if there's one unwritten rule that makes no sense, it's the one about not trying to hit when winning by a lot or against a position player pitching. These guys are paid millions of dollars to play, they have stats that are affected by these games, and people get mad when they try? If the opposing team really can't handle getting beaten by 20 runs, we either need to implement a mercy/surrender rule, or the opposing team needs to check their egos and stop crying when they get shelled. just my two cents

These are ridiculous. I used to coach youth baseball. I told my players, if there are outs on the scoreboard, we are still playing. Down 10 or up 10, we still swing the bats. We still play defense. Pitchers still have to throw strikes. Why did I coach them this way? Because my job as coach isn't just about baseball. Life isn't fair. Life isn't easy. Other teams aren't going to yield because we are losing bad. Don't expect a team to do that. And in life, it's the same thing. The lessons we learn on the ball field extend far beyond the grass and dirt diamond.

@@hobinrood710 the initial claim is that the rules need to be written down. My counter was they can’t be written down. That did not prove their point of the rules need to be written. If they were being facetious, then the post is lacking emoticons or the a like. Why have them at all you say? Technically they aren’t there (not in the rules), just player agreements with no foundations. This is similar to agreements without documentations in business. For example, I deal with trading and with a group of other advisors, we don’t charge each other trading fees (or sometimes split), but with others like large banks, we will have them cough up the fees. Rules state fees are always assessed, but we agree to pay each other the same fee to make it null. Just like baseball’s unwritten rules: agreements with no foundation that isn’t a part of the rules.

I understand that when you play sport you don't do things to antagonise the other team, but this 'don't bunt on a perfect game' or 'don't try and blowout an already big score' should not be part of that. As a college player, i can understand that people dont want to get run up on. But at the same time, what lead is safe? I just watched my Padres come back on the Cubs down 8 runs. Unless the unwritten rules say you also cant come back and win, they are pointless. Dont get mad, get better. If tonight wasnt your night, tip your hat and move on to the next one.

The absolute worst unwritten rule in baseball is don't bunt to break up a perfect game/no hitter. Why should the batter, an opponent, have the slightest worry in the world about the pitcher's achievement? Especially in a close game. I was watching a game years ago and a pitcher had a no hitter going into the eighth of a 1-0 game, and the lead off batter bunted a base hit and everyone lost their mind about it. The batter is trying to win the damn game. How does the pitcher's potential no hitter take priority over trying to win the game for your team? For no reason other than "that's not how you're supposed to play baseball". Just so stupid.

The first one isn't an unwritten rule. If you have position players pitching, chances are there will be hard contact. It would be worse if they were just standing there taking walks off of him.

When I played in the 90’s I wasn’t aloud to smile if I hit a home run. My own team would give me a hard time. Right now looks like the best time ever to play baseball. I don’t like Acuna & Tatis’s style but they have set the stage for players to relax and have fun a little bit more which is important in a sport that makes a superstar out of you when you fail 7 out 10 times. It’s such a frustrating sport so when you do something good you want to scream fuck ya. Not at the other team but your self.

The problem is that the unwritten rules are in effect going against the actual rules. Like officially there is no way to forfeit a game. But effectively that is what the unwritten rule seeks do. Like from a strictly competitive standpoint why should a team allow their opponents to "save their fresh pitchers"? So they can lose to them the next day? If you want to go home, put someone good in and get the outs. If they don't like that there isn't a forfeit or mercy rule. They should be lobbying MLB to add one rather than hitting guys for playing the game out as intended. Seems like misplaced frustration.

The one where escobar stole third in the 7th with a 5 run lead, the reaction from boston was ridiculous. 5 runs is not a big lead that can't be overcome. you can get 3, 4 or even 5 runs in a single rally inning. The first one where he swung with a 3-0 count, if you're going to make a mockery of the game by throwing 40 mph with a position player, then they have the right to make a mockery out of your pitch by hitting it 400+.

I’m a big baseball fan, but this is one area where the sport seriously suffers and makes it seem archaic. Don’t swing on a lead? Don’t try to get on base? Don’t try to hit a home run, even though it’s only the sixth inning and your team is up by 7? Isn’t that what these guys get paid millions of dollars to do? Who came up with these stupid “unwritten rules”, anyway? Absolutely ridiculous and asinine. My favorite, too, is when the pitchers get insanely butt hurt and INTENTIONALLY drill the batter. Because, after all, trying to purposely injure an opposing player since your feelings were hurt is completely justified 🙄

Never understand why MLB doesn't implement the same rule the NBA does when it comes to fights. You leave the bench and step on the court you are ejected. Should be the same for baseball. You leave the dugout or your position to get into a fight, you are ejected. Stupid brawls that no one wants to see that just screw up the game.

Why is it that baseball's unwritten rules can't be broken but the written rules, specifically the strike zone is not enforced?
@raantaas96
@raantaas96 10 ай бұрын
That rectangle we see on screen is just a suggestion box. Why are home plate umpires behind the catcher and batter??? Home Umpires would have a much better angle to see how high or low pitches were if they positioned themselves more to each side of the batters boxes. For example, when a right batter is at bat, the umpire could slide over the opposite batters box to see the pitches and go to right side box when a left batter is batting.
@kelvinmathews7198

@@raantaas96 I'm speaking specifically about the strike zone as it appears in the baseball book of rules. The vertical strike zone is between the armpit and knees. They call anything above the belt a ball. Bs.
@raantaas96
@raantaas96 10 ай бұрын
@@kelvinmathews7198 In theory that would work, as almost any theory in reality do. But, as we all know, not all players are exact same heights or girth. That is why the home umpire standing behind the catcher makes ABSOLUT non sense. Right hand batter??? Position Home Umpire to the left hand batters box. Left hand batter??? POSITION Home Umpire to the RIGHT hand batters box. If those Home Umpires are cowards of balls hitting them, bring back those couch cushion guards that cover their whole body outside the head.
