Joe Davis just told the incredible story of how the recording of this game exists. A 17 year-old Dodgers fan living in San Diego had to make the decision of going on a last date with his high school sweetheart before going to college, or staying home and listening to the game on his transistor radio. He had recently purchased a device that could record broadcasts and made the (smart) decision to go on the date that night and record the game. During the second inning, his dad walked by his room and noticed the game wasn't recording, so he luckily turned the device on. The game was thankfully recorded, we get to enjoy this piece of history and Vinny's phenomenal call! As for the teenage fan, he ended up marrying his high school sweetheart - they named their daughter, Sandy.

"I would think that the mound at Dodger Stadium is the loneliest place in the world." "One out away from the promised land!" "..where Sandy threw instead of pitched.." "Two and two to Harvey Kuenn.. one strike away.... here's the pitch.... SWUNG ON AND MISSED, A PERFECT GAME" followed by roughly forty seconds of silence so the audience can hear and feel the crowd. All of that in only one half inning of announcing.. this is why those of us lucky enough to have grown up listening to Vin Scully feel so blessed. Vin was as accurate with his descriptions as Kuofax was with his breaking ball.

@@wilsonking1617 You are correct! The most distinguishing aspect of Cub pitcher Bob Hendley's career was his performance in this game, and in the next head-to-head duel he had with Koufax at Wrigley 5 days later, which he, and the Cubs won, 2-1. Hendley allowed only 2 base runners in 8 complete innings, and only one hit, which didn't come until the 7th, and was inconsequential. The lone run he allowed came in the fifth, and was unearned: walk, sac bunt moved runner to 2nd, runner steals 3rd base, and scores on throwing error by catcher on the steal. This game holds the MLB record for fewest base runners in a perfect game (both teams) with 2.

Ah yes, my childhood hero. I once had a Sandy Koufax autographed baseball. To make a long story long, as a kid we lived in an apartment building on Sweetzer Ave between Santa Monica and Fountain in what is now West Hollywood. Somehow, I don't know how, I found out Sandy lived on the same street. This was before his first no-hitter in 1962. So I buy a new baseball, knock on his door and say "excuse me Mr. Koufax, would you mind signing this baseball?" and he does! Shortly after that he pitched that first no hitter, June 30, 1962, got a bonus from the Dodgers and moved out. Do you know where that baseball is now? Neither do I. I think in a move from one apartment to another my mom threw it out along with my baseball cards and ten cent comic books (25 cents for the jumbo ones). I wonder how much all that stuff would be worth today. She was a 1960s version of Marie Kondo - an extreme minimalist. Bless her soul...

Vin Scully was the poet laureate of baseball announcers. I grew up in Alabama and fell in love with baseball by listening to the guys on TBS doing the Atlanta Braves - Skip Caray, Ernie Johnson, and Pete Van Wieren. I was only exposed to Vin on Saturdays on NBC with Joe Garagiola. But there was a sophistication and gravitas that was always there. And current Braves radio announcer Ben Ingram had a subtle callback to this call I think. During 9th inning of game 6 of the 2021 World Series, Ben dropped several time checks into his call. Even well over 50 years after Sandy's perfect game, Vin's call is still leaving an impact.

I still have the 45 lp record my dad gave me when he worked the game. Pops told me a story that when he was the parking attendant where the players enter, koufax pulls up in his car but forgot his ID. So my dad tells him go right in, mr koufax. And koufax tells my dad, no, you might get into trouble. So my dad (thinking inside is this guy nuts) replied, mr koufax, if they find out I didnt let you in I will get fired! And koufax replied, no, i forgot my ID and I must follow the rules. So koufax drove his car back out and parked by the 76 station.

The game was a double-no-hitter until the seventh inning. Losing pitcher Jim Hendley only gave up that one hit, and it didn't factor into the run that the Dodgers scored. Koufax retired pinch-hitter Harvey Kuenn for the final out; oddly enough, Kuenn was also the final batter retired during Koufax's no-hitter against the Giants in 1963.

Vin was my favorite since I was ten years old in Brooklyn. He was amazing and was the Dodgers voice. We loved that he was a lip reader and would tell what was being said during screaming matches between umpire vs manager. “Fertilizer!” Instead of “B_____it!”. When the Dodgers retreated to the left coast, the only times I saw Vin afterward was when he did World Series games and I enjoyed his work. Especially when my newer favorites, the Mets, played in 1986 series. He was a gem.
