@@whywhy3289 Actually it's nothing like a teacher-child interaction. Both parties here are adults and one isn't responsible for the welfare of the other. But anyway, yes, of course umpires can be wrong. That's not the point. Right or wrong, you don't argue balls and strikes. It's one of the most sacrosanct rules in baseball. You just don't do it -- and if you do, the ump has every right to eject you. As for your other point, I agree that umpires should be held accountable for their actions. And they are. The league can and does punish umpires for inappropriate actions on the field -- usually by means of a suspension for a certain number of weeks or months. It doesn't happen often, but it can and does happen. As for protesting ball games, as Mark says, that recourse was done away with this year. It's not a huge loss, though. Since 1910, more than 175,000 Major League games have been played. The number of games protested in that time? 15.

The point of the ump is to be professional and unbiased, with total knowledge in the field. Making them ideal for making the call. Games are long and boring as is do they rly need to debate everything on the spot? 10 hours for one game? Nty.

@@salvest3rr I agree, they are SUPPOSED to be professional and unbiased. But when you watch this it is extremely plain to see that he made the call because he was ticked off and not because of the infraction. Men are fallible and make mistakes. This guy was wrong and should be made to account for it.

The umpires have some grand union. This is what you see when unions have their pull and running amok over other collective associations. When the current World umpires association superseded the previous one in 2000, that's when this mess really started happening. Many of the previous MLB umpires lost their job prior to that year as a part of a collective bargaining agreement strategy that backfired, and now we see a new regime that just totally blows.

Its a tenuous relationship between ump and pitcher...he can give you all the borderlines and beyond or give you nothing but center of the plate...pretty insane and I'm sure many a bet has been won based on how the umps "seeing" the zone that day

Jason Varitek on the Josh Beckett one against the Twins where he yelled "GOD DAMN IT" would have fit on here.

Nobody can “show up”an ump, but an ump can do his strike three ringup dance to show up a hitter
