The MKb-42(H), or Maschinenkarabiner-42 (Haenel), was the first production iteration of the German Sturmgewehr. It was chambered for the then-new 8x33mm kurz cartridge, and fired both semiauto and full-auto from an open bolt. Approximately 11,000 of these were made before production changed to the closed-bolt MP43.

I had found on ww2 battlefield in Kurland pocket in positions of Wehrmacht 563. Volksgrenadier division- STG mag- there was stampings ''MKB42 u MP43'', still had 18 rounds loaded in mag, probably was dropped due damage from shrapnel.

Martymoar I thought the same thing lol. The floor buffer walks through the doors and sees a man sweeping the room with a historic rifle at a rapid pace, his eyes lock with Ian’s and both men observe a look of terror in the others. Ian blushes and in relief of the awkward tension both men burst out laughing at the absurdity of their situation. Just another day at the auction house.

+Jone Cuntapay On the other hand, he had good reasons for some of his wacky behavior in regards to military decisions. He'd learned in WW1 that the brass and rear escelon people were essentially in a different war than what was really going on. And, seeing himself as a frontline soldier, had issues with them and thought he knew the right way to go about things. The military command even in ww2 was for the most part filled with "veterans" from ww1 who had been artillery officers or aides to generals far behind the front. So he often overrode their decisions based on that or personal dislike and opinions; unfortunately for him, this was a much different kind of war.

My SF company commander had one of these in his personal German weapons collection some 40 years ago. He could find no ammo though. I did a little research for him and came up with the idea of resizing and trimming .308 Win brass. We ordered sizing and trim dies from RCBS and used M-60 blanks (7.62 NATO) to size, trim and ream. What we had after that was a primed case ready for loading. I forget where we got the load data from 40 years ago but we loaded Hornady 125gr pointed soft point bullets. Went to the range and tested it. No pressure signs or any other problems, took two belts of M-60 blanks and made ammo. The gun shot well for years then he went through a divorce and all the German weapons were sold off.
@ForgottenWeapons
@ForgottenWeapons 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, making it from 7.62 NATO is not a bad solution. Today, 8x33 is made by one or two companies - Prvi does it, and I think FNM in Portugal as well.

What a fantastic sighting system to have for a gun in WW2! I would sure feel pretty good having that at my disposal against mostly bolt guns and garands. I was apprehensive about seeing that optic because I know how narrow the view is, I would feel safer with iron sights, but having both is fantastic. It's kind of a bummer that it fires from an open bolt though, especially with an expensive scope attached, kind of a waste of precision.

That ZF (Zielfernrohr) scope looks awfully small to be really effective. I read a book about German snipers in WW2 and from what I remember they all hated the small ZF-41 to the point that they just threw it away and used the ZF42 instead.
@ForgottenWeapons
@ForgottenWeapons 10 жыл бұрын
The ZF41 was not designed to be a sniper's optic, but rather a DMR (designated marksman) optic. It was meant to give you just that extra bit of capacity to take more precise shots. In that role, it's didn't fare too badly. However, because of the lack of larger scopes, it was pressed into service for snipers. They (predictably) hated it because it wasn't intended to do the job they needed it to.
@diasirea
@diasirea 10 жыл бұрын
Forgotten Weapons You discussed the optimistic 800m range on scope. While a precision hit with that rifle/scope may be extremely difficult, landing bullets in that area is not, and while optimistic for hitting anything specific, dumping bullets in general area helpful for suppressive and harassment firing, at least that's an old WW2 vet told me about max sight setting on M-1. ( He related an episode where Germans were out of practical rifle range, he said about 1/2 mile away, w/ US troops seeing them through binoculars, sunning on a wall. Several of his men set Garand sites, simultaneously emptying clips. Apparently some bullets landed near them since GIs watched them scatter.)

diasirea 800m might be somewhat feasible for the .30-06, 8mm Mauser, .303 British, or something like that, but for 8mm Kurz? We're talking about a round that's weaker than 7.62x39, and even THAT round would be considered vastly underpowered for reaching 800m. An SKS-45 would be very lucky to make hits at 500m on a perfectly still, standing, man-sized target. For 800m? You'd probably want to bring volley fire back lol That sounds like what the Americans did, except they had 150gr going 2800 ft/s. An SKS-45 would have something like 123gr going maybe 2400-2500 ft/s at best. The 8mm Kurz bullet would be going perhaps 2200-2300 ft/s. By the time they reached even 600m, they'd be going subsonic. 8mm Kurz might be as little as 800 ft/s at 600m, so at 800m it'd probably be ballistically weaker than .38 Special at the muzzle. Even M855 from a 20" M16A4 barrel would be lucky to maintain the ballistics of .22lr at 800m. M193 5.56 at 800m would be undoubtedly weaker than .22lr at the muzzle. M2 Ball .30-06 though... 150gr going around 1500 ft/s won't be a very good time, certainly a worse time than 123 or so grains going perhaps 700-800 ft/s.

