UPDATE: Coding is required only on cars with "Auto-Start/Stop." Also, "Fleece" is the correct setting for an AGM battery.
My GTI's battery suddenly died after only two years and eight months. However, my extra electronics can be abusive to an otherwise "adequate" battery. I decided to replace the VW battery with a larger Group 48/H6 dual-purpose AGM battery. This video shows my process as well as how I coded the car to recognize the new battery. Here is the companion write-up on my website: stealthgti.com/2019/07/14/12v....

Is this really necessary? I swapped in an everstart maxx battery from Walmart size h5 identical size to the original battery and has been running fine. Should I still buy obd11 and reprogram the car?
@StealthGTI

When I made this video, I was unaware that programming is only necessary if the car has a BCM attached to the negative battery terminal. Mine does not. I *think* only the cars with automatic start/stop have this feature. I'm fairly certain that feature was not introduced until the 2018 models (in the U.S.). Over half of Mk7s will feature automatic start/stop by the time the Mk8 hits our shores as a 2022 model. So, this video still applies to most. That's what I'll tell myself, anyway. ;-) Also, "Fleece" is the appropriate battery selection for AGM batteries. Thanks for visiting.

Great video, just followed yours and a few others as guide to install DieHard H6 AGM battery, worked like a charm. Although I did not immediately do the obdeleven coding where I've seen a few others not do it and it has worked well, but I do intend to make the coding change. Thanks again. For reference my mk7 was picked up in October of 2015 and oem battery lasted until now, only about 55k miles on the odometer though.

Tried to move the bracket around that the ground is bolted to and nothing doing. Had to return the X2 and thinking maybe the 2016 Autobahn GTI wont fit a group 48 batter.

@Ken Estrada no everything works perfectly. It fills the whole battery tray in my car, so it's not the smaller one for sure. I have the auto start-stop feature so my battery was already larger since I had all the electronics and the upgraded sound system and all that.

@@vitaflo - Excellent! I hope you're already familiar with 208H use. I borrowed a 208H when I was first exposed to D-STAR and found it frustrating, mostly because I didn't understand what I was doing or already know how to use the radio (I was a Yaesu man at the time). Operating mobile wasn't going to happen! HAHA! The newer Icom radios are more intuitive, IMO, especially the 5100 with its touchscreen. Regarding the antenna mount, have a look at my write up at stealthgti.com/my-gti/communications/adapting-the-factory-antenna-hole-to-nmo/, if you haven't already seen it. Great video. Agree with your sentiment re the quality of the batteries now being provided in new builds - quality versus cost. Our 2006 1.9TDI Mk5 had the original conventional wet plate battery from new until December 2020 when it was replaced. Good value, performance and longevity. Our 2017 2.0DGT Mk7 with a EFB+ battery now only holds bare minimum charge and on short drives will only give a few starts before it shows signs of distress. We do not have any additional electrical or mechanical items fitted, all as per OEM on purchase. Battery should be an AGM for the stop / start tech that the car has per all the info I have reviewed. Certainly quality compromised for cost reduction. AGM being fitted later this week.

Thanks for the guide! I do have a question that hopefully you can answer. I just installed a new DieHard 48H6 Gold into my 2017 GTI SE. NOWHERE does it list the AH, so I can properly input that into OBD11. I've even been talking with the DieHard support all morning, and they still can't find it. The battery that came out was listed at 60AH, and I'm assuming this one would have a slightly higher AH number. My Euro mechanic says not to worry if I don't have it, and nothing is going to blow up if that number isn't spot on, but I'd still like to have things done properly, regardless. I did go in and change the serial number so my car knows there is a new battery installed. How'd you find your AH number? It's not listed on my battery and no one at AutoZone or DieHard can tell me. Or, will I be okay to just put that at 63 or 65 and be ok?
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 2 жыл бұрын
I've found formulas that result in inconsistent results. One "rule of thumb" is to divide the reserve capacity, which is 115 minutes on your battery, by two, which results in 57.5 Ah. A more complicated formula spits out 48 Ah. That seems low for a group 48 battery. But I don't think it matters. After publishing this video, I learned that the OBD entry only matters on car with a BMS. If your car does not have an auto-start/stop function when you stop for intersections, then you very likely do not have a BMS. I'd leave the stock value and call it a day. Thanks for visiting!

