if its done subtly it can work but most catchers are terrible at it they catch a ball a foot outside the strike zone then jerk their hand into the strike zone and no ump is that stupid to fall for it.

This happens waaaaay too often in baseball. What’s annoying isn’t just the missed pitches you’re seeing here, it’s the fact that usually these frustrations are the culmination of many missed strikes over the course of a game. As a hitter, you can adjust to an umpire who has a wide strike zone if they’re at least consistent with it. It’s when they’re inconsistent that it becomes impossible for a hitter to anticipate what will be a ball or strike.

That very first clip was from a game where the infamous Angel Hernandez was plate umpire. He is notorious as the worst umpire in baseball, and this was his worst game. He'd been blowing ball-and-strike calls all game, all game, all game, and Kyle Schwarber finally let him have it. Check the score: Philadelphia losing 1-0, bottom of the ninth. The Phillies had numerous scoring opportunities ruined because batters didn't swing at pitches far outside the strike zone and Hernandez called them strikes. This put them behind in the count, and forced them to swing at balls because they had no idea what Hernandez would call a strike. Or they struck out on on bad calls. Hernandez even sued the MLB because he's never gotten a spot in the playoffs despite decades in the majors, and he accused the league office and umpires' union of racial discrimination because he's Hispanic. Incompetent and self-pitying.

Daz and Aidan, that first clip where Kyle Schwarber the Phillies batter got thrown out was due to and entire game of poor calls that where blatant and some not even questionable that were flat missed. Not to mention the home plate ump for this game Angel Hernandez is generally regarded as one of of not the worst ump in baseball but is protected by of the umpires union. Jomboy media has video breaking this down between him and Kyle Schwarber because of how egregiously bad it was on Hernandez’s part. But he was in the spot light for another missed call in a game with the Tampa rays but due to instant replay the call was reversed and show to be a complete blunder on his part saved by the instant review. Again later on in the when it shows another Phillies player talking tk the ump about that pitch that was called a strike that was way off and the replay of where it was in regards to the strike zone and showed it was out of the zone was the same game as the very first clip is this that game got scrutinized heavily afterwards and that umps reports got put out and he had terrible marks for accuracy for that game.

@gregcable3250

A strike is when the ball passes through the "strike zone" which in MLB is formally, "The official strike zone is the AREA over home plate from the midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap." So that frame you see is not the strike zone but only frames the front of the strike zone, which is an AREA over the plate taking roughly the shape of a cube (not a square). As such some of these non-strikes may have actually been strikes--some obviously were not.

Most umpires miss a few calls every game but there are definitely some that miss way too many calls to frequently. Now they rate the efficiency of the ball and strikes calls but it's mostly just for record keeping. But they do use rating to decide which umpires work the post-season games. The umpires have such a strong union that no gets fired for poor performance. There are a few long time umpires that everyone knows are terrible all-around you just have to power through them. Since the introduction of Instant Replay reviews of plays in the field many of their bad calls are corrected. They do have a system in the minor leagues for challenging bad calls that looks to work pretty well but it may be awhile before they implement it in the Major Leagues.

I'm sure there are many videos about him for y'all to react to, but Angel Hernandez is known as being one of the worst umpires in terms of calling a ball/strike with any consistency. Players and fans have universally hated him for the ~20 years he's been an ump. The only reason the MLB can't fire him is because the umpires' union is strong enough with a potential backlash that its easier for them to keep him on. For me, the worst thing about his calls is that none of them are consistent so players have no clue what to expect from him. If an ump is having a wider strike zone than what the rule technically is, most players are fine with that so long as they keep it consistent and call it the same way for both teams. Hernandez like 10 years ago tried suing the MLB for discrimination by not letting him umpire the World Series; the leagues defense was pretty easy since all they had to say was you are a bad umpire and that's why you didn't get the job.
@Nexadvenio
@Nexadvenio 9 ай бұрын
I’m sure a lot of this is already but: The way the catchers move their hands when they catch the ball is called framing, it can create an illusion for the ump based on the angle they see the catch. The umps don’t get fired because they have an unreasonably strong union contract. There’s a man named Angel Hernandez that is notorious for blowing calls. It does not need to be directly in or out of the box, the strike zone is technically a floating cube, as long as the ball is the appropriate height, any piece of the ball can go over any piece of the plate. Some umpires also have their own strike zone. For example, the tallest mlb umpire has a tendency to call a higher strike zone, but does that consistently, so teams play around it. The reason Schwarber was so mad in that first clip was because the ump (Angel Hernandez) had been inconsistent, calling balls and strikes on pitches in essentially the same location.

Part of what makes the sport so interesting is the human element aspect, especially with the umpires. Some umpires may have longer vertical strikezones, and some may have wider horizontal strike zones. The batters have these statistics about how umpires call their strikes, but of course it's still super annoying as a batter when you know for a fact a pitch wasn't a strike and it gets called as such. You combine that with how the Catchers frame pitches, and some of the angles a Pitcher can throw the ball which give it the illusion that it was thrown in the strike zone, and you can see why hitting a baseball rates as one of the toughest things you can do in sports. This is why perfect umpire games are a thing in Baseball, where the umpire doesn't miss a single call all night. It's a tough job honestly.

