I was at this game, one of the most memorable I've been to. You go to a baseball game to be entertained, and I tell you what: 3 ejections, a fan kicked out by an umpire, and a milestone nobody had ever achieved before? That was something else.

there was a runner on third, and the umpires prevented the run from scoring. do you think that the Cardinals would have turned a triple play? the call was that the run didn't score and this is the only instance when that run doesn't score and indeed they were just looking for a call to make.
@YM-mw4qk7 жыл бұрын
Damon watt its the rule you cant slide with no opportunity to reach the base and if you do its interference wich means the runnes have to go back where they were staying because its time of pitch

+Brammy007a - Right, but why do you suppose they were protesting the call? They can see the replay, can't they?
@Brammy007a8 жыл бұрын
I don't think they could see any replay.... not until much later. Its funny how these coaches and players see what they want to see. Earlier this season (last games yesterday) I had a very bang-bang call at first - might have been a tie, who knows... .... nothing too unusual there..... and I called him safe (2-man system so I was calling it from over nearer to second base. The coach comes out to argue and I say "ok, what have you got".... he says "he was out by a good step and a half". I just said "oh, come on, it was bang bang either way you look at it, gimme a break" and just walked away. A couple of weeks later, I have that team again and a similar close call happens and he comes and SAYS EXACTLY THE SAME THING! That's when I knew that it was just a ploy on his part.... an effort to get into the umps head so that the next super close call might go his way. Sometimes these coaches will just argue to make themselves look strong or to try to fire up their team.

Coming from a Brewer fan (who coincidentally was also at this game, one of the most memorable of my life), I can see where most, if not all of these ejections have some merit. The first ejection (Macha) was pretty straightforward: if you're going in for a takeout slide, you need to at least make an attempt to touch the base. Counsell did no such thing, that was the right call. Macha deserved an explanation but he stayed out there arguing too long. The second ejection (Duncan) I mean come on Duncan, really? You've been coaching in baseball for 30+ years and you're going to yell over a call like that? Granted that was a shitty call, and Davidson had made a few shitty calls that night. But the thing about it was his strikezone was consistent. He didn't call something a ball and call it a strike 2 pitches later, they were all even calls. But Duncan did his yelling and he got tossed for it. The third ejection (Dickerson) that call was a lot closer than I think Dickerson thought. Don't pout about a call like that, it was borderline at the worst. Grow up, Chris. The fourth ejection (fan) that fan was pretty inebriated and had been making some pretty asshole remarks to both Davidson and Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina. The final straw was the fan yelling to Molina, "How do you like making a living on your knees, faggot?" While you could be more thick skinned about a comment like that, at the same time that was a pretty dick thing to say.

+Hunter Mirr Ejecting a fan like that after previously ejecting 3 players/team staff previously seems like he lost his grip on reality and was going all Adolf Hitler on everyone. You just don't eject fans for heckling, heckling is what fans do at baseball games. Fans are the reason that these players and team staff make hundreds of thousands of Dollars per year (and why Umpires even have a job at all). More evident was the way he summoned a Miller Park employee to eject that fans 4 sections away and then made a hurry up gesture at the $10/hr employee. Sorry this umpire was out of line, and his fellow umpires should have relieved him of his duties that night. You don't eject fans unless they are interfering with the game. If fans are overly obnoxious or fighting, it is the job of the ushers and security/police to eject those fans not the damn umpire.
@aisthpaoitht8 жыл бұрын
+residentzombie Yeah, the fan is what is nuts. Although the Hitler reference is not appropriate.

The interference on Counsell was a good call. He was clearly taking aim at the SS with his slide and made no attempt at all to tag second base. Don't know what these announcers are complaining about.

