The year i was born. Crazy because 5 years later is when my memory really was of use. So i never remembered this stuff its little weird to think i was alive when tv looked like that. Everythinng was so different in just a 10 years time.

Could be argued it was most selfish record. 100% fact that in 13 yrs. There had to be a game or 20 where he wasn't feeling great and a replacement would've given team better chance to win.

Ripken added 501 games past the record, taking the day off on my 26th birthday. I was shocked he stopped. No one will play 16 straight seasons and not only be good enough to play at a major league level for that long but not get hurt and be a starter. It wont happen. 2632, is like 511 wins. Unattainable by anyone but the person that set it

The Braves weren't the team of the early 90s, either. Toronto won two WS to Atlanta's one.

When Costas said it, it was true to that point. Only a half decade, although Toronto had two WS titles. But, I agree with you. Costas should never have said that. He should have said that- "After 30 years of crying and trying , Atlanta Braves fans and their team finally have their World Championship."(pause, show the players' on-field dogpile celebration and crowd going bananas, then Costas continues)..."The Braves defeat the Cleveland Indians in this WORLD SERIES SIXTH GAME HERE IN ATLANTA, 1-0 tonite, and the Atlanta fans with this first utmost crowning of the Braves four year excellence have their first ultimate title, first in any Major Sport, with finally.. the Atlanta Braves early 90's success rewarded completely in Georgia tonite."...(bring in the analyst..., after the analyst, Costas goes down for Hanna Storm or Keith Olbermann/ UECKER? to do quick field interviews, of two players', tops. Then back to Costas to tell fans the Braves locker room is coming up next..option spots/ads or not, then to the locker room if spots in about a minute of recap, if no spots, to the lockerroom in four minutes..with whomever, UECKER, Olbermann, Storm, whomever, then after the trophy is commish awarded to Cox, Schuerholz, and Turner, interviews are done, and then before the trophy is brought outside to be celebrated by players and fans..then spots are played..and then back to HANNA STORM, and then just outside the Indians lockerroom to OLBERMANN/UECKER or whomever, and then after to spots, then after to COSTAS AND ANALYST MORGAN for wrap, and then to HANNA to wrap and intro. video W.SERIES six games' highlights musical and announcers montage with rolling credits and out).. There, that is my directing job..

Agreed...I'm a huge Atlanta fan watched every game as a kid on TBS but the 96-01 Yankees were best team of my lifetime. Before Giambi and all the huge FA contracts. Paul O'Neil, Tina Martinez, Posada, Jeter, Brosius, Bernie Williams, David Cone, Pettite, David Wells, Wettland and of course Marino Rivera

And Cleveland, who had the best record in all of baseball, didnt have homefield in any of the three playoff rounds. It should have been Boston (2 seed) vs Seattle (3 seed) on the Division Series with Boston having homefield, and Cleveland (1 seed) vs Yankees (wild card) in Division Series with Cleveland having homefield

I wonder why it’s never mentioned that Ripken played designated hitter several times on his way to break Gehrig’s record the DH wasn’t around when Gehrig did it he had to play it all in the field and at the plate so to me it’s not the same thing it’s way easier to be in the lineup and just hit 3 or 4 times and not have to play in the field Gehrig didn’t do that to me Gehrig will always be baseballs real iron man not Ripken

Funny, I just commented to some d-bag praising him. It could be selfish to your team if you aren't 100% a replacement would do better. I forgot about that. They just DH him, he bats, sits down for an hour, hits again ect. Lol

it's not mentioned because it's not a true statement. Baseball Reference has him listed as being the DH 25 times in his whole career, 24 of which were in his final two seasons, 2000 and 2001. Never DHed during his streak. *shrug*

@@gadzooks5398 Plus, DH wasn't used at that time the way it's used now. It was hitters that were a liability or couldn't find room on the field. It wasn't, "Let's give him a DH day, he needs rest". If you had a starting position, that was your job for the season, including DH. They didn't start doing the rest thing until the 2000s and there wasn't a plethora of utility guys until recently when they put 12+ arms in the roster.

