The same thing happened with my old Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and J8. You don't need to panic at all. Your phone will just be fine as long as its battery doesn't get punctured or damaged. Avoid charging the battery, and take it to the nearest service center as soon as possible to remove the swollen battery. Don't attempt to do it by yourself if you don't have any experience.

Marcus, you just saved me my life savings with this short, here's how... watched this video, checked two Samsung note 5's that I had put away in a drawer because the screen broke and the gas leaked out and the screens went blank and I never got around to getting em repaired.. Lo and behold, swollen batteries on the both of em, and one literally almost seemed like it was ready to pop.. I immediately took them out and discarded them. The cabinet was made of wood, and right above the section where these almost-about to explode phones were placed, were my government savings certificates that had my entire life savings tied up in them... The reason I hadn't noticed or seen them from all this time was, 1 the light doesn't get there and they were at the back under a couple of other phones and wires.... Keep being awesome man... and thanks for the save... !!!

This is quite unfortunate. As far as I know it happens much more with older Samsung phones and because they are pretty nice and popular phones it's quite unfortunate since it would be nice to have a collection of you're old phones to see what you're old phone used to look like and also it could become a collectors item at some point

My Samsung batteries have been swelling up ever since the s5. Back when they were removable I was going through so many with external chargers and yeah they’d swell up considerably after not too long. That was around the time people were scared of laptop batteries being on airplanes so I was always evaluating the condition of my batteries lol

I think it depends on whether you keep charging them regularly after you stop using them. I still use an old S8 regularly and there’s no sign of swelling in it. One charge usually last 2-3 days with light use (reading ebooks/playing music/watching some KZfaq). However my sisters old A53 which she stopped using about 2 years ago and hasn’t used since, has inflated significantly and pushed the screen completely off. I had an S6 years ago and stopped using it for a while, as I’d been using the S8 instead. The battery never expanded but after being left uncharged for about 8 months or more, when I did charge it the battery would last only a couple of hours before dying. But having said that I’ve never had any issues with battery expansion on the iPhones I’ve used. The iP4 continued working fine, then gave it to a friend when I upgraded to the iP6. The iP6 worked fine until the infamous battery drain fiasco, but worked as well as ever after replacing battery. Then I changed from iP6 to my current iP12 about 18 months ago. But the ONLY reason I did that was because of the number of apps that stopped working after numerous iOS updates. Basically 60% plus of my most used apps stopped working or didn’t work like they should.

We deployed dozens of iPad Airs and Pros as kiosks at my previous employer. Every single one lost the wifi card right before the battery began swelling. They went full spicy pillow right after warranty like clockwork. If you notice your iPad can't see any networks and is hotter than normal, please check if the case is starting to form a gap! This became a massive fire hazard for us. The joke with local techs maintaining these was that the iPads were "going full Samsung" and eventually we had to say they were going full Apple; we had more iPads blow up in our system than the entire Samsung tab fiasco reported in the news.

@@blu1666 I'm in current possession of a Samsung phone and never owned an iPhone, chill. When a phones battery begins to expand, there is a REASON the company goes crazy trying to get it back. It's a hazard against your life and components in the phone have been expanded and broken. Can you replace everything broken? Yes, maybe. Should you? I wouldn't recommend it because the toxic shit inside the battery has leaked onto the phone, which can cause problems to your health down the line due to continued use. And even if you replace the battery, previous leaks toxins and components can affect the new battery and STILL cause an explosion. Long story short. Just (safely) throw it away and get a new one.

Also happens if you try to keep your phone over 80% charge. The heat from charging causes degradation too and could cause spicy pillows. Also unseen damage from drops to the battery (back of the phone, even in a case) as well could up the susceptibility of the battery being a spicy pillow. Yep I had to take a Motorola in for a battery replacement, but a broken (probably shorted) usb port stopped me from making the spicy pillow worse. (That usb port is also getting replaced. The fresh battery exposed the issue with the charge port) lol The screen survived longer than the battery/charging port on all of the Motorolas I used/am using. To clarify about dropping the phone on its back (where the battery compartment is), nothing in the phone is causing damage, I'm talking about the shock of the drops because that's still battery trauma. I feel like those cases that claim to be shock proof aren't really shockproof, more like shock resistant, but they advertise them as shockproof. I believe the phone within the case can take a certain amount of drops before the shock resistance stops working. I kind of wonder the type of shock those cases were designed to take, especially if they have screen protecting lips/phalanges.

This almost never happened with removable batteries and even when it did replacing it was easy and took 5 seconds with no risk or danger. This push for internal batteries , that seems to have started from iPhones and now nearly every manufacturer has followed suit has created this problem
