4 is a great band. I spend 99% of my operating time on 4M. It's a quiet band. It's an enthusiasts band. It takes a little dedication. You'll go days on end without hearing anything. Other days here will be quite a few. Decent antennas are a must. Home brew Slim Jims are very popular for vertical use. 4FM has better range than 2M FM. 4 is better mobile than 2M. Get on 4. Encourage others to get on 4. Call.... 70.450 is the FM calling frequency. Sit on there and call. Don't just sit listening. If everyone listens, no one gets heard.

Yes 4m is better mobile unlike 2m and 70cm where the signal is choppy, 4m is more stable mobile

We are always do a true to life video, without pre-scheduled qso's or older footage. The best way to get a true experience is to switch the radio on and see what happens. Sometimes its busy and other times..........

Didn't realise that the FT710 has tune enabled on 4m, sadly the FTDX10 doesn't have that option

Local chap reads the GB2RS bulletin on 4m, and a few will respond later. I can listen to this on an FT5D but not TX.

Why is it that people only come out for contests? Spend shedloads of money on radio gear to just send 59 locator 73. The whole idea of amateur radio is to talk to each other..

I don’t think that is true. I was on last Sunday for an hour and worked 4 stations. If there isn’t much happening in your area then put something together and get more stations on, the more you promote it the better it will be.

In DL we can work with 25W ERP on horizontal Antennas only. The QRG is only from 70,150-70,210 MHz. Records must be kept of the transmission operation with the following information: date, time, frequency, type of modulation, power, antenna direction if necessary, call sign of the other station upon contact, signature of the call sign owner. Use is limited to fixed amateur radio stations and may only be carried out by holders of a license to participate in the Class A amateur radio service. No remote operation, no Repeaters etc.etc :-))) So use it for DX keeps me smyling a little bit. Regards and 73´s DH1KJ 😋

Agree, always worth a call out on 4m,but likewise here near Luton, I very rarely get any response from a call... Antenna space is limited here, so don't very often put one up for 4. When I do I do call alot on FM or CW. Have had a couple of QSO's through the Tring parrot - an unusual experience hearing yourself being relayed! There is a net in the Milton Keynes area, but can only get a couple of the participants from here.

As a plug to Tim G5TM KZfaq channel there Tim has a flower pot design for 4m. Very compact and low cost. Provided you have a tree or fibre glass pole handy try it out. I will over the next few weeks. Regards steve

Hi Tony, thanks for the overview. Yes, 4m is a great band. My Icom radios (7100 and 7300) seem to be rather deaf on 4m in locations where local terrestrial noise is not an issue. Natural/sky-noise on 4 is not very low, so a low-cost pre-amp should cure the lack of sensitivity. Maybe worth adding a 70 MHz pre-amp to the ML&S product line? 73! Tim

There is a little bit of activity around the West side of London / Reading area, in particular on Sunday mornings. I do listen to the calling frequency but would have just missed you as I live very close to Heathrow. The parrot does work but it’s not a very strong signal around West London. Always best to listen to the Tring SDR if you use it as the parrot is close by to it.

What hardware / software setup do you use in order to capture the ft-710 display in full screen on the computer? Can you also interact with it from the PC or is it view only?
@G7LJL-Steve_Murton
@G7LJL-Steve_Murton 5 ай бұрын
The FT710 has a dvi display output to a dvi monitor or you can use HDMI monitor provided you use the correct dvi to hdmi lead. Check with the radio supplier to confirm suitable lead. The FT710 has usb connections to link a mouse directly. This able to manipulate most of the controls via the mouse except band changes and internal tuner there may be others that will only be controlled from the rig . Hope this helps.

VHF TV broadcast frequencies?
@SSN515
@SSN515 5 ай бұрын
VHF TV channels 4 and 5 were / are on those frequencies. As I recall, Glen Zook W9??? (SK) put in a petition to the FCC back in 2010 to open it up for Ham use, but they disapproved it in 2014 because they said some community and low powered broadcasters still used it.