I am going to tick off Ripken fans but, I know that while he may have the 2632 games mark in the recordbook, there was one record Gehrig has that Ripken did not get: Everytime Gehrig's team was scheduled to play a regular season game, except for weather or anything out of his hands, Lou played and did not miss a contest. Cal Ripken did not do that. There were about 70-75 games that were wiped out due to the strike/lockout, counting the end of 1994 and beginning of '95, and Cal voted with his players' association not to play them. It makes no difference who was right or wrong, or both, players and/or owners; no, CAL had a scheduled game that was not weathered out, or postponed because of anything beyond his control, and he voted through the power given voluntarily by him to his players assoc., lawyer and player reps, to abide by their decision..the de-facto refusing to play the next scheduled game in August of '94. Gehrig did not have that luxury. Every game his club was slated to play, he had to beat injury(major injury back then or you did not sit) to participate 2,130 consecutive scheduled games inside the season= 2130 consecutive gamedays scheduled on all days of each concerning regular season, barring weather and any events out of his control. CAL RIPKEN did not do that. And, this wasn't his state or city shutting down sporting events because of a virus, he did it through his own volition when he did not have to do that. So, Ripken may be listed as the record holder, but that is limited to a narrower definition in my opinion. And, what is indisputably so, it was inside a period of years of scheduling where RIPKEN was scheduled to play, but did not of his own volition, play. .. We are talking inside two seasons, too. Sorry, but on the whole general sense, CAL RIPKEN did not meet the real challenge, even as he met the record book's convoluted definition... I like Cal, and it was great for bringing back baseball to fans, but he did not fully break that record.. Still held fully by LOU GEHRIG..indisputably.. See, I don't see the difference in Ripken retiring in Aug.'94, and coming out of retirement in '95, and having, which is what would happen, the record cease and start over... If you do, tell me the difference.. Hitting streaks don't work that way..do they, unless the hitter is injured and held out by his manager? And, I don't remember if they cease then, or not. So, you tell me..and no, I am not a NY YANKS fan.. I am into reality, though, and data proven facts that meet actual definitions.. Oh yes...

Ummmmm, it's not about "scheduled" games my friend. It's about team games played, that he didn't miss. Those are the rules. Scream all you want, but it doesn't change how the rulebook is written.

If its not about the next scheduled game that he willingly does not play in, what is "CONSECUTIVE" in its purest sense about? Is it about: "I am injured, cannot play today, or injured so badly I have to go on the disabled list? Is it about, as in game 2633:"I don't feel up to playing today?" Is it:"I am retiring and will not play today?" Is it about: "I am going along with my union and I am striking, and will not play today?"= causing of his and other's own volition, otherwise the owner's don't lockout, and the game is not cancelled, him not playing in the next scheduled game, for the 2130th or 2031st consecutive time without missing season time, as in the 2130 that Gehrig put together? Even in the one-game pause in '85, the Orioles made up that game, so he played in it. None of the last 50 or so games of 1994, nor first 18 games of 1995 were made up. So, he did not fulfill every game in the schedule, and even if they were made up OF HIS OWN VOLITION, not like in a weather postponement, but in a labor strike, he did not play in that game. And, he still did not match Gehrig's very much data confirmed by game log, feat= played in every regular season's game that was scheduled consecutively for 2130 games. Nope.. Well? Try again... That is the point you failed to refute. Try again...

You're being pedantic. It was a labor dispute. You can't hold that against him. He had to side with the players. If they owners locked the players out, would you put that against him, too? If you wanna argue that Gehrig was more of an Iron Man, I mean, okay... He can win your paper Iron Man title if that makes you happy. If I wanted to argue I'd say Cal was a power hitting shortstop that played everyday, which means getting spiked, turning double plays, and all other treacherous infield responsibilities meanwhile trying to drive in runs. I personally rank Gehrig higher All time than Cal. Gehrig was the leader of a dynasty and a hero. If you don't understand labor disputes vs retirement, that's on you.

I'm not a braves fan but after 162 game regular season. The team with best record is best, PERIOD. WS is really just an exhibition. Your ave for 162 games, then get hot for 7 and you're world champions? Sounds like 3rd grade logic. They have postseason for money and excitement, in case 1 team was waaay ahead in early august. That whole month would be meaningless. Thats why