Well if I'm the fan I just stay in my seat and laugh at the ump.
@gop4usa128 жыл бұрын
+Jon Hohensee If you think you can sit and laugh at the umpire, you'll probably find yourself getting arrested. It's one thing for the umpire to say the fan's got to go. But when an usher shows up to escort you out, you really do have to go. There are certain rules fans must obey in order to not get kicked out. In most cases, security catches the fan in the act and shows him the door. But in this case, it was the umpire that caught the rule breaker. I'm guessing the fan threatened the umpire. And if that was the case, it cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.
@jonhohensee32588 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but you're just guessing.
@jonhohensee32588 жыл бұрын
If it was just heckling, i can't imagine that the ump or ref wouldn't be immune to it.
@gop4usa128 жыл бұрын
+Jon Hohensee I'm just saying that with all the booing and shouting from the stands, in order for that one guy to get singled out by the umpire, he had to have crossed a certain line. Umpires can't eject fans for being fans, but they can eject them for violating ground rules. Every ballpark posts signs letting you know what not to do. Those rules are in place for safety and maintaining the integrity of the game.
@Detroit_Dawg7 жыл бұрын
So Umpires can toss out anybody they want for any reason??? Why are they given so much power?
@alanhess93064 жыл бұрын
They are given that power because they are responsible for managing the game.
@Curthe9310 жыл бұрын
The ump made all good calls. This isn't football, this is baseball. If you argue easy calls or argue balls and strikes, you get tossed. If you heckle the ump, you get tossed. That's how it has been for the past hundred years.
@CycloneGU11 жыл бұрын
I've seen close to this. An OHL hockey team, the Sarnia Sting, have a fan group called Pollen Nation that resides behind the opposing bench. On opening night in 2012, Peterborough decided they couldn't tolerate the heckling and refused to come onto the ice for the third period until a certain one of them was made to leave the area. That individual eventually joined the main fan group on the other side of the building and made fun of the situation from there.

The same umpire also removed a fan in Philly a few years later, saying after the game: "This guys starts yelling 'You suck!' You could tell he was (drunk). And so, all right, suck is not bad. Then he kept it up for two hitters completely. Then the third hitter after the first pitch, he says 'I own property on 69th Street. You could come over and suck!' That's when I turned around and said 'You know what, get rid of this guy.' You could have your wife, girlfriend, kids - they buy tickets. They don't have to come here and listen to that. That's exactly what he said to throw him out. ... I didn't know why security just doesn't do that on their own."

The ump should not have the right to throw unruly fans out of the stadium unless they're causing a ruckus on the field. There's always a lot of trash talking in the stands no matter what sporting event you're watching; there's no denying that. The ballpark security guards and guest relations should have the authority to throw the fans out of the stands and the umps can do it if the spectator is causing a ruckus on the field.
@sportsygirl810 жыл бұрын
That was the second time I've seen an umpire throw a fan out. I saw it once at a minor league game where the fan was yelling and booing at the call along with yelling at the 3rd base coach then the umpire started yelling at the fan which escalated things and then the ump threw him out.
@666Brago10 жыл бұрын
sportsygirl8 That's just wrong. The ballpark security/guest relations should be in charge of spectator ejections; not the umpires who are there on assignment. The umps are there simply to officiate the ballgame.
@sportsygirl810 жыл бұрын
I know, I don't get why they have the right to throw a fan out when it's guest relations and security's job to throw a fan out. I guess some umpires feel that they are above the guest relations.
@Swordsfor200Alex10 жыл бұрын
Fucking morons....the officials have total control of the game and stands while the game is being played. I am an NCAA official for another sport (a much bigger sport) and we have thrown fans out several times. Why don't you work for the MLB, NFL or NCAA before you start spouting off comments that you know nothing about. All I have to do is call the police or stadium supervisor over and tell them we want that person or persons removed and they will escort them out. We ejected the entire college band one time for not following the Rules stated in the NCAA rulebook. We eject drunk fans all the time. The NBA ejects fans all the time. They don't show it on TV most of the time because they don't want it to be part of the fan experience.
@Swordsfor200Alex9 жыл бұрын
riddleman65 - Our jurisdiction begins 1 hour before kickoff and ends when the game is over. Everything that happens on the field or effects the contest and it's participates is subject to our rules and control. That doesn't mean stadium security or the police can't arrest people or remove people if they choose. Give it a try sometime. But a $200 ticket and come on down to the lower level and scream at one of us - it has to be a profanity laced threatening comment and see how long it takes for you to end up in parking lot or jail?