You know, I almost got irked when you said that the MKb was "the original German Sturmgewehr," but I clasped my hands together and finished the video to make sure you covered the main points before making an ass of myself. Got to say well done on the main points, though some more minor things that you didn't mention were the changes to the grip shape, front sight, safety, and addition of a stacking lug at the end of the gas tube. Great video, that rifle is a true piece of history and, in my opinion, much more beautiful than the StG-44.

The biggest problem with this rifle was actually ammo availability. They produced more rifles than the ammo logistics could keep up with so some soldiers had to ration about 35 rounds of ammunition per engagement (35 rounds being average availability) as it wasn't being produced in enough quantity. This was an issue through out the entire war and got even worse towards the end as factories were bombed.

Mihalis Benko AK-47 a MILDLY upgraded version of the MKb42? Um, NO. The AK-47 design is different internally and superior is every way except in accuracy. Apples and Oranges. The AK-47 was developed seperately and later, and only the general arrangement of the gas piston and overall outward appearance are similar to the German assault rifles. I own both an AK-47 and an MP-44. They are years and worlds apart in many ways. The AK is far more reliable, lighter, shorter, and by far simpler, with a rotating bolt locking design instead of the German tipping block design. If you want to see other examples of the German bolt locking system, look at the SKS, and a variation of the same system in the Czeck vz 58. People often think that the StG-44 rifles led to directly to the AK-47. It's just not so. They share a few common features, but not much. The AK is an EXCEPTIONALLY clever mix of many features from several older guns combined with some new features, all carefully blended into a simple design. That's why it's so popular.
@Antiochus45
@Antiochus45 9 жыл бұрын

What you say is true, but I think he could have been a bit more clear. He said it was a mildly upgraded version, which is not the same as saying both guns were designed to fulfill the same role.

Mikhail Kaleshnikov has always been rather transparent and earnest about his influences. In one interview he compares himself to Marconi "inventing" the radio. Which is to say he admits he didn't create anything brand-new he just put existing ideas together in a way that made them more usable/popular. He has always maintained that the operation on the AK is most closely borrowed from the M1 Garand. Which it looks nearly identical too, just flipped upside down. While the saftey comes from the Remington Model 8 and the cartridge was already standardized prior to his involvement. The intermediate cartridge is really the only thing that the AK shares with the STG/MKb designs, and again, that was already decided before Kalishnikov had any design approved.

the german luftwaffe paratroops due to their jump harnesses had to dive forward from the plane and were unable to carry a heavy weapon.they were dropped in canisters seperately.paratroops were used to secure airstrips and other strategic points and their experience on crete was that by the time they had mustered collected weapons etc the enemy knew they were there.what they needed was overwhelming fire to supress what would be a far larger force until relieved. the k98 didnt produce enough supressive fire and the mp38 etc did not have the range or stopping power needed.basically each man was expected to do the work and of ten and needed a weapon that was relatively light but would punch rounds out like a lmg especially if you had everyone firing together and could supress the enemy at a distance.crete cost the germans many casualties due to inferior weaponry for the situation.it was their superior training that enabled them to hold out and beat the numerically superior allies had they had say the fg 42 their task would have been much simpler.

I just realized the area near the stock is identical to the same area on the G3 which of course was designed by the same people with nearly the same action... That gun was 8 years ahead of its time with that rolling block action in a stamped gun.

Actually, the MKb/MP/StG series of rifles used a much different locking system than the G3. I have a video on the origins of the G3, and how the StG-44 led to it: Last Ditch Innovation: The Development of the Gerat 06 and Gerat 06H Rifles

Forgotten Weapons But weren't some of the people who built the StG44 later working for Mauser on the Gerat 06, and then of course later on the G3 ? If you look at the part were the metal meets the stock, it is external identical on those 3 rifles, it looks identical on the Stg the Gerat and the G3, is what i meant. Not that the G3 had the same action as the StG 44, but that it was designed by (more or less) the same people. I'm sure you'll agree that the G3 was ahead of its time, it would have been a lot further ahead of its time if NATO hadn't forced the designers to use an outdated cartridge.

Douilleur Lamagouille Yes, some of the same people were involved, and the external layout of the guns is the same. The locking mechanism came from some experiments with the G43, though, not further development of the StG series. As for being ahead of its time, I think that the early CETME variants (along with their rather interesting cartridge) are more innovative than the G3.

Am I the only person who thinks this thing looks nicer than the subsequent Stg. 44? Especially with that scope, it's just a really cool looking gun.

If I could have any historical firearm to hang on my wall, it would be one of these. It just looks so interesting and different from anything else at the time, especially from the side.