Fans have been screaming at umpires for over a hundred years. That is one of the things that made baseball so popular with fans. Making the strike zone automated will destroy the "charm of baseball" and cater to the new generation that wants their entire lives automated and controlled by technology. The job is much harder than it looks; and high school, college, and mlb umpires have to call hundreds of pitches per game. ...I was a little league and high school umpire and I heard the insults from players and fans. But that was the beauty of baseball.

For me personally it’s a part of the game. Yes it’s frustrating when the ump is obviously wrong (like in this video) but at the same time maybe it’s me being traditional, it’s all about strategy. If you know the ump tends to call certain pitches just outside as strikes then you have to adjust your game plan. But I do think that when they make insanely bad calls that they need to be held accountable for it.

@@Sprayber ultimately I think it comes down to other umpires holding the inconsistent ones accountable. The good ones out number the bad ones in the union and I think they could make the union hold the bad ones accountable. It’s a matter of doing the right thing in my opinion. Get the union to make some ground rules, x amount of bad calls in a certain period (if that’s a month or a season or whatever) then you’re given a warning. Make it a 3 strike rule. I’m not sure how the umpire union works but I’d imagine it goes to a vote and once again, the good outnumber the bad. (I may be completely ignorant about how the union works for them FYI)

MLB's response to this lawsuit was to bring in statistics showing just how bad Angel was at umping games and explained that was the reason he wasn't getting assigned to important games. And while the umpire may have technically been wrong on these pitches, he may have been making those same calls through the entire game. Different umpires have different strike zones. It shouldn't be that way, but it is. And it's not like MLB umpires are any different than umpires for soccer. Maybe somebody gets a red card and that changes the whole flow of the game. Daz the dugout nowadays can tell they are not strikes because they have screens and replays in the dugout. Although they can tell without the screens pretty much. Also take into account that umpires have to make a judgement call on a ball travelling at 95+ miles an hour if not 100 miles per hour, believe me it's so easy to make a mistake. Also forget where the catcher gloves the pitch, the question is did the ball cross that square you see on TV. But yes all those pitches were bad calls.

While I hate the egregious calls (like many in the this compilation) I will say two things that I do appreciate about the human element of calling balls and strikes. I appreciate that the strike zone is the strike zone, but each umpire has “their” strike zone. One may give you a little more off the plate than others. One might squeeze the corners, but he’s known to call them lower. It’s a game within the game that the batter and pitcher have to adapt to. And then at the professional level, that’s something they can even scout. Of course awful calls are bad. But the slight variations between ump to ump is kind of fun and interesting. And 2nd, the framing of pitches. It’s an art and skill for catches and I feel that everyone appreciates a good frame job when they see one.

All anyone asks is that they are consistent. It a pitch was a strike on the first pitch of the game, that same location should be a strike for both teams, all game long. If they do that, even if it’s not a textbook strike, no one will complain.

I honestly don't know how MLB plans on handling this. Technically, the strike sone changes with each batter. As kids, we are taught that the strike zone, in general goes from the letters on the front of one's uniform, to about mid-thigh. The reality is that strike zone is lower than that, but the point is that it is supposed to vary from hitter to hitter.

Also any part of the ball that “paints” the edge of home plate is a strike

ump is behind the catcher, its a good view for over the plate, and high pitches, but thoes sinkers are hard to judge in that split second. thats why alot of thoes clips were low and inside/outside, its catchers job to make up the difference

I swear to God that sometimes umpires will make a bad call simply to spite a batter. In some of these you can see the batter and ump arguing in the preceding pitch and I don't think it's a coincidence that they make a headass call on the next.

Also, the camera angle is not right behind the pitcher, but off to the right, so it can be deceiving for that reason, too.

Many people want Robo umpires but I like having the human element in baseball, in my opinion bad calls are part of the game and it leads to arguments with the managers and excitement etc.

I mentioned a Jomboy video with Angel Hernandez for awful calls. But there is also a Jomboy video where an umpire calls a perfect game. It's a great break down. You should give that a watch as well.

It's probably in the comments but that box isn't official, it is just a creation by the TV networks. If any part of the ball crosses the strike zone it is supposedly a strike. The entire ball does not need to be over the plate.

I want a player at one point to just react like nothing happened and continue with the at-bat like nothing happened on a called strike 3

Some umps hold grudges of they think that a player was trying to show them up and then make bad calls as a payback. Half the umps have been in the majors too long and should get fired but their union is very strong

The MLB umpire union is ridiculously strong. There is no way to fire an umpire. You just have to wait until they retire.

i think a lot of the umpires don't like it when its a 3-2 count and the batter makes a move to first base thinking automatically they walked . so the umpire rings him up for the disrespect. if they just waited a second and put their egos in check , they might walk more.

Angel Hernandez is the worst ump ever but they have a strong union. However he''s never picked for the post season.