Ryan Cooper did you not see the approximate location of the fan in regards to the plate? He was almost in the umpire's ear. Whatever this guy was saying (clearly, this guy was drunk off his ass) was apparently horrible enough that he deemed it a distraction from the game and inappropriate for the fans around him. I've seen another clip where an umpire threw a Phillies fan out fifteen rows back for drunkenly yelling foul language. As the guy was escorted out, Phillies and visiting fans alike cheered because the guy was a tool. You have to understand that while the umpires have the job of protecting the integrity of the game (albeit, they don't always do a great job of it), they also have the job of protecting the fans and stopping them from becoming a distraction.

As a former pro-umpire. I'll go over each ejection. Macha's I just did. 2. Duncan from STL dugout. We call that "sniper fire" when it comes from the dugout like that. You let it go for awhile but after a certain point in order to maintain order you have to dump the guy eventually. If you don't know who it is you just pick someone to show you're not messing around. Can be the closest player to you not in the game. Or it can be the on deck batter if you really want to send a message...

The first call was right. The pitch wasn't in the zone. Throwing your equipment around the plat is supposed to be automatic. The fan was drunk as fuck, and the people around him were quite happy to see him go.

Replays show that umpire was right on every call. Nice to see these prima donna’s getting tossed. And nice to see the fan get the boot too

First call is correct. Second call could go either way, but it's a ball as fox trax exhibits. Third call is also right. First ejection is fair. Second ejection we don't know what Duncan did, so who knows. Third ejection is right because you aren't allowed to throw your helmet like that, players get ejected for that all of the time. Fourth ejection though, don't be a pussy ump, he's just a fan.

+Super Mega Foxy Awesome Hot the FOX trax is bullshit. You're right on everything except the fan. The fan was yelling racial slurs. You cant let people yell stuff like that. Fan should stfu. paying a lot of money doesnt entitle you to be abusive towards people and he was being verballs abusive and threatening.

I like how you seem to have some sort of telepathic connection with umpires, being able to tell us what they think.

Nope. An ump threatened to clear the White Sox bench for Jewish slurs thrown at Hank Greenberg. Actor Michael Moriarty's grandfather was the ump.

Every single one of these ejections was warranted. Except maybe the fan, as it's tough to tell what happened on that one. Maybe he deserved it, maybe not. But all the on field ejections were the right calls.

umpires were right in every instance, boys...read the rule-book and you'll agree too. Well, I don't know about the fan decision...

Ejection of the fans - You know some fans have this idea that paying for a ticket means they can say and do anything they want and that gives them that right but thats not true. If a fan is threatening an umpire or if the umpire feels like his safety is in some jeapordy there he can absolutely have a fan removed. Take this as you will but I've umpired pro ball before. Just a perspective you guys might find useful.

+Hunter Mirr first off thank you for responding in a polite way. Thank you also for explaining that to me but I have to tell you I already knew all of that. In MLB umpires have to fill out a report any time there's an incident (usually for ejections). And in this case every detail you mentioned was also in the ejection report written by the umpiring crew and in this case signed off on By Davidson who is the crew chief. While I hear what you're saying he was also making threatening remarks to the umpire as well but the reason he made the ejection after coming from the Cards dugout is because the team had made several complaints about this man and now felt like they had to tell the umpire before something like (Oakland v. Texas) some years back happened where players start going at it with fans. And rather than allow that to escalate any further Davidson and the entire crew made the decision to have that guy removed from the park. Have a goodnight and thanks for the response.

How the hell can a fan be ejected by an umpire? Fans pay good money to watch the games, umpires have no authority and can't throw out fans! If i was that fan, i would ask for a refund on the ticket.

You gotta be careful with your attitude, or else the home plate umpire will eject you from the internet.

Unless the spectator threw something on the field, you are correct. However, it appears he made the request to the home field organization. Ejecting the man was at their discretion which is covered under the disclaimer on the ticket.
