo with I believe 200bhp hit 60 in under 6 and topped out at 150mph. I remember driving a GTI 16 valve at the time I had my GTE 16v and remember that the Golf felt better put together but way, way slower. The Golf's 16v felt like it had no torque and even if you thrashed the living daylights outta it, still wasn't that quick.

Beautiful & stunning MK2 - I can forgive the rubbish headlights! Wasn't even aware of this particular Golf - I was only aware of the Rallaye G60. Lovely piece of automotive history 👌. Being a VW Motorsport car, one thing I was surprised at was the fact it's a 5 door shell - I'd have thought the 3 door would have more rigidity?
@volkswizard
@volkswizard Жыл бұрын
Glad you learned something too Andrew. 3 door being more rigid is a myth - it must vary from generation to generation but it's generally accepted because of the extra reinforcement in a 5 door, the shell is more rigid - think girders s flat thin pieces of steel and you get the idea. I suspect the 5 door was chosen because it was an exec express not an out and out hot hatch, worth noting it's not a GTI. Think Mk3 VR6 (though you could have a 3dr or 5dr one of those simply because series production allowed it). Another analogy is that Audi Sport are behind RS Audis but they aren't anything like their race cars - because marketing :)

As special as it might be from the low production number's perspective, I personally find it still not pretty (the small bumpers totally destroy the exterior appearance even if it gives it the "sleeper" look). Rather would own a Rallye Golf.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard Жыл бұрын
I get your point but people never complained about similar bumpers on the Mk1 Golf, it's an old car and now and they add to its classic looks rather than the 90 spec big bumpers which are similar to what we have today. The Rallye is a lot slower and the majority of people will just think it's a modified Mk2. It was 66% of the price though so you could buy 2 and get one free.

I remember reading an article about the limited. Of the 71 built, there were a few 3 door models. A specific figure wasn't quoted. It was the 3 door ones that were given to VW executives.The article also said these 3 door ones had air con. The article went on to say that a 3 door one was written off, so potentialy only 1 or 2 in existence.

There where a few bare shells also available. And there where actually more produced then the 71 claimed wich were kept by by vw motorsport.

@@johnkemp6652 Thanks, yes, that is correct. I may have misheard the video as I thought it said all Mk2s which is not correct. It would have been good if it had been ALL Mk2s as it would help prevent the problem if water ingress via the screen seal rotting the scuttle panel just below the screen!

@@Grahame59 my 87 gti has a few areas around the windscreen where it's starting to rust. I'll get it sorted next year. But the original seals are worth keeping as they still are better quality than the "new" quality today.

@volkswizard
@volkswizard Жыл бұрын
I think this is the auction one you are referring to, it made £43500 which was lower than owner wanted but the auction house said to remove reserve to get more bids which didn't work out. So when the German buyer didn't materialise he's pulled the sale as he really wanted £50k+ - buyer has to pay £2k on top of hammer price so it's not way out. Pricing them is tricky, there is one for sale with a less than perfect history for £70k, was £80k. They sell in Europe for £50k ish (60k Euro). With the weak pound and LHD chances are most will get exported in time sadly.

I can't get a better mic because I'm using an £80 Rode lavalier mic and their radio mic system, I'm not working in a studio so there is always going to compromise and I'm often under a lot of pressure to get the job done - in this video I was parked in a space where I could have been moved any any point. As for video quality, don't get many comments about that. Just as well as don't have the funds to invest in better kit, would rather concentrate on quality of content.