Great video! What would have happened if you weren’t able to code the car? Would the car have still run? I have a 2017 GTI (US model) with a dead battery. People (even VW techs) are saying “just put the new battery in and drive it.”
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 5 жыл бұрын
Nicholas - Consider the possibility that some "people (even VW techs)" are not aware of new technology. For example, I saw MANY old school recommendations given to TDI drivers that were simply terrible advice for a modern turbodiesel: everything from fuel additives to oil selection to using the "mark and pray" method for timing belt changes. Back to the battery, I think the best case is that your car is old enough to not have the Battery Monitoring System (BMS). If that's the case, then it is correct to "just put the new battery in and drive it." If your car has BMS, then you'll need to code the car if you replace it with anything other than an identical battery. Otherwise, the car may not recognize the different capacity or technology to charge as needed. Here is an example, albeit for an Audi A8: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f7BxhsaYm7DWiX0.html. @StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 4 жыл бұрын
Joe - It's tough to say whether it is your battery or your alternator. I *THINK* you'd get a warning light if it was your alternator. If that's not the case, I'd suspect your alternator as much as the battery. Most major auto parts stores will test your battery for free. Good Luck!

Scott do you use the OBDeleven PRO Edition or the OBDeleven Standard Edition? One review says that you can buy Standard version and then pay for the Pro Code in the app later for much less than the cost for the Pro version. I have a 2016 GTI that needs a battery and am wondering how much reprogramming is really necessary for a standard lead acid battery. I was planning on going with a higher capacity H6 with 730 CCA or the H5 with 650 CCA. I think that the standard VW battery is under 550 CCA. Your thoughts?

Milan - I use the Pro Edition. I've been recoding and adapting my VWs with VCDS long enough to know that I wanted to go straight to Pro. I don't think you'll lose any stored settings. The reason for recoding is to inform the Gateway module that there's a new battery so that it resets its "learning" or charging behavior. Battery change and OBD2 coding. The existing battery coding is stored in flash ram, so if you disconnect the battery this information is NOT lost. For ALL cars - this has nothing to do with BCM being there or not. If you replace like-for-like, that is same amperage and same battery technology, you ***DO NOT*** have to code the new battery as the computer will have the correct coding in place. If you change battery type, e.g. EFB to AGM or amperage, e.g. 69Ah to 75Ah then you ***MUST recode***. Changing battery type is especially important as the way the battery is used and charged is different and the car's computer needs to know. If you change EFB to AGM and do not tell the computer it will treat the AGM battery as an EFB - this is VERY bad as it will not use or charge the battery correctly.
@StealthGTI
@StealthGTI 2 жыл бұрын
Thank for the note. I've read that even for like-like replacements, changing the "serial number" signals to the ECU that a new battery is in service, which changes the charging profile a tad to account for new battery behavior. That could be BS, but it reads well. ;-)

Seems like it should, so long as it has the bottom clamping area. I honestly don't know if "Group 47" describes a preset size, mounting method, pole position, capacity, or all. If it describes all aspects, then you should be good. Just make sure you get the polarity correct. Some have messed it up since the positive wire is no longer red, as it was in the olden days. @@shishuali4821 That's right, VW calls (standartd) AGM battery "Fleece", and that "binary-AGM" option is for different spcific type of AGM batteries, so the correct value for AGM batteries (...unless on the battery is differently specified), is "Fleece". P.S. the most important part of this coding, is cahnging at least one figure of the serial number...that thells the BCM to 'forget' the previous values, and 'accept' the new ones, since there's a new battery fitted, which need to be 'learnt'.
